CAL GOLF S STATE-OF-THE-ART SHORT-GAME FACILITY In a huge boost for the California men s and women s golf programs, the Golden Bears opened their short-game facility at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland in the fall of 2007. The Cal athletic department would like to thank everyone who combined to contribute approximately $600,000 to bring the project to fruition. The lead donors were Ed and Mollie Arnold, Ellen and Joffa Dale, Jay debenedetti, Lon and Becci Haskew, Judy Isaac, and Pat and Kent Newmark. The programs broke ground on the privately-funded project in 2006 after a long planning process. The two-and-a-half acre state-of-the-art short-game facility is conveniently located on the southwest corner of the Metropolitan Golf Links near the Oakland International Airport, approximately 15 minutes from campus. Built to United States Golf Association specifications, the facility features two extremely large greens one for putting and chipping, and the other for the aerial game, including pitching and bunker play. This was a dream of mine and Cal men s golf for 27 years and for the women s program since its inception in 1994-95. The facility helps improve our players from 120 yards and in. Both teams can always be more efficient in that area. It also helps in terms of recruiting because it makes us more competitive with the best programs in the country. For the first time, we have also been able to reach out to the community and host golf camps and clinics. Men s Head Coach Steve Desimone

Coaching staff STEVE DESIMONE Head Coach 36th Season Cal, 1970 Head coach Steve Desimone is in his 36th season at the helm of the Cal men s golf team in 2014-15 and has led the Golden Bears program to sustained success for nearly four decades including its lone national title in 2004. Cal reached the pinnacle of college golf with its national title that season but the five-year run Desimone s team put together from the beginning of the 2009-10 campaign through the end of the 2013-14 season is considered the golden era of the program and one of the best in the history of college golf. The combined accomplishments of the last three teams of the era were unprecedented not only at Cal but on a national level as the Bears won 24 of 40 stroke-play events and were in the top five on 38 occasions as well as each of their four matchplay tournaments during the period. The final three seasons of the era also included two appearances in the national semifinals (2012, 2013), a single-season NCAA record 12 stroke-play victories in 2012-13 when the Bears were widely thought to have registered the best season in the history of college golf, and both the first two NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history (2012, 2013). The Bears were the nation s top-ranked team at the end of the 2012-13 campaign despite a second straight defeat in the NCAA Championship semifinals. Five Cal players from the era Brandon Hagy, Max Homa, Michael Kim, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver were first-team All-Americans at least once in their careers with all five being recognized as either first or second-teamers in 2012-13 to make Cal the first team in the history of college golf to have five first or second-team All-Americans in the same season. There were plenty of other firsts during the era including Kim s selection as both the unanimous National and Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2012-13 as well as Homa s NCAA individual title the same campaign. Hagy, Homa and Weaver also became the first three players in the history of the program to each play in the NCAA Championship four times. The golden era arguably came to an end following the 2013-14 campaign when four of the team s five players at the NCAA Championship were seniors but not before the Bears extended their school-record string of appearances at the national finals to each of the last five seasons, which is something only six teams in the country can claim. Although the golden era may be over, a young 2014-15 team that includes four freshmen and no seniors on its roster is looking to start a new era and got off to a good start in the fall of 2014 by winning a pair of events at the Windon Memorial and Alister MacKenzie Invitational while finishing the fall ranked as high as No. 21 nationally. Three of the seven players to see the course were freshmen in Sebastian Crampton, Ben Doyle and KK Limbhasut. Juniors Shotaro Ban and Keelan Kilpatrick also played as did sophomores Walker Huddy and Cameron Shaw. Crampton led the way in the fall of 2014 with three top-10 finishes and a 70.00 stroke average. Shaw was second with a 70.73 stroke average and had the team s lone win when he shared medalist honors at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate. Limbhasut had three top-15 finishes, while Kilpatrick and Huddy both had the highest individual finishes of their careers with a tied for thirdplace showing at the Gopher Invitational for Kilpatrick and a pair of tied for 12th-place finishes for Huddy at the Gopher Invitational and Windon Memorial. Cal tied for the second most wins in school history with six in its final season of the golden era in 2013-14, with each coming over its first nine events. The Bears won three of five tournaments during the fall (Saint Mary s Invitational, Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Alister MacKenzie Invitational) and moved up to as high as tied for No. 2 nationally according to Golf World/Nike Golf after winning three of its first four events in the spring (Arizona Intercollegiate, John A. Burns Intercollegiate, National Invitational Tournament). The Bears would not win another CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS event in 2013-14 but did head into the NCAA Championship as the No. 5 seed before finishing tied for 11th. Hagy raked in the honors in 2013-14 with the long list including All-Nicklaus Team, first-team Golfweek All-American, first-team Division I PING All-American, Byron Nelson Award, first-team Capital One Academic All- America Division I Men s At-Large, firstteam Division I PING All-West Region, Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Pac-12 All-Academic, Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal, first-team All-Pac-12, Co-Team MVP, Cal s Ben Furth Award, Golden Bear Achievement Award, The Ben Hogan Award Semifinalist, and September 2013 Pac-12 Men s Golfer of the Month. Stalter joined Hagy on the All-Nicklaus Team, as well as the first-team Division I PING All- American and All-West Region teams, while adding second-team All-American recognition from Golfweek. He was also a national finalist for the Byron Nelson Award, a first-team All-Pac-12 pick, an honorable mention Pac- 12 All-Academic selection and the team s co- MVP along with Hagy. Hagy (Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Aggie Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate) and Stalter (Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate, National Invitational Tournament) were both three-time individual medalists including a shared title at the Arizona Intercollegiate, which was one shy of the singleseason school record of four set by Kim in 2012-13. Hagy finished the season ranked No. 6 nationally by Golfweek and Golfstat while Stalter was No. 17. Cal s 2012-13 season that was arguably the best in the history of college golf earned Desimone the 2013 Dave Williams Eaton Golf Pride National Coach of the Year honor in Division I men s golf as well as the Golfweek National Coach of the Year. He was also the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season to mark the third time in his career earning the award. The Bears posted the top 54-hole strokeplay score at the 2013 NCAA Championship hosted by Georgia Tech at the Capital City Club s Crabapple Course to earn the top seed for match play at the event for the first time in school history. Cal opened NCAA match play with a quarterfinal victory over Arizona State before a semifinal loss to Illinois ended an incredible season that saw the Bears move into the top spot in late-september and spend the remainder of the season as the nation s top-ranked team in all three sets of rankings (Golfstat, Golfweek, Golf World/Nike Golf) including the final version of each after the NCAA Championship despite their national semifinal loss. Cal set a modern-era NCAA win record in 2012-13 with 12 victories in 14 stroke-play tournaments, eclipsing the previously established record of 10 by the 1985-86 Oklahoma State team. Cal s first five wins came at the Gopher Invitational, PING/Golfweek Preview (shared with Georgia Tech), Pac-12 Preview, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Isleworth Collegiate Invitational to record the first sweep of its fall schedule in school history. In addition to finishing as the top team during stroke play at the NCAA Championship and winning titles at the NCAA Pullman Regional and Pac-12 Championship, the Bears had spring wins during the regular season at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters and Western Intercollegiate. Kim, who would turn professional during his junior season following the team s 2013 fall schedule, swept the Haskins Award, Jack Nicklaus