See column on the left for updated information. CERT DIRECTORY Jennifer Hoevet and Toni Amaya are working on CERT Directory. If you have not had your picture taken, please email Jennifer with a current photo in *.jpg format (photo should be of head and shoulders). Send to jhoevet@oaconsulting.com MEMBERSHIP FEES: Annual Dues are $15.00 for CERT members. (March 1, 2008 to March 1, 2009) Those families that have more than one CERT member will pay as follows: 2 members = $22.50; 3 or more add $5/pp Mail dues to: Randy Olson, 5401 Oriole Drive, Scottsbluff, NE 69361 CERT TRAINING AND CONTINUED EDUCATION Trainers are: Randy Kleager; Randy Olsen; Brandon Atchison VIP Coordinator: Randy Olsen As a member of CERT it is mandatory that you pass the ICS 100 course from FEMA and then take and pass National Incident Management System (NIMS) training. If you know someone who would like to take the CERT class, notify Bob Hessler. 2

March 27 & 28 th CERT classes were held at the Harms Center in conjunction with Western Nebraska Community College. Staff and students participated. Congratulations to all who took the class and a HUGE thank you to all the volunteer victims. 3

UPCOMING EVENTS April 8, 2009: Weather Spotting Training Class will be held at the Gering Civic Center at 7:00PM. This is a required training, since we can be out in a storm you need to know what is going on with the weather. May 1 st and 2 nd, 2009: Scotts Bluff County CERT team has been chosen to hold the first annual CERT rodeo for CERT teams in the region and the state. 4

KITCHEN FIRE READ THIS FIRST, THEN WATCH THE ATTACHED VIDEO. http://www.videosift.com/video/kitchen-oil-fire-gone-terribly-wrong I never realized that a wet dishcloth can be a one size fits all lid to cover a fire in a pan! This is a dramatic video (30-second, very short) about how to deal with a common kitchen fire... Oil in a frying pan. Read the following Introduction, then watch the show... It's a real eye-opener! At the Fire Fighting Training school they would demonstrate this with a deep fat fryer set on the fire field.. An instructor would don a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of a 10 foot pole and toss water onto the grease fire. The results got the attention of the students.. The water, being heavier than oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. On the open field, it became a thirty foot high fireball that resembled a nuclear blast. Inside the confines of a kitchen, the fire ball hits the ceiling and fills the entire room. Also, do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup of either creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite.. This is a powerful message. Watch the video and don't forget what you see.. Tell your whole family about this video. 5
