CLASS OF 2013 Six New Members Inducted into Athletics Hall of Fame Three former All-Americans led six inductees in the Class of 2013 of the Buffalo State Athletics Hall of Fame. Jenelle Orosz (Track & Field, 08) Buffalo State s first-ever female track and field All- American - sixth in the high jump at the 2007 Indoor NCAA Division III Championships 2007 SUNYAC and New York State high jump champion, and two-time SUNYAC runner-up Named ESPN Academic All-District and earned the President s Medal and SUNY Chancellor s Award for Student Excellence for maintaining a 3.95 undergraduate cumulative grade point average Was the 2007 Buffalo State Female Athlete of the Year Mario Hicks (Track & Field, 08) Competed for two seasons at Buffalo State after transferring from Erie Community College Earned pair of All-America certifi cates while capturing six SUNYAC Championships and four state championships Was runner-up at the 2007 Indoor NCAA Division III Championships in the 55-meter hurdles and placed fifth in the same event the following year Was the 2008 Buffalo State Male Athlete of the Year and won the Hube Coyer Award for outstanding career accomplishments John Mattey (Football, 93) Offensive lineman broke into starting lineup during his freshman season, and started every game after that Became Buffalo State s first Kodak AFCA All-American as a senior in 1993 In his four seasons, Buffalo State went 31-10 and made three consecutive postseason trips (including the fi rst in school history) After an ECAC Bowl title in 1991, Buffalo State made its fi rst-ever trips to the NCAA playoffs in 1992 and 1993 Ray Perez (Soccer, 69) Played two seasons at Buffalo State after transferring from Suffolk Community College In his fi rst season, he helped lead the team to its bestever record of 12-1-1 and a SUNYAC Championship. After advancing past Fairleigh Dickinson in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament, Buffalo State fell 2-1 against Navy in the NCAA Quarterfi nals Chris Fuller (Basketball, 73) Played three seasons of varsity basketball at Buffalo State from 1970-73 and won SUNYAC Championships and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs twice Tallied 487 points in 51 career games, averaging 9.5 points and 6.4 rebounds Named All-SUNYAC as a senior when he led Buffalo State in scoring with 15.1 points-per-game Joseph Adessa (Coach) Coached basketball and soccer at Buffalo State Helped spearhead the constuction of Houston Gym Led the soccer program from 1948-54, establishing a record of 25-25-2, including a 6-1-1 mark in 1952 Coached the school s freshmen basketball team from 1948-52 and again from 1958-60, and also led the varsity basketball team from 1952-55. In his three seasons with the varsity program, he was 35-18 for a winning percentage of.660. Rich Pete Bumkoth Jiak Julia Smith Charlotte Archdeacon 6 FALL 2013 SNAP SHOT Football The Bengals fi nished 5-5, including season-opening victories over Cortland and Brockport...11 players earned All-Empire 8 honors, including Mike Doherty (WR), Rich Pete (RB), and Tawone Williams (DL) on the fi rst team...casey Kacz (QB), Mike Feirabend (OL), Brian Greene (DE) and Chris Hall (CB) were second team, and Brandon Lathrop (OL), Anthony Sanders (DL), Shaq Frederick (LB) and Joe Going (P) received honorable mention... Cross Country The Bengals men placed seventh of 10 teams at the SUNYAC Championships and the women placed eighth...sophomore Bumkoth Jiak was the Bengals top fi nisher in six of seven meets, including fi nishing 38th at SUNYACs...Julia Smith paced the women s team in the fi nal fi ve meets of the season and crossed 43rd at the SUNYAC meet... Swimming & Diving The women s team is off to a 3-1 record in dual meets, and English exchange student Charlotte Archdeacon has already broken school records in the 200 back and 200 and 400 IM...The men s team is 2-2 and has been led by freshman diver Alec Fleet who has set the school records for six dives on both the 1 and 3-meter boards, and achived NCAA zone qualifying scores in each event...buffalo State will head to Florida just after the New Year for its annual training trip... Women s Hockey The Bengals are in their fi rst season under head coach Candice Moxley...Sophomore Nikki Kirchberger leads the Bengals through 11 games with fi ve goals and six points, and junior Kara Goodwin has four goals and fi ve points...the Bengals will open the New Year with a two-game trip to Adrian on Jan. 10 and 11... www.buffalostateathletics.com Women s Basketball The Bengals hit the holiday break with a 6-2 overall record and were 2-0 in SUNYAC play with home wins over Oneonta and New Paltz...Buffalo State closed out 2013 with a win over Babson at the Daytona Beach Shootout on Dec. 21...After a year off, senior Staci McElroy is back and leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.1 points-per-game has moved into fi fth on the school s all-time scoring list with 1,163 career points... Junior Olivia Luciani is second on the team, averaging 11.5 points, and senior Bianca Smiley is averaging 10.6 points and a team-best 9.5 rebounds...the Bengals will next play a non-conference home game against Hamilton on Jan. 6 at 5 p.m... Men s Hockey The Bengals started the season 5-5-3 overall and are in third in the SUNYAC at 4-3-2 in league play... Senior Kevin Carr was twice the SUNYAC Goalie of the Week and has a.929 save percentage with a 2.60 GAA...Dan Turgeon leads the team in scoring with seven goals and 12 points, followed by Mike Zannella with 10 points (3g, 7a)...The Bengals will play seven-straight home games in January, beginning with two against Adrian on the 3rd and 4th... Men s Basketball Men s Basketball The Bengals are 6-3 overall, including a 2-0 start in SUNYAC play with home wins over Oneonta and New Paltz...The Bengals closed out the year with a pair of impressive wins over Carthage and North Central at the Orlando, Fla. Holiday Classic... Senior forward Justin Mitchell is back after a one-year hiatus, and leads the team averaging 22.8 points and 9.1 rebounds, and became the 20th player in school history to score 1,000 career points (1,049)...Junior Roderick Epps is averaging 15.3 points, and also has 1,000 in his sights (870)...Buffalo State will return to action with a SUNYAC game at Cortland on Jan. 10...