Award and Golfweek/Sagarin Player of the Year in 2012-13 as he became the first Cal golfer to win national player of the year honors. In addition, Kim was one of three national finalists for The Ben Hogan Award presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the best college golfer in the nation for their amateur play the 12 previous months. Kim, along with Homa and Weaver were GCAA/PING Division I first-team All- Americans, with Kim adding Golfweek firstteam All-American honors, while Homa and Weaver were second-team choices. All three were also GCAA/PING Division I All-West Region and first-team All-Pac-12 selections, while Hagy and Stalter were both GCAA/ PING Division I and Golfweek second-team All-Americans, GCAA/PING Division I All-West Region picks and second-team All-Pac-12 choices. In addition, the Bears swept Pac-12 Men s Golfer of the Month honors in 2012-13 to become the first conference team to ever do so, with Kim (October 2012, March 2013) and Homa (September 2012, April 2013) winning twice each, and Stalter picking up the honor once (February 2013). Cal players at least shared individual medalist honors a school-record 10 times in 2012-13 led by the single-season schoolrecord four captured by Kim (Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters). Homa (NCAA Championship, Pac-12 Championship) and Stalter (Arizona Intercollegiate, John A. Burns Intercollegiate) won twice each, with Homa becoming the first Cal player to ever win the NCAA title and the third to win the Pac-12 crown. Weaver (NCAA Pullman Regional) and Hagy (Alister MacKenzie Invitational) were individual medalists once each. The individual NCAA title earned Homa the Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway given annually to the individual medalist at the NCAA Championship. Kim also captured the Golfstat Cup given to a single player for all levels of collegiate golf with the lowest adjusted stroke average in the nation heading into the NCAA Championship. Kim (70.14), Homa (70.56), Stalter (70.68), Hagy (70.80) and Weaver (70.92) all finished with strokeplay averages under 71.00. Kim was the No. 1 player nationally in the final rankings by Golfweek while he finished at No. 4 according to Golfstat. Cal had five players ranked in the final top 20 by Golfweek (No. 1 Kim, No. 11 Weaver, No. 12 Stalter, No. 13 Homa, No. 19 Hagy) and top 25 according to Golfstat (No. 4 Kim, No. 10 Homa, No. 16 Stalter, No. 22 Hagy, No. 23 Weaver). Weaver also became the first current Cal player to compete in the Masters during the 2012-13 season after qualifying for the 2013 event with a runner-up finish at the 2012 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club. In addition, Weaver gained an exemption for the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion with his U.S. Amateur showing and was joined by Kim and Homa, who reached the U.S. Open through the 36-hole sectional qualifying. Kim was the low amateur at the U.S. Open with a tied for 17th place finish after rising as high as third on the leaderboard during the third round, while Weaver also made the cut. The trio became what is believed to be the first three players from the same collegiate team to play in the same U.S. Open. Kim (United States), Stalter (Europe) and Weaver (United States) also played for their respective countries in the 2013 Palmer Cup at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. Homa, Kim and Weaver later led Team USA to a victory in the 2013 Walker Cup at National Golf Links of America. The string of exceptional play started in 2011-12 when Desimone was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career and added GCAA/Eaton West Regional Coach of the Year honors for the first time. His 2011-12 squad reached the national semifinals and posted a series of firsts along the way that included a trip to NCAA Championship match play as well as a match-play victory over San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the event hosted by USC at The Riviera Country Club. Cal also won NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles both for the first time in events hosted by Stanford and Oregon State, and posted a then-school- 4 2014-15 Men's Golf Annual Report

record six tournament wins. Cal finished the season ranked No. 3 by both Golfstat and in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches Poll, while Golfweek put the Bears at No. 6. The squad featured three GCAA/PING Division I All-Americans in Hagy, Homa and Kim. Cal opened the 2011-12 campaign with a victory at the Wolverine Intercollegiate and also shared a win with Oregon at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by the Bears in the fall. The team s Pac-12 and NCAA Regional wins in the two events leading up to the NCAA Championship were preceded by victories at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate and ASU Thunderbird Invitational earlier in the spring. Cal also finished second twice by a single stroke during the spring schedule to host schools Arizona at the Arizona Intercollegiate and UNLV at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. Hagy, Homa and Kim were each named second-team All-Pac-12 and shared team MVP honors, with Kim adding the squad s Newcomer of the Year award. Stalter was honorable mention all-conference and the team s Most Improved Player. Homa (71.19) narrowly edged Hagy (71.41) and Kim (71.41) for the team s lowest stroke average. Homa tied for ninth individually at the NCAA Championship, which at the time was the second-highest finish ever by a Cal player but is now fourth after being surpassed by both his own victory and Hagy tying for eighth in 2013. All three finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Stanford Regional with Hagy third, Kim tied for fourth and Homa tied for 10th, giving Cal three top-10 players at an NCAA Regional for the first time in school history and making Homa the first player ever at Cal to finish in the top 10 in the same season at both the NCAA Championship and NCAA Regional, with Hagy becoming the second in 2013. Hagy (T5th) and Stalter (T9th) also had top- 10 showings at the Pac-12 Championship. Cal tied for 19th at the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek to conclude a strong campaign in 2010-11, reaching as high as No. 13 in the national polls and equaling a then-school record with three regular-season tournament wins (The Prestige at PGA WEST, Alister MacKenzie Invitational, John A. Burns Intercollegiate) among its total of 14 events. All told, Cal had eight top-five finishes in 2010-11, also taking third at the NCAA Arizona Regional, Windon Memorial and Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, placing fifth at the Pac-10 Championship and tying for fifth at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Weaver was named a GCAA/PING Division I All-American after posting an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championship that at the time was the highest ever by a Cal player and is still tied for second. Stephen Hale, Homa and Eric Mina all picked up second-team All-Pac-10 selections, while Ben An (Byeong-Hun An) was an honorable mention choice. Homa was the team s lone individual medalist, sharing the title at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate before falling in a playoff. An had a stretch of top-notch golf to lead the Bears during backto-back team victories when he placed third at The Prestige at PGA WEST before tying for second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Cal had missed the NCAA Championship for five consecutive seasons (2005-09) before returning to its spot among the nation s elite with a 23rd-place finish in 2010. Cal qualified for the NCAA Championship at The Honors Course by tying for third place at the NCAA San Diego Regional. The Bears also posted three regular-season victories to tie a then-school record, winning the Spartan Golf Classic, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Arizona Intercollegiate. Several individuals had tremendous accomplishments during the campaign, highlighted by the Pac-10 individual medalist honors won by Mina at the event hosted by Arizona State. Mina is one of only three Cal golfers to ever capture the event, with Charlie Wi the first in 1995 and Homa the third in 2013. Mina, who earned GCAA/ PING Division I All-American honors, also won at the Spartan Golf Classic while Hale captured the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Weaver became the first Cal player to finish in the top 10 at both the Pac-10 Championship and NCAA Regionals in the same season, tying for sixth and taking eighth, respectively. Prior to its current five-year run, the team s previous appearance at the NCAA Championship came at the end of the magical 2003-04 campaign when Desimone orchestrated one of the greatest stories in the history of college golf as Cal came from eight strokes behind UCLA on the final day of the event at The Homestead in Virginia to win the 2004 national title by six strokes over the Bruins. It was the culmination of a season in which the Bears had to overcome several injuries but were able to play their best golf when it counted the most. As a result of his team s impressive accomplishment, Desimone