Golf Course Maintenance Mike Epps Golf Course Superintendent Golf season is here and the golf course is playing great. If you haven t been out to play you re missing out on a good thing. We have had some very nice rain during the last part of March and some nice warm weather to set April as a great month for course conditions. We have been verti-cutting the tees, approaches, and fairways. Vertical mowing helps to reduce thatch and stimulates new growth. Mowing of these areas, helps firm up playing conditions and reduce grain for those tight chip shots around the green. We have two ways of vertical mowing of these areas. One way is with a set of dedicated verti-cut units, which can go as deep 0.25 into the soil profile. We put these dedicated units on a fairway mower. Typically, we do this about 3-4 times during the growing season. The other way is the use of groomers, which are a scaled down version of verti-cutters. These are part of our regular mowing units on our fairway mowers. The groomers typically are set at half of our cutting height. For example, when we mow fairways at 0.5 we groom at 0.25. The end result is and very upright growing grass that allows for great ball roll and a better playing conditions. The golf course is off to a great start this year and you need to be out playing! I look forward to seeing you out on the golf course soon, and my goal is to have the course in the best condition possible every day for your enjoyment. If you have any questions or concerns please call or e-mail me (817-294-6615, mepps@miravistacountryclub.com ) or come ride the course with me. Thank you for your time. Mike Epps Golf Course Superintendent Welcome our new Sous Chef Jordan Ray. Jordan actually grew up here at Mira Vista and is exultant that he is able to come back and bring his talent to our Members. He is a graduate of the Culinary School of Fort Worth! Prior to joining our team, he was the Chef at Trophy Club Country Club and was the Director of Training for Fuzzy s Taco Shop, where he developed the recipe book and was promoted to District Manager. Most recently he owned and operated three Sawbuck Restaurants. When Jordan isn't behind the apron and creating amazing dishes, he loves to play golf and spend time with his 1 year old son. He was Mira Vista s Jr. Golf Champion 3 Years in a row!
