For thirty plus years, the Iowa Cattlemen s Association has provided third party verified performance bulls through our Symbol of Excellence Performance Bull and Heifer Sales. Annually, we invite seedstock producers from across the state and beyond to test their genetic bull power against others. And in the end, bulls that make the three sales at Bloomfield, Dunlap and Knoxville better express their prepotent potential to sire more pounds of calf and more. This group of 39 Bloomfield sale bulls started as a group of 57. Yes, that s right, when you purchase a bull from this year s sale, you can take comfort in the fact that we ve already started the selection sort before you get to the auction. In addition to being registered with a breed association, ICA Symbol of Excellence bulls must pass the muster of the following qualifications during and after the commercial feedyard test phase. Minimum ADG ratio of 90. Minimum 1,100-pound adjusted yearling weight. Minimum 11.5-square inch ultrasound ribeye area measurement. Must pass a breeding soundness exam with a minimum 32-centimeter scrotal circumference measurement. Must rank in the upper 80% for average daily gain amongst their breed contemporary group. We re developing herdsires, not fat steers... While comparative analysis is important, we strive to balance actual performance on-test with the more important economic factors of bull potency and longevity. The sale group of yearling bulls averaged 3.88 pounds of gain per day on test while the fall bulls averaged 3.61 pounds per day on test. More important than the comparisons on gain within the group, these bulls are range and pasture ready for spring/summer service - both reproductively and structurally. Pedigree performance matters Take a look at the performance stacked into the pedigrees for the bulls offered for sale. In the yearling bulls alone, nearly half of the bulls rank in the upper 25% of their breed for WW & YW EPDs with many of these same bulls being similarly ranked within their breed for calving ease and birth weight EPD s. And if you re looking for females We re offering a select group of pedigreed Angus, Simmental and Simmental Angus open females. Similar to the bulls, the heifers were developed on a ration to grow and prepare them for solid reproduction. Additionally, pedigrees are performance oriented and these heifers will be ready to take home and stick into your next set of replacement females. This year s set of performance oriented bulls and heifers will no doubt put production, performance and profit into your operation. We have taken great pride in developing and sorting this set for your needs and we look forward to your success to come as a result of your selection. A big thank you to Amstutz Cattle Company, Terry Chapman and the Vet Medical Center of Williamsburg for their support and work on developing the yearling bulls, fall bulls and open heifers respectively. From an animal health standpoint we are greatly appreciative of the consultation from Audubon Manning Veterinary Clinic and the pharmaceutical support from ICA President s Council member - Zoetis. And of course, we need to thank the consignors that have again offered such high-quality seedstock. Whether it s pedigrees represented, feed and ration, development strategies or maintaining the best overall health of all the cattle historically, we are indebted to our partners. Sincerely, Matt Deppe,CEO Iowa Cattlemen s Association (515) 468-7785 On behalf of Iowa Cattlemen s Association and Ruble Cattle Services we would like to welcome you to the Bloomfield Symbol of Excellence Bull & Heifer Sale. We have a great offering this year of Angus, Charolais & Simmental cattle. The ICA is one of the leading state cattlemen s groups in the country. This sale and organization are of the highest reputation. We are excited to be working with the ICA as sale managers. As Matt mentioned, these bulls have jumped through many hoops and they come from several programs and a large cow base. These bulls have been developed properly and you will be impressed when you come to the sale. If you can t make the sale this year, please contact the sale management or any of sale marketing team for assistance. New this year we are offering online bidding. Please make sure to register prior to the sale. We look forward to helping you find your next herd bull or replacement female. Sincerely, Jeremie Ruble Ruble Cattle Services (406) 581-7940 rublecattleservices@gmail.com 2 Symbol of Excellence

DEFINITIONS OF CATALOG INFORMATION: 1. ADG - Average daily gain during the official test period. 2. ADG Ratio - Compares the bull s gain with other bulls of same breed at the test. 3. WDA - Weight per day of age equals final weight divided by days of age. 4. WDA Ratio - Compares individual WDA with other bulls of same breed group. 5. ADJ. Yr. Wt. - The bulls final weight adjusted to 365 days of age and adjusted for age of dam using the standard test-station BIF formula for the yearling bulls and to 452 days of age for the long yearling bulls. 6. Final Wt. - Final weight taken at the conclusion of the test. 7. Frame Score - Measured hip height adjusted to 365 and converted to frame score. 8. Scro CM - Scrotal circumference in centimeters. Bulls with below minimum testicle size have been screened from the sale based on information from the American Veterinary Society standards. 9. Adj. Pelvic Area - Width x height = pelvic area in square centimeters, adjusted to 365 days of age. 10. Percent Retail Product - the amount of salable meat the carcass will yield assuming a 63% dress of the final weight and 2.5% kidney, pelvic & heart fat. Calculated using the standard BIF formula. 12. Information from Breeders: a. Birth Wt - Actual birth weight as reported by bull owner. b. 205 Wt -Actual weaning weight adjusted to the standard 205 days with an adjustment for age of dam. c. 205 Wt Ratio -- Within herd ratio compared to other bulls in the on-farm contemporary group. d. Registration Papers - Are available for review in the sale office for other EPDs or indexes published by the various breed associations. REGISTRATION PAPERS: All sale bulls have been registered with their respective breed associations. Registration papers will be transferred to the buyer by the sale management. EPD INFORMATION: An expected progeny difference (EPD) is prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform in comparison with other animals, of thesame breed, in the evaluation. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are provided by the national breed associations for each bull. The breed average EPDs are listing in the sale catalog within the breed heading. You may compare each bull with that average to determine his strength in each trait. Accuracy of an EPD is a measure of reliability. It is a function of the amount of information used in the calculation of a specific EPD. Based on this definition, ICA sale bull s accuracies will be moderate to low. Research, however, indicates that EPDs for young non-parent bull are 8-10 times more accurate for making selection decisions than adjusted weights and ratios. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), Weaning Weight EPD (WW), Yearling Weight EPD (YW),expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit those weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Mater-l (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Mater-l Milk EPD (MM), is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Carcass Weight EPD (HCW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (REA), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (BF), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. ANGUS BREED ONLY $Value Indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, mater-l milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Quality Grade ($QG), $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD contributes to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG), $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. SIMMENTAL BREED ONLY Stayability (STAY), expressed as the probability that an animal s daughters will remain in production to at lease six years of age when compared to the daughters of another animal. A measure of sustained fertility that probably reflects traits such as fleshing ability and structural soundness. Yield Grade (YG), is measured in a carcass yield grade units/score at 475 days and low values indicate a lower yeild grade. All-Purpose Index (API), evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd wit the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI), evaluates sires for use on mature cows with all the offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. 26 Symbol of Excellence