was named Golfweek s Collegiate Coach of the Year and was honored as 2004 Grand Master of the Year by the Northern California Golf Association. Desimone s journey to a national championship and the elite status the program enjoys today started in the fall of 1979 when he came aboard as head coach at Cal to take over a program which had lost its varsity status following the previous season. But Desimone was intent on not only returning the program to varsity status but taking it to a higher level. Among the first steps was the formation of the Cal Golf Committee in 1980, the primary support group for the men s golf team, which helped return the program to varsity status in 1982. By 1986-87, Cal was ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation for the first time in the history of the program. One outstand- CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS ing performance that season was a dramatic comeback at San Diego State s Frank Scott Memorial Tournament. Trailing fourth-ranked Fresno State by 17 shots going into the final round, the Bears rallied to win their first major championship in 17 years. Cal s success that season helped Desimone win Pac-10 Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors for the first time. During an outstanding 1989-90 campaign, Desimone brought the Bears program to a then-unprecedented level when the team earned its first NCAA postseason berth in 26 seasons by qualifying for an NCAA Regional. Cal competed in the 1964 NCAA Championship, but didn t actually earn its first berth until 1990 at New Mexico State, two years after the NCAA switched to a selection/qualifying format. Cal played in 13 tournaments that year, placing among the top 10 in all but two, including a then-regular-season school-record-tying three team titles and a tie for third place at the Pac- 10 Championship. In addition, the Bears were ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation throughout the season. Ben Furth, the school s first All-American in men s golf and still the only men s golfer in the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame, was a major contributor to the Bears success. The following season came to a disappointing conclusion for Desimone and the Bears. A career-ending back injury to Furth brought to an end the hope that 1990-91 would surpass Cal s great season the preceding year. Off the course, however, another important step in the rebuilding of the program was undertaken. With the generous support of the Cal Golf Committee, a minimal amount of financial aid was offered to incoming student-athletes for the first time in 15 years. This was a critical step because it finally demonstrated the Bears were committed to competing nationally in all respects and gave Desimone a new and critical tool in recruiting. The 1994-95 season was historic as the Bears qualified for their first ever NCAA Championship and posted the best finish in school history at the time and still the fourth-best ever by taking sixth in the event hosted by Ohio State in Columbus. Cal was appearing at the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1964 when there was no selection/ qualifying format. The Bears were previously selected to play in their third NCAA Regional in six years and came up with a sixth-place showing at the event hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque after a second-place finish to Arizona State at the Pac-10 Championship. Wi led the way by earning first-team All-American honors and was Cal s first Pac-10 individual champion, while Garrett Larson picked up honorable mention All-American recognition. Cal returned to the NCAA Championship for three consecutive years from 1998-2000, finishing 15th at New Mexico, 16th at Minnesota and 17th at Auburn, respectively. 2014-15 Men's Golf Annual Report 5

The Bears were tied for fourth at the NCAA Tempe Regional, fourth at the NCAA Tucson Regional and tied for 10th at the NCAA Madera Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championship during those three seasons, after finishing fourth, fifth and third, at the Pac-10 Championship. The 1997-98 team led by All-American Dan Arroyo used the best final round of the day at the NCAA Tempe Regional to reach the NCAA Championship and then was the final team to make the cut at the national event before eventually settling for its 15th-place finish. Arroyo was back again in 1998-99 and led a now-veteran group that also included 2001 U.S. Amateur runner-up and 2002 Masters participant Robert Hamilton to its 16th-place showing. The Bears missed a playoff at the NCAA s to have an opportunity to make the cut by a single shot. The 1999-2000 squad featured All-American Han Lee and current associate head coach Walter Chun. The Bears needed a dramatic finish at the 2000 NCAA Regional at Riverbend Golf Club in Madera when Chun birdied the last hole of the entire tournament to force a three-team playoff for the final spot to advance to the NCAA Championship. The Bears would eventually win the playoff on the third hole, beating Stanford and Idaho. At the NCAA s, Cal would miss making the cut by a single shot but Hamilton would move on in the championship as an individual. All told, Desimone has directed Cal to the NCAA Championship in 10 of the 13 appearances the Bears have made in school history (1995, 98, 99, 2000, 04, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14), including the current schoolrecord stretch of five in a row. The Bears have played in all 19 of their NCAA Regionals (1990, 93, 95, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 01, 02, 03, 04, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14) under Desimone with a current schoolrecord-tying run of eight straight that equals the eight in a row the Bears put together from 1997-2004. Desimone has a total of 62 stroke-play victories in his Cal career and has coached 13 All-Americans (Arroyo, Furth, Hagy, Homa, Jeff Hood, Kim, Larson, Lee, Mina, Stalter, Tomasulo, Weaver, Wi) who have earned 20 All- American honors including a school-record five during the 2012-13 season. Hagy was a three-time All-American, while Homa, Kim, Stalter, Tomasulo and Weaver were all named twice. The Bears have also had success in the classroom during Desimone s tenure with 13 All-America Scholars (Bill Albers, Scott Carlyle, Chun, Dan Coyle, Furth, Gandranata, Hagy, Hale, Murphy, Stalter, Tomasulo, Weaver, Michael Wilson) that have combined to earn the award given only to juniors and seniors 23 times. Hagy, Stalter and Weaver all earned the honor in each of the last two seasons to join Albers, Chun, Carlyle, Furth, Hale, Tomasulo and Wilson as two-time honorees. Carlyle was also selected a first-team Academic All-American in 2004, while Hagy was a first-team Capital One Academic All- America Division I Men s At-Large selection in 2013-14, becoming the first Cal golfer to earn first-team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) since Carlyle. Hagy s academic prowess also helped earn him the Byron Nelson Award in 2013-14, as well as the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal. In addition, he was a third-team 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-America pick for the Division I Men s At-Large squad. In addition to their success both on and off the course at Cal, Desimone has coached several Cal players that have gone on to play professional golf including current PGA TOUR card holders in James Hahn and Homa. Charlie Wi is arguably the most successful former Cal golfer on the PGA TOUR, having finished second five times in his career, most recently at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He is looking to regain his PGA TOUR card after 11 previous seasons on the tour. Hahn, who finished fifth on the final Web. com Tour money list in 2012 to earn his PGA TOUR card, is in his third season on the PGA TOUR in 2015 and also had his best career finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro- Am, tying for third in 2013. Homa has earned full-time PGA TOUR status in 2015 after finishing 17th on the Web. com Tour s money list in 2014. He played in 14 PGA TOUR events in 2013 and 2014. Tomasulo and Kim are both on the Web.com Tour, while An is on the European Tour and Stalter the European Challenge Tour. All have played in PGA TOUR events along with Hagy, Hamilton, Jesse Ruda, Weaver and Wilson. Several others have played professionally on other tours, with George Gandranata, Hagy, Hale, Jeff Hamm, Michael Jensen, Lee, Mina and Weaver currently active in the professional ranks. In addition to pro golf, Desimone and his players have had success at high-level national and international events outside of Cal. Desimone had the honor of being the coach of the American team at the 2014 Palmer Cup at Walton Heath Golf Club near South of London with Hagy one of his players. Kim, Stalter, Tomasulo and Weaver have also played in the Palmer Cup, while Homa, Kim and Weaver have competed in the Walker Cup. All but Hagy (2014) and Tomasulo (2003) participated for their country in 2013. In August of 2012 Cal players made arguably the strongest showing ever by active members of the same collegiate team at the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club, when four