Brother of the Year Goes to 2013 NEPGA Intern: Letter from Arnold Palmer with Nick Erlichman Nick serves as the New England PGA s Massachusetts Chapter Operations Manager. He was a 3-year member of the Endicott College (DIII) Golf Team Beverly, MA, a 1-year member of the California University of Pennsylvania (DII) Golf Team California, PA and attended Shrewsbury High School Shrewsbury, MA. On April 22, a few days after watching the Golf Channel documentary "Arnie," Adam, 21, a keen golfer himself, wrote a letter to Palmer on behalf of Nate, asking if he "could possibly write Nate a letter wishing him good luck in college and providing him some advice along the way." He could not have known that he would get so prompt a response from a man who receives thousands of requests annually, eventually responding to all of them. The letter he sent to Nate was dated May 23, one month later. How to get recruited Many junior golfers have aspirations to continue their golf career after junior golf and want to play golf in college. For many junior golfers this is a realistic thought with the right direction and attitude. Play, play, play! The only way to get recruited by college coaches is to prove that you can play in elite junior golf tournaments. Coaches want to see your ability to bounce back after a bad round while at the same time they want to see your ability to go low. Maintaining good attitude. Realistic approach A realistic approach is something that should be well thought about when deciding on what schools to market yourself to. Golf compared to most sports has a limited number of roster spots and especially a limited number of roster spots and scholarships to give out each year. On average there is about 8-14 roster spots on a collegiate golf team. The realistic approach that you as a junior golfer need to think about is if you have a realistic chance to earn a roster spot on that team as well as a realistic chance to start in tournaments for that team. Only five college players travel and compete in each tournament. Choosing the correct school While you are looking around at schools and when it comes to the time to choose the school to go to there are many thoughts and decisions that you need to consider. Will I play as a freshman or only practice with the team my first year? Does the school have the major that I want to study? Can I picture myself spending the next four years here? Is it in the right part of the country for me? What can I afford to spend on college? My story Growing up I played a lot of competitive junior golf. I always had the motivation to play at the next level in college and did anything in my power to improve my game. Click here to continue reading. And here's the advice Palmer doled out: - Courtesy and respect are timeless principles, as well as good manners. - Knowing when to speak is just as important as knowing what you say. - Know how how to win by following the rules. - Know the importance of when and how to say thank you. - Never underestimate the importance of a good education. Has the game ever known a better ambassador than the King? No way. Here's the tweet Nate sent out of the letter from Palmer, along with a heartfelt shoutout to brother, Adam: 5

Pre-Season Preparation with Jim Salinetti, PGA, NEPGA Junior Golf Committee Chairman Congratulations on choosing the #1 Junior Tour in New England to advance your golf career, compete amongst the region s best golfers and have fun playing the great game of golf. Participating on the NEPGA Jr. Tour is a fantastic way to meet lifelong friends and achieve wonderful experiences on the golf course. As the season begins, I want to encourage you to set goals for the upcoming year and be best prepared for the competitive environment that you are now a part of. GAME PLAN If you play other team sports, what is one of the first things your coach gives you at the start of the season? A schedule of games and practices. Golf should be no different. Take a look at the NEPGA Jr. Tour s tournament schedule with your parents and/or golf coach. Hopefully you will find several events that work into your family s plans. Put these events on your calendar. Sign up using the NEPGA website. By laying out your schedule now, you will be mentally prepared to practice and compete the proper way. SET GOALS Identify what you want to accomplish this season. Set goals early on and do your best to achieve these objectives. Goals can come in all shapes and sizes. Maybe you want to become Player of the Year? That s a pretty lofty competitive goal. But if you have competed at high levels and won tournaments in the past, you should try to win the Tour s highest honor. Maybe you are trying to break 90 this year? Scoring goals are fun ways to challenge yourself every time to tee it up. Maybe you want to become a better putter? Setting game improvement goals will help you focus your practice sessions on a certain aspect of the game. My suggestion: pick one competitive goal, one scoring goal and one game improvement at the start of the season and see where you stand at the end of the year. When you have an eye on the prize you will be surprised what you can accomplish. PREPARE Preparation is key to being successful in everything you. You would never prepare to take a big science test without studying right? The same holds true in all sports, especially golf. Make the time to practice regularly. I know playing the golf course and participating in tournaments is often more exciting, but challenge yourself to work hard on your game this season. Be diligent with your practice routines and be sure to focus on your short game. Concentrate on fundamentals such as grip, alignment and posture. And make your practice sessions fun! Challenge your friends to putting contests and shot-making competitions. Whatever you do, be sure that you practice with a purpose every time. If you are mentally and physically lazy on the practice range, those habits will probably follow you to the golf course. Remember, practice does NOT make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect! ENJOY THE RIDE We are so fortunate to be able to play this great game on a regular basis. No other sport includes the athletic skill, mental toughness and social interaction that golf does. And it truly is a sport that you can play your entire life. Pretty cool if you think about it! I hope that everyone that plays our Jr. Tour appreciates everything that makes golf so special. Enjoy every step you take on the golf course and don t take yourself so seriously. No one wants to win more than I do, but remember that this is just a game. For every bad break you get on the golf course, know that a good break is right around the corner. Next time you are watching golf on television, take a look at Matt Kuchar and Lydia Ko. They are currently both top 5 players in the world and they almost always have a smile on their face during competition. Finally, get to know your fellow competitors. I met all of my best friends at junior and college golf tournaments. Take advantage of this wonderful environment that you are now a part of and enjoy every minute of it! Good luck this season. See you out on the fairways!!! Jim Salinetti is the PGA Head Golf Professional at Winchester Country Club in Winchester, MA. He is currently the Chairman of the NEP- GA Junior Golf Committee. Jim was an AJGA All-American and an NCAA Academic All-American while attending the University of Rhode Island. He competed on professional tours throughout North & South America for several years before becoming a PGA Professional. Feel free to reach out to Jim at jsalinetti@winchestercc.org with any questions pertaining to junior and collegiate golf. 6
