G e o r g e M a s o n U n i v e r s i t y Intramural Sports Handbook 2012-2013 Introduction Mason Recreation believes that physical and intellectual preparations are equally important in meeting the demands and stresses of everyday living. Students, staff, and faculty are invited and encouraged to participate in any of the recreational sports activities offered. This handbook should serve as an information guide for George Mason University students and employees interested in participating in intramural sports. Participants are expected to become familiar with and abide by the information contained herein. Alcohol and Drug Policy The possession or consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs is prohibited at any Mason Recreation facility, activity, or program. In addition, if any individual is suspected of being under the influence, that person will not be allowed to participate and will be asked to leave the facility. Each team is responsible for enforcing this policy with team members and spectators. If individuals create a problem when asked to leave, the contest will be forfeited. Violators are also subject to disciplinary action in accordance with university policy. Entry Procedures 1. All entries, team and free agents will be completed online at: http://imsports.gmu.edu 2. Please download the instructions on http://imsports.gmu.edu to register as a team or individual. 3. Preseason organizational meetings are scheduled for most team activities and require the attendance of a team captain or other team member to guarantee entrance to the league. Free Agents (Players without teams) Individuals who desire to play team sports but are not able to form a team may still be involved. The individuals are encouraged to come to the Intramural Office (room 1111, RAC) and register as a free agent for the sport of interest. Players are not assigned to teams and no guarantee of team membership is made. Team captains may invite free agents to join their teams. Team captains are strongly encouraged and urged to use free agents. Team membership does not guarantee playing time. Eligibility and Participation 1. Mason Recreation cannot be solely responsible for verifying the identity of each person who participates in intramural sports. Each player is responsible for his or her own eligibility, and each organization or captain is responsible for participating members. Any cases of ineligibility brought to the attention of the official on duty or Mason Recreation will be handled according to policy. A

valid GMU ID card is required at each game. If the photo does not fit the profile of the individual on the card, the recreational sports staff reserves the right to verify the identity of person(s) through a second form of photo id. 2. All George Mason University students (currently enrolled), and faculty and staff are eligible to enjoy all intramural sports privileges except as noted below: a. Members of a George Mason varsity or junior varsity sport teams are ineligible to participate in the same or related intramural sport. Any individual who remains on any varsity teams roster during or after the first intercollegiate contest date is a member of that team. Red-shirts and individuals practicing with intercollegiate teams are considered team members. VARSITY Baseball, Softball Basketball Football Golf Tennis Volleyball INTRAMURAL Softball, Quickball, Wiffleball, Homerun Derby 3v3 Basketball, 5v5 Basketball, 3Point or Hotshot Contest 7v7 Flag Football, 4v4 Flag Football, Punt/Pass/Kick Futsal, Outdoor Soccer Tennis Sand Volleyball, Indoor Volleyball, Wallyball b. Former varsity team members are ineligible for participation in the same or related intramural sport or activity during the same academic year. **Example: Former GMU basketball player quits the team or is cut from the team on January 1, 2011. He/she would not be eligible to participate in any basketball related intramural sports activity until the start of the fall 2012 semester. However, he/she may participate in any other intramural sports activity during that time. c. No more than one former varsity volleyball or basketball player may compete on any intramural volleyball or basketball team, respectively. Other than volleyball and basketball, no more than two former varsity players may compete on any intramural team in the same or related varsity sport in which the player competed (baseball/softball, football, soccer, etc.). 3. Individuals who have been declared a professional or has played professionally in a particular sport or sports, may not compete in the same or related intramural sport. 4. Clubs sports members MUST compete in the highest level offered in the same or related sport. Example: If a member of the club soccer team wishes to play intramural soccer he/she MUST compete in the A League, if an A and B League. 5. Only two club sport team members may represent any intramural team in the same or related sport. Only one club sport member and one former collegiate (varsity) team member shall be allowed on any intramural team in the same or related sport.