of the school s national-best five qualifiers reached the Final 64. Weaver finished as the runner up, while Hagy reached the semifinals, Homa the Final 32 and Kim the Final 64. Huddy was also a participant in the stroke-play portion of the event. The amateur play during the summer of 2010 was also noteworthy as a school-record six then-current Bears An, Jamie Coré, Homa, John Murphy, Ben Mangum and Mina qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay. No other school in the country had as many qualifiers. An, an incoming freshman who had become the event s youngest winner ever at the age of 17 in 2009 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., reached the 2010 semifinals while attempting to defend his title. Homa made the quarterfinals before falling to An. In addition to his coach of the year selections, Desimone has earned several other prestigious honors most recently when the Northern California Golf Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2014. The previous year the California Golf Writers & Broadcasters Association made Desimone the first coach to receive the Jack Lemmon Ambassador of Golf Award. Both honors were presented in February at the CGWBA s annual gala event during the week of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Three years earlier, Desimone was one of seven members of the 2010 class inducted into the GGCAA Hall of Fame during the Reception and Awards Banquet at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. In addition to his role as Cal s head coach, Desimone is also the former Manager of the University of California Golf Club (1979-2010), a 130-member associate club of the Northern California Golf Association, as well as a former member of the PING Advisory Committee for college golf. In addition, he served two stints on the NCAA Pacific Region Selection Committee for the NCAA Western Regional (1991-93, 2002-04) and was on the campus-wide NCAA Self-Certification Committee in the mid-1990 s. Desimone played men's basketball for the Bears as an undergraduate and then served in the United States military before returning to Cal to complete a double major in history and physical education, while also earning his master s degree in physical education. After graduating from Cal, Desimone became the Director of Athletics at College Preparatory School in Oakland where he remained until 1988. Desimone returned to Cal in 1979 as the men s golf head coach, and shared responsibilities with both jobs until 1988, when he joined Cal on a full-time basis. Desimone lives in Orinda with his wife, Linda. The couple has two children who live in Minneapolis. Q&A with Steve Desimone CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS Can you describe the culture of the Cal men s golf program? Cal golf is really pretty simple. It s finding a way to create or develop the best student-athletes in the United States. Our job as a program is to build that foundation and then to support them in every way. I can say with a smile that when you look at our track record we ve done a pretty good job of doing that. Can you describe the development of the 2014-15 team since the beginning of the fall? We are about where I thought we would be at this point. The reason our team has been so good the last three years is that our traveling team was just a step or two above our non-travelers. The players that just couldn t crack the lineup because the top players were so strong would be playing on almost any other team in the country. Now, everyone is closer to the same level and we have a larger group of really good players that can battle for spots in the lineup at any time. That type of roster produces some knockdown; drag it out qualifying with incredible pressure. The good news is that this is how we ve developed previous teams and that s what s coming next for us. We are on a similar trajectory to where we were five years ago with such a young team. What did the team accomplish in the fall of 2014? We did a great job learning and competing, which is all part of the evolution of a program. I think we accomplished what we wanted and that was for these guys to understand what it is to be a student in college, to be a part of a golf team, and what it takes to succeed in both. What is the camaraderie like that develops on a college golf team? It s practicing together, eating dinner after qualifying rounds or studying for the same class together. It s seven or eight guys, including coaches, in a van. In many respects that s kind of like our locker room. We let our hair down, laugh and just have a great time. It s part of the closeness of being a team. How difficult was it to say goodbye to four seniors Brandon Hagy, Pace Johnson, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver at the end of 2013-14 and the end of an era? What did you tell the team after the NCAA Championship? It was both simple and difficult. I said it was the last time we would ever be together like this. Being a part of what we ve done and getting to a point where we re saying goodbye carries a heavy heart. I told them that we didn t fully achieve everything that we wanted to, but very few teams do. They had to keep in perspective that they were part Head Coach Steve Desimone of one of the two best programs in college golf for the last three years. As they get older, they will treasure the memories they created, the friendships they made and the fellowship they had. They ll also have a chance to reflect on the incredible success of the program, what they ve built and the legacy they ve left. I told them that we all should have tremendous pride in what has happened with the program, they ve all been a big part of it, and that every one of them is off to bigger and better things. What are your goals for the 2015 spring season? The primary goal is certainly to return to the NCAA Championship. We re very proud of the fact that over the last five years we re one of only six teams in the country that have played in all five NCAA Championships. This is obviously a transitional year because of the four outstanding seniors we lost from a year ago, but I don t want to say it s a rebuilding year because I feel like we have the players that will return us to the NCAA Championship. We developed very nicely in the fall, and I think we will be a much better team by the end of the spring. How is the team aspect of college golf unique in the sport? In the end we hope that the players understand when the score goes up it is under Cal. We re a team, a unit, a family. We generally want to recruit players that have been involved in team sports and understand that concept so they know there is something bigger than themselves. We ve had a lot of success with that approach and it is one of the key elements for us in the recruiting process. Once we have brought those types of student-athletes into our program we then hope through character and personality that there are bonds formed. We want to identify players that are good guys, easy to get along with and want to be part of a team. Do you coach a younger team like this year s squad differently than a veteran group such as last season? Yes. We give the veteran players much more latitude in terms of shot selection. They know how to manage their games better and are not prone to making major mistakes that lead to big numbers. In terms of the rotation Walter Chun and I use on the course during tournaments, we re naturally more comfortable with how we work with veteran players. We are still learning the games of new players and what they re thinking in competition. We also have to understand we re still in the development phase, whereas over the last three years we were right at the pinnacle of college golf. We had accomplished players that learned a system. There were key points that we wanted them to understand and really adopt. They did a great job with that and really knew what they were doing. That process 2014-15 Men's Golf Annual Report 7

