Zoo Preview Dear Teacher, Thank you for choosing to bring your students to visit us. We want you to have the best experience possible while you are here. Studies show that the more familiar students are with their field trip destination, the more prepared they will be to learn during their visit. We hope that you will be able to take the time to share this presentation with your students before they visit the Zoo. I hope that you will also visit the Field Trips page on our website where you can download a list of Field Trip Tips, and follow the link to our Field Trip Activities page. Please note that the species on display may change as our staff biologists do their best to meet the needs of our animals. Therefore, the species highlighted in this presentation may vary slightly on the day of your visit. Enjoy your walk with the animals! Construction is Done! The Rocky Shores exhibit area is back open! You will love the new windows downstairs, better viewing upstairs and LOTS of new wildlife conservation information for your students. The seals and females sea lions won t all be out in their pool together with our male sea lion Chinook for a while yet. They are taking turns checking you out and lounging in their back pools. For information about why Chinook is branded go here. http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/sealions/ There is also an information panel about this at the underwater viewing area at Rocky Shores. Follow this link for a list of other projects starting now and going through 2019: Exciting projects at the Zoo!

New Aquarium Construction The South Pacific Aquarium is not being renovated or replaced and will be open during your visit. The North Pacific Aquarium will be slowly transforming into an holding area for animals that will be moving to the new aquarium. We plan to close this aquarium to visitors on March 30 th, 2018. However, restrooms on the lower level will remain open. The new Pacific Seas Aquarium is scheduled to open in the summer of 2018 and will be home to hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, eagle rays and many other marine creatures from Baja California. This aquarium will also be the new home to many of our North Pacific Aquarium residents. New habitats will also include a California kelp forest habitat and Japanese spider crabs! Follow this link for a list of other projects starting now and going through 2019: Exciting projects at the Zoo!

Zoo Preview Hi! My name is Hanako and I am an Asian Elephant. I am here to help you get ready for your trip to the Zoo! I ll walk with you as you find out what you might see when you visit us. Are you ready to get started?

When you get to the Zoo

When you get to the Zoo

Know your way around! There are many big maps around the Zoo to help you find your way to different animals, restrooms, eating and animal exhibit areas. The adult in your group should have a map for all of you to share.

Habitats at the Zoo Southeast Asian Forests North Pacific Ocean South Pacific Ocean Arctic Tundra Rocky Shores Animals in the Kids Zone are from all over the world! The land around the Pacific Ocean is called the Pacific Rim.

The Zoo s Animals Almost all of the Zoo s animals live around the Pacific Rim (the land that touches the Pacific Ocean). You will find each animal in an exhibit named after its wild habitat. For example, in which Pacific Rim habitat would you find the Sumatran tigers? a) Rocky Shores b) South Pacific Ocean c) Asian Forest d) Arctic Tundra What about a walrus?

In the meantime, they will stay out of sight in this quiet area. Tomato Clownfish Dancing Shrimp California Spiny Lobster Pot-bellied Seahorse

North Pacific Aquarium Jammin with Jellies Closes October 10 th, 2017 Did you know that jellyfish are related to sea anemones and coral? Our jellyfish are not moving away forever, but we need to move their tanks into the new Pacific Seas Aquarium. You will get to see them next summer when the Aquarium opens! Species will vary.

North Pacific Aquarium Megalodon Jaw (This area will be closed at the end of March) This jaw model is the actual size of the Megalodon shark that became extinct 2.6 million years ago.

Note to teachers: This exhibit is seasonal. Please check our website to check see if the budgies will be accessible during your field trip.

Plants There are also plants from all over the world at the Zoo. We have different kinds of cactus and bamboo, and lots of flowers that bees and butterflies like! Please don t pick our leaves or flowers. Leave them for everyone to see!

What to do if you get lost: Find a person in a blue or green Zoo shirt. These people work at the Zoo, and they will help you find your group. You can also ask me questions about the animals. HELPFUL TIP: Take a good look at your adult chaperone. Remember what color hair they have, what color their clothes are. This will make it easier for us to help you find them!

Can you find the 5 restrooms?

If you have time and it s okay with your teacher, check out these other attractions: The carousel costs $1.50 to ride!

On your ZOO day please.. Be RESPECTFUL to the animals and other visitors.this means no yelling or throwing. Have FUN and see some amazing animals! I ll be there!