6. Any individual using an assumed name or playing under the name of another player will be barred from intramural sports competition for a minimum of one year from the date of the infraction. 7. Teams using an ineligible player shall forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated and may be removed from the league. 8. A player may represent only one team in any division of men s or women s play in a given sport, regardless of level of play.. 9. Teams may add players to their rosters until start time of their final regular season game of the season. Players may not have played for any other team. Individuals may only participate on one men s or women s team and one co-rec team regardless of division. The first team an individual checks-in for, is the team they must finish the season with. 10. Players may not change teams once they have played any portion of a contest. 11. A player must have played in at least one regularly scheduled game to be eligible to participate in the play-offs. 12. Regardless of the reason, no ineligible player may compete in an intramural contest. No opposing team may give its consent for the participation of an ineligible player. 13. Late-arriving players must seek out the event supervisor to have their name placed on the scorecard. Any protest regarding player eligibility should be handled prior to the start of each game or prior to that player playing. If a player is checked and found to be ineligible, he or she may not participate in that game. Ineligibility includes not having a valid student ID. 14. University PT wage employees are eligible for participation once they have completed the Wage Employee Participation Form and have returned it to the Recreational Sports Office. You may pick this form up in the Rec Sports Office, or download it from the intramural web-site. 15. All participants competing on a team in a Special Interest League (IFC, Pan-Hellenic, Dorm) must be current residents of the dorm which they represent, or current active members of the respective organization at the time rosters are submitted to the intramural Office (RAC). IFC and Pan-Hellenic rosters will be verified with the office of Student Activities and their respective governing councils. All issues of player ineligibility will follow the Intramural forfeit policy. Team captains are responsible for verifying the eligibility status of their team members. ID Policy During any and all transactions with the university, your George Mason ID G Card officially recognizes you and defines your status as a member of the student body or campus community. Mason Recreational activities are open to current GMU students and employees only. Mason Recreation wants to provide the best services to our participants. If ineligible people participate in the program, they put the legitimate participants and the university at risk. In addition, if an ineligible person is allowed to participate, he or she takes away an opportunity for an eligible

participant. The intramural supervisors cannot and will not allow anyone to play without the proper identification. Prior to each game or contest, players must present their George Mason ID Card so they may be signed in on the scorecard. The ID shall remain on-site for the duration of the contest. Only the names of those players present will be placed on the scorecard. Late-arriving players must present their ID card to a game official or event supervisor to be added to the scorecard before entering the game. Any individual caught attempting to check-in with a University ID card that is not their own will have the card immediately confiscated by the Rec Sports Supervisor. The offending player and card owner will be subject to disciplinary action by the University honor committee. Medical Considerations/Injuries George Mason University, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Mason Recreation, and their staffs assume no responsibility for injuries received by any person during participation or involvement in any intramural sport or activity. Participants are reminded that their involvement is totally voluntary, and they are responsible for their own welfare. It is, therefore, highly recommended that all participants procure adequate medical insurance and a physical examination prior to participation. Intramural sports supervisors and staff will respond to injuries and call for emergency medical technicians when necessary but will not treat injuries. Blood-Related Injuries Rule Any player who is bleeding must leave the contest until the bleeding stops. An intramural sports staff member or game official has the authority to remove the player. If by removing the player who is bleeding the team falls below the minimum number necessary to play, the following will apply: The game clock will stop and a maximum of 5 minutes will be allowed for the player to stop the bleeding. An intramural sports staff member or game official must approve the player re-entering. If the bleeding is not stopped within the allotted 5 minutes, a forfeit will be declared. The 5-minute time allowance is only for teams that have no substitutes when a player is bleeding and do not have the minimum number of players to continue. Promotion and Publicity Intramural sports bulletin boards will be maintained in the Aquatic and Fitness Center, Skyline Fitness Center and the RACH. All pertinent information including playing schedules, postponements, team standings, coming events, etc., will be updated and posted in these locations. Broadside is recognized as a vital means of publicity for recreational sports events. All participants should bear in mind, however, only material printed and distributed by the Office of Recreational Sports should be considered as the official source of information. Upcoming event flyers are distributed and posted around George Mason University s Fairfax Campus. Information is available by calling the recreational sports information line at (703) 993-4681. Messages can be left on this line for the intramural sports office.

Sportsmanship - Individual Conduct The intramural sports program is designed for enjoyment. It is expected that all participants will conduct themselves in a manner that will not impair the well-being of other participants. All individuals or organizations participating shall be expected to comply with the spirit as well as the letter of the rules that cover all competitive and noncompetitive situations. Good sportsmanship is a requirement, not an option, for participation in intramural sports. No game is important enough to warrant physical or verbal abuse of intramural sports employees or participants. The game official is required to remove from a contest any individual who demonstrates, by language and/or actions, behavior considered to be detrimental to the game, activity, or program. 1. Alcohol and Drugs Possession of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs is strictly prohibited. Severe penalties may be imposed. 2. Fighting Fighting, whether before, during, or following an intramural sports contest, will not be tolerated. Any individual, group, or team observed in the act of fighting will be suspended indefinitely from further participation in all intramural sports. 3. Abuse of Officials Touching an official in any way will result in ejection and may result in suspension from an intramural sport. Players, coaches, or spectators involved in physically or verbally abusing any official, umpire, referee, or supervisor will be suspended indefinitely from further intramural sports competition. 4. Cheating Any individual who is found guilty of cheating will be disqualified from intramural sports for the remainder of that sport s season and the next intramural team sport. Disqualification will carry over from one semester to the next and more severe penalties may be imposed. Examples of cheating include, but are not limited to 5. Other a. Playing on more than one team in the same sport b. Participating under an assumed name c. Withholding varsity/club status d. Participating after being suspended from competition Examples of unacceptable conduct and their minimum penalties include, but are not limited to