has started anew with this group, but this year s players have been picking things up very quickly. Still, there s physical development, psychological growth, understanding of the game and adjusting to life at Cal. All of those things work together as part of their developmental progression. Can you compare the players in this year s freshman class to those who have left Cal over the past two seasons? There s no question that from start to finish the best recruiting class to this point was the 2009 group of Brandon Hagy and Max Homa and Michael Weaver. But the four freshmen we have now in Sebastian Crampton, Ben Doyle, Tanner Hughes and KK Limbhasut are off to an excellent start. The comparisons between the program now and when the 2009 group started are somewhat parallel. The current group knows there s an opportunity for multiple runs at an NCAA title in the future. I think what you are seeing is a potential rerun of what we ve had over the past five years and if so it s going to be fun to watch. This program has a chance to develop and these players have a chance to turn into something special. We thought that five years ago and we believe this group has the same potential. How does the 2015 recruiting class fit into the future of the program? We signed one of the best recruiting classes in the country for 2015 in Jamie Cheatham, Collin Morikawa, Alex Park and Sean Yu. Walter and I are excited that these young men have chosen the Cal men s golf program to help pursue their dreams. All of them have a tremendous balance of school, golf, citizenship and character. What s even more exciting is that they can t wait to be part of the team atmosphere. When you add all that up, you know the program will continue to move in the right direction and make the Cal golf community proud. It s a great time to be a part of this program. What does the competition in the Pac-12 look like this season? The Pac-12 looks to be more wide open than it s been in maybe the last seven or eight years and I think we can compete with anybody. What are the biggest concerns for your team in the spring of 2015? Clearly experience is a major factor, and health is always a factor. If we can gain experience throughout the course of the season and stay healthy, we should be right there in the mix when the postseason comes around. Is not having any seniors on the 2014-15 team one of your concerns in terms of leadership? No, not at all. We have some of the more experienced players on this team like juniors Shotaro Ban and Keelan Kilpatrick taking leadership roles. They re been through a lot of college golf at the highest level. Over time we will develop new leadership, too. What is your coaching style? Overall, you can call this program a benevolent democracy, or a benevolent dictatorship [lots of laughs]. Call it what you will but it is collaborative, interactive and also fact-based. We compile a huge statistical base and use that as a starting point for discussing with our players their strengths and weaknesses. We do everything we can from that statistical base to put together the right types of games and drills that will work on those strengths and weaknesses. Our goal is to build a foundation that will allow each player the opportunity to improve. From a development standpoint, we want to work with players and experiment in terms of what works and what doesn t. We want it to be as open as possible and then we want the players to determine primarily though qualifying who the best players are and which players are going to play. What does the emergence of Cal players in professional golf the past several years say about the program? We have several players playing professionally all over the world. I think that speaks to both the type of players we have been able to recruit and their development once they ve been in our program. What has all the recent success at levels beyond the collegiate game by Cal players done for the program? The profile of the program has risen tremendously, and that s certainly given us an added boost in recruiting. The accomplishments of our players are closely followed by recruits and their families. They see what our players are doing and believe that there must be a lot of good things happening in our program. Our goal as a coaching staff is to keep that going so we are consistently one of the best programs in the country. I believe we can keep the quality of this program going for a long time. Can you talk about the program s philosophy in terms of recruiting and player development? We ve had a lot of success both in recruiting and developing players. We haven t had a lot of guys ranked highly as junior golfers, but what it takes to succeed at Cal isn t just hitting a golf ball and making a putt. It is clear that when we have success we have more and better players interested in what we re doing. We feel like once we get a player here who has some ability and the willingness to learn, we can help to develop him into an upper-level collegiate player. How important are academics at Cal? We want a program where players can participate in a nationally-competitive golf program and also access the great educational opportunities at Cal, and that s what we have. We ve been among the top teams in academics at Cal and nationally for several years. It s part of our culture and we make that expectation known right up front to our recruits and their families. Simply, what does it mean to be a Cal golfer? It means you ve accepted the challenge and committed yourself to being the best student-athlete and teammate you can possibly be. Can you talk about the annual Cal Golf Tournament and its role in your fundraising efforts? Our annual Cal Golf Tournament is the single most important non-competitive day of the year for our program and the cornerstone of our fundraising. We raise roughly a third of the funds necessary to operate the team during the year from that one event. It is a critical day for us, and we can t function without it. It s a fun day. We call it a tournament, but it is really a party and celebration of Cal men s golf. When you have as many returnees to the tournament as we do, you know people are having a lot of fun and believe in what we re doing. They celebrate the program, which in the end is the young men on our team. It s gratifying for us that we get that kind of support. What is the Cal Golf Committee and how important is it to the program? The origins of the committee go back to 1980 and it has expanded beautifully. The committee is primarily responsible for funding our program. There should be no doubt that without the committee and guys like Russ Bigelow, Frank Brunk, Joffa Dale, Ken Lloyd, Bob Scuitto, and so many other friends of the program, Cal men s golf program would not exist. This was all the Cal Golf Committee. Yes, I ve been the coach for more than 35 years and from a programmatic standpoint I can say with a smile that things have gone well. But without the support of the Cal Golf Committee and its energy, none of this would have happened, and what a loss that would have been. No Charlie Wi, no Peter Tomasulo, no Ben Furth, no Walter Chun, no Max Homa, no Michael Kim, no Brandon Hagy, no national championship, no All-Americans, no All-America Scholars, the 2012-13 team would not have existed, and on and on. To think that none of this would have existed at Cal is an awful, tragic thought. No one knows with certainty if we ll ever win another national championship, but I do know we re going to be competing for more and I do know that our student-athletes are getting a great education. They re playing really good golf and they re growing as people. All of that runs directly back to the Cal Golf Committee. It s one of the truly great success stories in the history of Cal Athletics. The program is currently in an endowment campaign. Can you discuss the importance of that campaign? It s exciting. We re about halfway to our goal of $12 million, which would solidify the program s sustainability forever. It s important to keep on pushing to reach that goal. 8 2014-15 Men's Golf Annual Report

WALTER CHUN Associate Head Coach 11th Season Cal, 2001 Walter Chun is in his 11th season on the Golden Bears coaching staff and his sixth as associate head coach in 2014-15. The Bears have reached the NCAA Championship in each of his first five campaigns in his current role after a previous five-year absence. Chun was promoted to the position he now holds in September of 2009 after five seasons as an assistant coach. He was also as an administrative assistant when Cal won the NCAA title during the 2003-04 season Walter and I are in this together, head coach Steve Desimone said. We talk constantly about what we re doing and how we re doing it. We re always looking to find ways to improve and be a better team. What one of us doesn t think of the other one does. That s how a good team and a good staff work. He s been a tremendous asset, ally and friend. I could never say enough good things about Walter. Chun has been instrumental in the accomplishments achieved during the recent golden era of the program that arguably came to an end following the 2013-14 campaign when four of the team s five players at the 2014 NCAA Championship finished their collegiate careers but not before the Bears extended their school-record run of consecutive appearances at the event to each of the last five seasons, a claim only six teams in the country can make. The accomplishments of the last three teams of the era were unprecedented not only at Cal but on a national level as the Bears won 24 of 40 stroke-play events and were in the top five on 38 occasions as well as each of its four match-play tournaments during the period. The final stretch of the era also included two appearances in the national semifinals (2012, 2013), a single-season NCAA record 12 stroke-play victories in 2012-13 when the Bears were widely thought to have recorded the best season in the history of college golf, and both the first two NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history (2012, 2013). Cal spent nearly the entire 2012-13 season as the nation s top-ranked team and despite a second straight defeat in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship, remained No. 1 in all three final national polls with both the Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat rankings released following the NCAA Championship and the Golf World/Nike Golf poll prior to the event. The Bears had several firsts in 2011-12, including