Designing a Pond Loop using Alan Watts, CGD, IAI AWEB Supply Baton Rouge, LA
The POWER of WATER ¾ of the Earth Surface is covered by WATER
Some See A Pond... We See a Fuel Free, Emission Free, Power Plant created through demand reduction when used in conjunction with geo-exchange heat pumps
Ability of Water to Handle Energy Example: 1 acre pond, 10 deep average 208 x 208 = 43,264 ft². 43,264 x 10 = 432,640 cubic feet 432,640 x 7.5 gal. cubic feet = 3,244,800 gal. 3,236,372 x 8.34 = 27,061,632 lbs... 27,061,632 lbs... or Btu s 1 Btu raises 1 lb. water 1 degree in 1 hour
Example- Small Pond Midwest A 10 ton (150,000 Btu/hr) heat pump system connected to a pond loop SLIM JIM Geo Lake Plate exchanger. Question: What effect does this system have on the temperature of the pond?
Small Pond Midwest Answer: Remember it would require approximately 27,000,000 Btu s to raise the temperature of the pond 1 Deg. F. Now, lets assume the impossible, no wind or evaporation to dissipate heat, no spring to replenish the pond water, and one 10 ton unit is running at full speed for 10 hours in cooling adding 150,000 Btu/hr into the pond. That would be a total of 150,000* 10 = 1,500,000 Btu s.
Small Pond Midwest This could change the pond temp 0.056 F per day. This is insignificant when you consider a steady 5 MPH wind blowing for 3 days can lower the pond temperature by as much as 5 Deg F.

Installation Suggested list of items used for this type of installation: (1) - 3" Back Up Flange kit (To connect 3" Flange to 3" HDPE Pipe) (2) - 3" PE Fusion Elbow 90 Adapter 3" PE Pipe Misc. Nylon wire ties to secure the rebar to the HDPE pipe from the shore to the Slim Jim plate Misc. Rebar cut to short lengths to overcome the buoyancy and allow the liquid filled HDPE pipe to sink to the bottom from the shore to the Slim Jim plate Note: PVC pipe with caped ends can be added to allow the assembly to float at the surface of the water. This will allow the Slim Jim assembly to be placed into position before the system is flushed with fluid. Once the Slim Jim assembly is positioned and flushing of the loop system has started the PVC pipe will allow the Slim Jim assembly to submerge in the upright position and sink to the bottom as the air in the Slim Jim assembly is displaced with the fluid used in the loop system. Once the Slim Jim assembly skid plates have settled on the bottom and all the air is removed from the assembly the PVC pipe can remain in place.
4SJ040TAM3F3 Installation Photos Picture Perfect
Flushing The fluid flow from the Heat Pump equipment must enter the lowest connection on the Slim Jim assembly. The fluid flow returning to the Heat Pump equipment must exit the highest connection on the Slim Jim assembly. This will insure any remaining air in the system will not be trapped in the Slim Jim assembly. For proper operation and maximum performance, follow the Slim Jim or Geo Lake Plate SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION.
Auxiliary Heat Systems on any earth/lake loop in extreme conditions may call for auxiliary heat. When this happens and the return water to the unit is 32 F or less and the unit calls for auxiliary heat, it should be designed to stay engaged until the thermostat(s) are fully satisfied and the system shuts down. This will allow for down time and loop regeneration regardless of loop type In most applications a relay will need to be added to keep the supplemental heat engaged until the thermostat(s) are fully satisfied.