a. Profanity suspension from one game b. Blatant disregard of rules suspension from one game c. Intoxication suspension for the remainder of the semester or year d. Destruction of property assessment of full cost of repair or replacement and also possible suspension from participation for an indefinite period 6. Any player ejected from any contest must automatically sit out the next contest and must arrange an appointment with the Office of Recreational Sports prior to any further participation. A list of ejected players is available in the Intramural Sports Office (RAC). 7. Ejected players must leave the building or playing areas immediately. 8. More severe penalties may be imposed for any infraction of rules or for conduct that infringes on the participation enjoyment of others. 9. Decisions by Mason Recreation staff will be final. Team Conduct A team is responsible for the actions of individual members of the team and spectators directly related to the team. The conduct of players and spectators before and after the game is as important as the conduct during the game, and organizations are held responsible for their team as well as their fans conduct. Any team whose sportsmanship conduct is judged unsatisfactory by the game officials and/or intramural sports staff will be disqualified for the remainder of the season. The Intramural staff will notify the team captain of the disqualification. Teams will be encouraged and warned by the game officials to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner, but the game officials have the authority to stop any contest without warning if the conduct poses a threat to the safety of the intramural sports participants, employees, or spectators. Individuals who are causing problems will be disqualified on a case-by-case basis with the intent to eliminate the individuals responsible for the problems without punishing the entire team. However, the Intramural Sports staff reserves the right to disqualify an entire team. Team conduct, which could result in team disqualification, includes, but is not limited to: a. Disrespect toward officials and/or staff b. Fighting c. Rough play or endangering participants d. Disregard of conduct warnings by game officials Any other types of action that disrupt play or are in any other manner contrary to the orderly conduct of the intramural sports program could result in further disciplinary action by the Office of Recreational Sports.

Sportsmanship Policy Teams will be evaluated on their conduct towards the officials and the other players. Teams that do not maintain a 2.50 average will not be allowed to compete in the playoffs. A team that scores two sportsmanship ratings of 1 will be disqualified from the league. During playoff competition any team which receives a 1 or below will automatically be removed from the playoffs. In this situation the opposing team would advance to the next round regardless of the outcome. Excellent 4 Good 3 Poor 2 Abusive 1 This team did not cause any problems before, during, or after the game. This team caused minimal problems. The overall behavior of the team was acceptable. Team argued several calls, used inappropriate body language and/or unreasonable comments and conduct. Team s behavior was completely inappropriate. They received unsporting fouls, used foul language, and/or were involved in a physical altercation. Scheduling League and event schedules will be given to team captains and will be posted in the Aquatic and Fitness Center and the Field House. 1. Regardless of days and times scheduled for regular season play, make-up and playoff games may be played on any day of the week at any time. Teams normally play once a week on a specific day until the playoffs begin. 2. Intramural sports activities and events may be scheduled for any day of the week. Recent tradition has placed certain leagues on specific days of the week. We will attempt to accommodate requests for specific days, but no guarantees will be made. 3. All teams must be available to play when scheduled. All teams without enough players to start a game at game time will incur a forfeit. 4. Some individual and dual sports will be scheduled on a call-in basis. Contestants will be given a certain period of time to contact opponents, complete the match, and report results to the Office of Recreational Sports at (703) 993-GMU1.

5. Some activities will be scheduled as one-day events. All contestants must be ready and available to participate when they are called. 6. Wait-list teams will be placed solely on league and time availability. Teams could enter a league as a replacement team late in the season. Postponements and Cancellations (993-GMU1) 1. Intramural contests may be postponed or canceled because of inclement weather, unsafe playing conditions, or unforeseen scheduling emergencies. 2. Decisions concerning postponements or cancellations will be made as soon as possible when inclement weather is predicted or occurring. Teams should be prepared to play at all scheduled times. Do not assume that a game will be postponed or canceled simply because of rain. If you are unsure that your game will be played please call (703) 993-4681. 3. Because of time limitations and availability of facilities, the Intramural staff will attempt to avoid postponements or cancellations. Canceled contests which cannot be rescheduled will be recorded as a double-win. 4. Regardless of days and times scheduled for post-season play, playoff games may be played on any day of the week at any time. Be prepared to play come playoffs. Due to limitations we must stay on schedule throughout playoffs. Playoff postponements will be rescheduled as soon as possible and it is the responsibility of the team captain to notify their team members. The Intramural staff is not responsible for notifying all team members. Rescheduling Rescheduling of games at a team s request is rarely done and will not be accepted freely. Arrangements for rescheduling any game must be completed 24 hours prior to the scheduled contest and approved by the Intramural Sports staff. All games must be played during times when intramural sports staff members are available. The team captain of the team requesting rescheduling must come to the Intramural Sports Office or email imsports@gmu.edu and obtain the name and email of the opposing team s captain. If the opposing team does not agree to reschedule, the game will be played at the originally scheduled time or the requesting team can default. Both teams and intramural sports staff must agree to reschedule. Teams that reschedule on their own will receive losses for the game. The intramural sports staff can decline any request to reschedule. Playoff games may not be able to be rescheduled, and teams should be ready to play at all times. Tournament and League Play 1. Facility and time limitations, as well as the number of entries, will determine the type of league play and tournament conducted (i.e., single or double elimination, round robin, etc.). Typically, the top 50% of teams from each division will advance to playoff competition. 2. No team, regardless of its win-loss record, is guaranteed entrance to the playoffs.