an NCAA Championship match-play victory over San Diego State in the quarterfinals, a trip to match play at the NCAA Championship, NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles, a then-schoolrecord six victories, and top-five finishes in all 12 stroke-play events and 15 tournaments overall. Chun has also played a huge role in the team s recent run of success through his recruiting and player development capabilities including the recruitment of a promising 2014 class that has begun a new era in Cal golf. The class includes three players in Sebastian Crampton, Ben Doyle and KK Limbhasut that played a significant role in the team s strong 2014 fall that included two victories to go with second, third and sixth-place finishes. Crampton registered a team-low 70.00 stroke average and three finishes in the top seven, while Limbhasut was in the top 15 three times and one of only two players to participate in all five events. Doyle saved his best performance for the final event of the fall at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational against a top field that included four top-10 teams. Tanner Hughes is the other member of the class and will redshirt his first season at Cal in 2014-15 but had tremendous amateur success during the 2014 calendar year, becoming the first player to ever win both the Christmas Classic and Tour Championship presented by Callaway Golf in the same season. Hughes was named the AmateurGolf.com Player of the Year. The last two recruiting classes that also includes a highly-touted 2015 group join a long list of players Chun has helped recruit with several turning into top-notch golfers such as Brandon Hagy (All-America Scholar, All-Nicklaus Team, The Ben Hogan Award Semifinalist, Byron Nelson Trophy, first-team Academic All-American, first-team All-American, Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Palmer Cup), Stephen Hale (All- America Scholar, All-Pac-10), Max Homa (firstteam All-American, NCAA Champion, Pac-12 Champion, U.S. Open, Walker Cup), Michael Kim (All-Nicklaus Team, first-team All-American, Palmer Cup, Unanimous National Player of the Year, U.S. Open, Walker Cup), Eric Mina (All- American, Pac-10 Champion), Joël Stalter (All- America Scholar, All-Nicklaus Team, first-team All-American, Palmer Cup) and Michael Weaver (All-America Scholar, first-team All-American, Masters, Palmer Cup, Walker Cup). He also recruited Ben An (Byeong-Hun An) after he became the youngest champion in the history of the U.S. Amateur at the age of 17 in 2009. Walter has really good interpersonal skills and connects with people, and has great instincts with young people, Desimone said. With Walter you know you will get as genuine of a human being as you will ever find, which I think relates very well to young people and their parents. He s bright, articulate and a great representative of our program and the University of California. Chun has been recognized nationally for his coaching exploits. He was honored with the Jan Strickland Award as the nation s top assistant coach for his work during the 2007-08 season. In June of 2009, he served as a Team USA assistant coach for the Palmer Cup. CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS Chun is in his 18th season associated with the Cal men s golf program since he began his playing career for the Bears in 1997. He was a two-time team captain while competing on three occasions at the NCAA West Regional (2000-02) and once at the NCAA Championship (2000). Chun has also qualified for two U.S. Amateur Championships, the first in 1999 at Pebble Beach and the second in 2002 at Oakland Hills Country Club. Chun received a pair of degrees at Cal with his bachelor s degree from the Haas School of Business in 2001 and his master s from the Graduate School of Education in 2003. He was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection (2000, 2001, 2002) and a two-time All-America Scholar (2001, 2002). He and his wife, Grace, live in San Ramon along with their son, William. His parents, Won Pyo and Yong Soon, live in Memphis, Tenn., while his older brother Charles resides in Emeryville. GENE BAKKUM Volunteer Assistant Coach 13th Season UC Davis, 2000 Gene Bakkum is in his 13th season at Cal in 2014-15 and his 11th as a volunteer assistant coach after a previous two previous campaigns as assistant coach (2002-04) for the Golden Bears. Prior to arriving at Cal, he also served for two seasons as an assistant men s golf coach for his alma mater UC Davis (2000-02), helping the Aggies to a No. 1 ranking in Division II men s golf and back-to-back NCAA West Regional appearances. Bakkum is also currently in his 11th year as assistant director of instruction at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, and has instructed at the Nike Jr. Golf camps in Pebble Beach, where he served as assistant director. Bakkum was previously the director of the Nike Coaches All-Star Golf Academy in Phoenix, and has been affiliated with PGA of America since 2005. Gene works really well with young people, head coach Steve Desimone said. He is an absolute golf junkie and a very likeable person with a good sense of humor and fun attitude. He enjoys the game, loves to teach golf and is a tremendous short game instructor, which is critical when you are developing players. Gene has done some really great things with our players over the years. He and his wife, Alicia, reside in Pleasant Hill with their daughters Ava and Alaina. 2014-15 Men's Golf Annual Report 9

Outlook Shotaro Ban Cameron Shaw A NEW ERA UNDERWAY The last five seasons are considered to be the golden era of the Cal men s golf program with the top highlights including two appearances in the national semifinals, a schoolrecord five consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship, victories in 30 of 68 strokeplay events, a single-season NCAA record 12 stroke-play wins in 2012-13, and both the first two NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history. There were plenty of other firsts during the era including Michael Kim s selection as both the unanimous National and Pac- 12 Player of the Year in 2012-13 and Max Homa s NCAA individual title the same campaign. Homa along with Brandon Hagy and Michael Weaver also became the first three players in the history of the program to play in the NCAA Championship four times each. In addition, the Golden Bears had five firstteam All-Americans Hagy, Homa, Kim, Joël Stalter and Weaver during the era that ended with the graduation of four seniors following the 2013-14 campaign. The 2014-15 Cal men s golf team is looking to begin a new era with a seniorless roster that features four freshmen, with three of the rookies contributing last fall and all four figuring to play a prominent role in the future. Desimone likes what he sees in the rookie foursome of Sebastian Crampton, Ben Doyle, Tanner Hughes and KK Limbhasut. We are in a similar situation that we were in five years ago when Brandon [Hagy], Max [Homa] and Michael [Weaver] were freshmen, Desimone said. We are in the early stages of what should be another great period for our program. Crampton burst onto the collegiate scene as a true freshman in the fall of 2014 with a team-high three top-10 finishes highlighted by a third-place showing when he led the Bears to a victory at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Crampton, who led the squad with a 70.00 stroke average while playing in each of the final four fall events, was also tied for fourth in his Cal debut at the Windon Memorial and tied for seventh at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate. Doyle was in the lineup for three of Cal s five events during the 2014 fall season and saved his best golf for the final event of the fall when he tied for 35th at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. Doyle was also under par in two of his final five rounds in the fall and got off to a strong start in 2015 amateur action when he tied for seventh at the Saguaro Amateur. Hughes will redshirt his first season at Cal in 2014-15 but has had tremendous amateur success during the period, becoming the first player to ever win both the Christmas Classic and Tour Championship presented by Callaway Golf in the same calendar year in 2014 when he was named AmateurGolf.com Player of the Year. Upon his arrival at Cal in the fall of 2014, Limbhasut picked up where he left off in junior golf by earning the No. 1 spot in the lineup for the team s season-opener at the Gopher Invitational. In his second tournament, he posted a collegiate career-best tied for fourth place finish at the Windon Memorial. Limbhasut ended up with a team-hightying three top-15 finishes in the fall, adding a tied for 11th place showing at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and tying for 13th to lead Cal s effort at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. The strong play of the freshmen in the fall of 2014 was not unexpected given their credentials prior to arriving at Cal that included but certainly was not limited to a near miss at qualifying for the U.S. Open by Crampton in 2012, a 2014 U.S. Amateur appearance from Doyle, and 2014 first-team Rolex Junior All-American honors and a Wyndham Cup selection by Limbhasut. that