Elegant. Efficient. Innovative.
Glass Tiger T11 The Glass Tiger T11 is an 11m luxury offshore cruising power catamaran designed by Ron Given and built in Henderson Western Australia by Seafest Marine. It is the latest in a long line of Tiger Designs by Ron Given that started in 1960 with the Paper Tiger. The Glass Tiger represents the elegance, functionality and inventiveness of one of mankind s most enduring creations glass. The use of modern fibreglass technology however, dispels any perception of fragility and replaces it with durability and strength. It is a stylish and highly efficient design that matches durability and functionality with luxury and spaciousness without the price tag usually associated with large and well appointed offshore cruisers. Built in sedan or flybridge versions this vessel can accommodate a wide range of private or charter applications. The design holds a world record for outboard powered offshore cruising with deliveries by sea from New Zealand to Noumea in an incredible 52 hours for a 900 nautical mile voyage. The T11 is a proven offshore cruiser that is still capable of getting up those shallow waterways and parking up in standard marina facilities.
Design Ron Given has been designing world class sail and power catamarans since 1960. In 1966, Ron launched his first Paper Tiger sail catamaran that has gone on to world class fame with over 6,000 boats constructed. In 1987, Ron designed his first power catamaran and in 1991, he released his first outboard powered cruising power catamaran. In 2000 he presented his world class T11 with twin four stroke 225hp outboards built of composite fibreglass and marine ply using the West Epoxy System. In 2008 the T11 has been re-engineered for fully moulded production using controlled vacuum infusion technology, vinyl ester resins and carbon fibre reinforcing. Along the way, outboard powered plants have evolved and now offer up to 350hp adding even more torque and efficiency to the design. Throughout Ron s sailing and designing career he has maintained an enviable record of both safety and efficiency. To quote Ron: The level of safety inherent to specific catamaran design is directly related to the architect, and those with personal extensive coastal and offshore experience are obviously going to draw a safer boat. The combination of highly efficient outboard power with super light and strong vacuum infusion construction technology has married efficiency to safety and has delivered an unparalleled level of accommodation and ride comfort with the legendary ocean going safety that only a catamaran can boast. Manufacture THE GLASS TIGER RON GIVEN Just as Ron s designs have evolved over the decades, so has the manufacturing technology and materials used. The Glass Tiger is a fully moulded vinyl ester resin composite construction using combinations of multiple stitched fabrics with carbon fibre reinforcement and core cell linear polyurethane foam coring. These materials are then laid up dry and vacuum resin infused. The vacuum infusion process eliminates the inconsistencies of hand lay-up that is dependent on the laminator s skill. It completely does away with air entrapment and void problems that can compromise durability. The process creates the highest resin-to-glass ratio in marine construction of a 1/3 resin to 2/3 glass fibre ratio rather than the 2/3 resin to 1/3 glass fibre used in other builders processes. Higher glass fibre content results in greater strength-to-weight ratio and a lighter, yet stronger composite laminate. While this process is more expensive than the traditional chop spray or west system timber and glass composites, it produces a far stronger, lighter and more durable vessel. MARK PRICE Mark Price has grown up around performance yachts and power boats including participation as both yacht builder and crew on the See more about Mark Price and Seafest Marine at www.seafest.com.au New Zealand America s Cup challenge in Fremantle. Mark established Seafest Marine in 1988 and since then has developed an excellent reputation for reliable and innovative boat building. Mark brings extensive experience to the Given Power Catamaran team with mono and multi hull power and yacht construction together with industrial marine and engineering exposure. Mark s manufacturing and yachting credentials together with Ron Given s internationally acclaimed design skills have enabled the Given 11 Power Cat to be redesigned to utilise leading edge technology for its infusion moulded construction methodology.
Efficiency The Planing Tiger Almost without exception, large ocean going power catamarans are FUEL CONSUMPTION displacement or semi-displacement hull designs. Consequently, they lack in high speed capacity. Those designs seeking high speed find they need very large power plants and associated build weight, which compromises their efficiency. By using a light and efficient outboard power plant and super light construction techniques, the Glass Tiger can achieve enviable speed without compromising fuel efficiency. With a cruising speed of 20 knots, the flybridge version Glass Tiger runs at a highly efficient combined 2.5 litres per nautical mile (NM). At its optimum speed of 17 knots, it consumes 66 LPH and 2.02 litres per NM. The sedan is significantly more efficient. Style and Comfort The uniquely stylish Ron Given designed T11 buries the traditional images of bulky and robust power catamarans and departs from the other extreme of converted sailing catamaran designs. The Glass Tiger is sleek and well proportioned with a side profile easily mistaken for a modern monohull. The Glass Tiger has been finished carefully to balance quality and durability with functionality and price. This vessel suits those who seek durable luxury whilst expecting to enjoy a wide range of practical leisure applications.