3. All play will be at the same level as that of the regular season. Separate divisions of play may be established if dictated by demand (e.g., dorm division, fraternity division, staff and faculty, and independent divisions). 4. Teams who have forfeited a game during the regular season will be seeded below all teams with a similar record for playoff contention. If team A, B, and C all have records of 2-2 for the regular season, but team A has forfeited a contest due to poor sportsmanship, use of an ineligible player, or failure to show for a game, they will be placed below teams B and C. 5. In the event of league or division ties at the end of regular season play in which it is necessary to break the tie for placement in the play-offs, the following procedures will be used in priority order: a. Team(s) with a forfeit will be given the lowest priority and may be eliminated from the play-offs. b. Win-loss record. c. Points Allowed d. Points Scored e. Sportsmanship Rating f. Coin toss. If the above fail to break the tie, a coin toss by an intramural official will be used to determine rank in standings. g. A wild-card invitation may be issued to additional teams at the discretion of the intramural sports staff. 6. The play-off structure for each tournament will be decided after all entries for the regular season are received. 7. When appropriate and when time and facilities allow, division winners (i.e., fraternity/panhellenic champs vs. independent champs) will meet in head-to-head competition to determine the All-Campus Champion. Forfeit Policy The intramural sports program hopes to help relieve some stress by providing an environment that promotes a fun, safety, competitive environment that enables students to get away from the pressures of the classroom. If teams or individuals fail to show up for their games, they have deprived themselves and other participants of that opportunity to recreate. As a courtesy to their opponents and to avoid a forfeit, a team may request default for any game they will be unable to attend. To do so, the team captain must notify the Intramural staff via email at imsports@gmu.edu between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at least 24 hours prior to the game. For games on Sunday, the notification must be made by 4 p.m. on Friday. Defaults will be recorded as a loss. Two defaults will result in a team being dropped from the league.

Teams which fail to provide a minimum of 24hr notice to the intramural staff, will be charged a forfeit fee of $25 for their first forfeit. If a team forfeits or defaults twice, it is dropped without notice. A contest completed prior to a team being dropped from the league is official. A contest not played is recorded as a win for the opposing team. All payments must be paid in person at the equipment checkout desk located in the RAC. Fees which are more than 30-days past due will be placed on the student account of the team captain. Unpaid fees will cause a hold to be placed, which may limit the ability to schedule for classes or receive transcripts. Two forfeits will eliminate a team from play in the regular season and/or the tournament. In singleand/or double elimination tournament competition, one forfeit will result in the individual or team being eliminated from play. Forfeited contests will not be rescheduled. An intramural sports supervisor or head official has the authority to declare a contest forfeited when: 1. A team has not checked in at game time. 2. A team does not have the minimum number of players ready to play at the scheduled start time. 3. An ineligible player is used in any contest 4. In individual or dual matches, call-in tournaments play is not completed by the given time period. 5. A team or individual displays flagrant misconduct, partakes in a fight, or leaves the field of play prior to the completion of the contest. In each case, the team may be dropped from further competition depending on the degree of misconduct. Tournament and League Rules 1. Copies of game rules for all sport activities can be found starting on page 7. In most cases, intramural sports rules are as consistent as possible with the official intercollegiate or amateur rules as provided under the respective sport association. However, modification of rules are made in some sport activities because of playing conditions, time allotments, skill levels, league structure, and safety factors. 2. Organizational meetings will be held prior to the start of most activities to introduce rules and provide rule interpretations. Results and Records 1. All official win-loss records, participation records, and standings are maintained in the intramural sports office. 2. Unofficial results and standings will be posted in the Aquatic and Fitness Center, Skyline Fitness Center, the RAC and on http://imsports.gmu.edu. 3. Participants in individual and dual type tournaments are responsible for reporting contest results promptly to the Intramural Office..