we have to fill from the guys who have graduated the past couple of years, Crampton said. It may be real difficult to put together the regular season they had in 2012-13, which many thought was considered to be the best in the history of collegiate golf, but I believe our class certainly has what it takes to get back to the number one spot and be a serious contender for the national title in the upcoming years. This year s freshmen class is one of the strongest groups of players we have ever brought into Cal, Desimone said. It really does remind me of 2009 when I looked at those guys together on the driving range and thought they are going to take us to the NCAA Championship multiple times. Several other returnees should bolster this year s freshmen group as the Bears expect two juniors (Shotaro Ban, Keelan Kilpatrick), two sophomores (Walker Huddy, Cameron Shaw) and one redshirt freshman (Alexander Wilson) to be battling for spots in the lineup along with Crampton, Doyle and Limbhasut. Ban is the team s only player with experience at the NCAA Championship level as the only non-senior in a 2013-14 lineup that finished tied for 11th. Along with Kilpatrick he is one of Cal s two most experienced players and will be looked upon to provide leadership for a young 2014-15 squad. Ban had a pair of top-10 finishes at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational and Aggie Invitational in 2013-14 among five top-20 showings. He has battled through injuries to both wrists during his Cal career and played just once in the fall of 2014 but is healthy and expected to be a key contributor in the lineup during the spring of 2015. We re going to need Shotaro to play well, Desimone said. There s a scenario for us where this team can be very good and a big part of that scenario is Shotaro playing well. Kilpatrick has played more golf at Cal than anyone including Ban and registered a solid fall that was highlighted by his performance at the season-opening Gopher Invitational when he tied for third in the best showing of his collegiate career. Kilpatrick also tied for sixth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Shaw had the most impressive fall of any of the team s returnees and arguably the entire roster. He was the lone Cal player to win an individual title when he shared medalist honors at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate for his first collegiate victory and also tied for second at the Windon Memorial. His tie for 15th at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational gave him three top-15 finishes to match Crampton and Limbhasut for the team lead. Huddy played four times in the fall, equaling career best finishes twice when he tied for 12th in each of the team s first two events at the Gopher Invitational and Windon Memorial. Sebastian Crampton KK Limbhasut Ben Doyle CALIFORN GOLDEN BEARS Wilson did not play but is expected to be in the mix in the spring. The remainder of a young roster includes a pair of sophomores in Alex Helgans and Andrew Morgan and two redshirt freshmen in Jay Burlison and Clayton Madey. The Bears won two of five events in the fall while finishing second, third and sixth in the other three. Cal started its season with a second-place finish at the Gopher Invitational with Kilpatrick s career-best tied for third-place showing leading the way. Huddy was next in a tie for 12th. Shaw (T24th), Limbhasut (T30th) and Ban (T40th) also played with Limbhasut making his collegiate debut and Ban his only appearance of the fall. The Bears won their first event of the fall at the Windon Memorial, breaking their own tournament record for a single-round team score with a 10-under par final-round 270. Shaw led Cal to its 13-stroke victory by tying for second place and was joined in the top five by Crampton in his collegiate debut and Limbhasut with his highest collegiate finish, tying for fourth. Huddy also played and tied for 12th for the second straight event, while Doyle made his collegiate debut and tied for 41st. Kilpatrick tied for 17th playing as an individual. Shaw would lead Cal again in the Bears next event at the Itani Quality Homes College by registering the first victory of his career as he tied for individual medalist honors while the team finished third. Crampton recorded his second straight top-10 finish by tying for seventh while Kilpatrick (T30th), Limbhasut (T34th), Huddy (T39th) and Doyle (T62nd) also played with Doyle participating as an individual. Cal edged Arizona State by a pair of shots at its own Alister MacKenzie Invitational in its next event. Crampton led the way with a career-best third-place finish, while Kilpatrick (T6th), Limbhasut (T11th) and Shaw (T15th) were all in the top 15. Huddy also participated and tied for 35th. In its final event of the fall in a field that included four of the nation s top 10 teams, Cal was sixth at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. Limbhasut led the way by tying for 13th, while Shaw (T22nd), Crampton (T35th), Doyle (T35th) and Kilpatrick (T43rd) were also in the lineup. Crampton s team-low 70.00 stroke average was followed by Shaw (70.73), Kilpatrick (71.33), Limbhasut (71.60), Huddy (72.08), Doyle (73.00) and Ban (76.33). Cal finished the fall season ranked No. 21 in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll, while the Bears were No. 22 in both the GCAA Coaches and Golfstat rankings. Just over three weeks later the Bears return to the John A. Burns Intercollegiate (February 18-20) hosted by Hawai i at the Wailua Golf Course on the island of Kauai. Cal has won the event each of the last four years, which is the longest streak in the tournament s history. The Bears will make their second trip of the spring to the Tucson area February 28 March 2 for the National Invitational Tournament hosted by Arizona at the Omni Tucson National Resort s Catalina Course. Cal will be looking to repeat as the winner after its firstever victory at the event last season. Cal will close out its pre-spring break schedule with a March 9-11 visit to the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters hosted by UNLV at the Southern Highlands Golf Club. The Bears lone victory at the event that annually hosts one of the nation s top fields came in 2013. After more than three weeks out of action over spring break, Cal starts its final stretch of the regular season April 4-5 at the Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. The Bears played the event for the first time in 2013-14 and tied for fourth. Cal finishes the regular season April 11-12 locally at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. In 2012-13, the Bears won for only the second time in school history and the first time since 1950. The postseason begins April 27-29 at the Pac-12 Championship to be played at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club and co-hosted by the Pac-12 and Washington State. Cal has played the course once already this season, finishing third in late September at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate that featured seven Pac-12 teams. The Bears have won the Pac- 12 Championship twice with both of those victories coming in the last three seasons. Cal won its first conference title in dramatic fashion in 2012 when Hagy forced a playoff with Oregon by sinking a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore., and then clinched the victory with a 25-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole. Cal cruised to a nine-stroke win at the 2013 Pac-12 Championship played at Los Angeles Country Club with Homa the third individual medalist of the event in school history, joining Charlie Wi (1995) and Eric Mina (2010). NCAA postseason competition begins with Regional action May 14-16 at a location yet to be determined. The six possible sites are Bremerton, Wash. (Gold Mountain Golf Club Host Washington); Chapel Hill, N.C. (Finley Golf Course, Host North Carolina); Lubbock, Tex. (Rawls Course, Host Texas Tech); New Haven, Conn. (The Course at Yale, Host Yale); Noblesville, Ind. (Sagamore Club, Host Ball State); and San Diego, Calif. (Farms Golf Club, Host UC San Diego). Cal won its first two NCAA Regional titles in school history at Stanford in 2012 and Pullman in 2013. The Bears have qualified for NCAA Regional action 19 times in school history, including each of the last eight seasons to tie a school record for consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. A top-five NCAA Regional finish would extend Cal s school-record string of appearances in the NCAA Championship to six in a row and give the Bears their 14th trip to the event overall. Cal is one of only six teams in the country to have played in each of the last five NCAA Championships. This year s event will be hosted by South Florida and played Friday-Wednesday, May 29 June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. For the first time ever, the men s and women s NCAA Championships will be hosted at the same site. The women s event runs Friday- Wednesday, May 22-27. The format of the NCAA Championship will be adjusted for the second consecutive season in the second year of Golf Channel s live television coverage. The top 15 teams from the first 54 holes of stroke play conducted Friday-Sunday will move on to a fourth round of stroke play on Golf Channel s first day of live coverage Monday. The individual title will also be determined Monday among players from the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on one of those squads. Kilpatrick entered Cal as a mid-year enrollee as a freshman in January of 2012 and made an immediate impact by playing in seven of the team s 10 events in his first spring. He would redshirt the 2012-13 season as he prepared to enter Cal s prestigious Haas School of Business and work on his golf game before returning for the 2013-14 campaign. After playing only once in five 2013 fall events, Kilpatrick became a major contributor in the spring of 2014 by playing in seven of nine tournaments and earning the Co-Most Improved honors on the team. He continued to be a significant factor in the fall of 2014 when he played in all five events and registered a pair of top-10 finishes including the best showing of his career when he tied for third at the seasonopening Gopher Invitational. year in review END OF AN ERA BUT A LEGACY LEFT BEHIND (From left to right): Max Homa, Brandon Hagy, head coach Steve Desimone, Michael Weaver, Michael Kim and Joël Stalter. The first time Cal head coach Steve Desimone saw Brandon Hagy, Max Homa and Michael Weaver together on the driving range as freshmen in the fall of 2009 he told associate head coach Walter Chun these guys are going to take us back to the NCAA Championship many times. Desimone s prophecy came true each of the last five years, something that had never been done before in the history of the program. They fulfilled every one of those expectations and exceeded some, Desimone said. So it hit hard when the glorious run finally came to an end with the final four seniors from the era Hagy, Pace Johnson, Joël Stalter and Weaver in the lineup at the 2014 NCAA Championship but falling just shy of a third straight trip to match play and leaving the era without a national title they came ever so painstakingly close to at both the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Championships. It had the potential for a better ending, Desimone said while fighting back tears in a 2014 interview following the team s earliest exit from the NCAA Championship in three seasons. Disappointed would be an understatement. I think devastated would be more like it. I hurt when they hurt, just like a parent. Even though there was a lot of hurt when the era finally came to a close, a look back at the past five seasons made the pain subside quickly. It was an amazing run, clearly one of the best in the history of college golf and I m so proud of them, Desimone said. Look at the overall picture of what these guys accomplished. They made five straight NCAA Championships, were the best team in the history of college golf in 2012-13, and a team that a lot of people thought would fall off the map in 2013-14 when Michael Kim turned professional in December but continued to play great and won three times in the spring before coming so close to getting back into match play at the NCAA Championship. Max Homa Just a few of the top team highlights during the five-year run included two appearances in the national semifinals in their five NCAA Championship trips, victories in 30 of 68 stroke-play events, a single-season NCAA record 12 strokeplay victories in 2012-13, and both the first two NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in school history. their careers with all five being recognized as either first or second-teamers in 2012-13 to make Cal the first team in the history of college golf to have five first or second-team All-Americans in the same season. There were plenty of other firsts during the era including Kim s selection as both the unanimous National and Pac-12 Player of the Year in 2012-13 and Homa s NCAA individual title the same campaign. Hagy, Homa and Weaver also became the first three players in the history of the program to play in the NCAA Championship four times each. There was also a ton of success off the course, most recently with the graduation of all four 2013-14 seniors, including Hagy, Stalter and Weaver from Cal s prestigious Haas School of Business. Hagy was an Academic All-American in each of his last two years while all three were All-America Scholars in their final two collegiate campaigns. Among the many honors in his 2013-14 senior season, Hagy was also selected as the winner of the prestigious Byron Nelson Award that considers equally a nominee s entire collegiate academic and golf career, his character and integrity in college, and his community service. It was amazing, Hagy said. We won God knows how many tournaments. It s been an incredible ride seeing the rise of the program since I ve been here. I made great friends and had a lot of pretty incredible highs. The firsts also extended into the highest levels of amateur golf and professional events. Homa, Kim and Weaver became what is believed to be the first three players from one collegiate team to play in the same U.S. Open in 2013. Kim was the low amateur at the event, finishing in a tie for 17th after being as high as tied for third on the leaderboard late in the third round. Weaver became the first current Cal golfer to play in the Masters in 2013 after picking up an exemption from his runner-up showing at the 2012 U.S. Amateur. The same year he would become only the second golfer in the history of the sport to play in the Masters, Palmer Cup, U.S. Open and Walker Cup in the same calendar year. Kim joined Weaver and helped lead the United States to victory at both the Palmer Cup and Walker Cup, while Homa joined Kim and Weaver in an American win in the Walker Cup. Stalter played against Kim and Weaver in the Palmer Cup as a member of Team Europe. Stalter had quite the collegiate career of his own, winning a school-record five times capped by a senior season in which he picked up three of those victories, earned first-team All-American honors for the first time in his career and had his top finishes at both the Pac-12 and NCAA Championship. Before I came to Cal I dreamed to play on a top 10 team, Stalter said. Two years after I arrived we ended up being one of the best that has ever played. I don t know how it gets better. On and off the course it was just an unbelievable experience. The accomplishments weren t limited to the players. Desimone was the unanimous National Coach of the Year in 2012-13 when the Bears had such a dominant campaign that they were ranked No. 1 in every national poll following the season despite being upset by Illinois in the match-play semifinals of the NCAA Championship. Desimone also captured Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors both that season and the previous campaign in 2011-12. In addition, Desimone was inducted into the Hall of Fames of both the Golf Coaches Association of America and the Northern California Golf Association during the era. Without a doubt we ve had an incredible five years with some of the best student-athletes in the history of both Cal Athletics and college golf, Desimone said. Those involved in our sport will be talking about what these young men accomplished for years and years. Speaking for Walter and myself it has been our honor to have coached these outstanding young men and we thank them for what they ve achieved and the legacy they have left. But as memorable as the past five years have been for Cal the future promises great memories still to be created for the players who will look to continue that legacy. I m sure they will be compared to what we ve done, which may or may not be fair to them, but we ve set the bar high hoping they can follow in our footsteps. It was an honor to have been a part of this team for four years, Homa added. I hope we played a part in changing the future of the program for the better. Johnson was happy to have contributed to the program s building process over the final three seasons of the era after transferring from Cal Poly. I have so many incredible memories that I will hold tight for the rest of my life, Johnson said. Getting an education from one of if not the best public institution in the world, as well as being a part of a golf program that has built an incredible reputation for success is so much more than I could have asked for. Even though it did indeed have the potential for a better ending Desimone expressed it best when he told a disappointed group of Bears in a team meeting after the final round of the NCAA Championship that ended the 2013-14 season that it was a phenomenal run and you all have the grandest of futures ahead of you. The 2012-13 Cal men s golf team was widely considered the greatest in the history of college golf. Max Homa became Cal s first player to win NCAA individual medalist honors in 2013 while the same season he was the third to take home the conference crown. Charlie Wi, the Pac-10 individual medalist and a first-team All- American in 1995, made his PGA TOUR debut in 2002. Peter Tomasulo was a two-time All- American and All-America Scholar, as well as a four-time All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Academic choice. Eric Mina became the second player from Cal to win Pac-10/12 individual medalist honors in 2010.
