First XI Marist Carnival Auckland Match Reports Marist Canberra, 143, defeated by Sacred Heart Auckland, 9/268-6 December 2017. Batting: Sam Myburgh 42. Bowling: Angus Kent 5/51 (10), Sam Myburgh 2/24 (9). The opening day of the 45th Marist Cricket Carnival in Auckland met the players with a bright and humid day, as Canberra came up against the hosts on their home ground. Winning the toss and electing to bowl first in order to judge a hard and grassy wicket in a country where the team as had no experience saw an even start between bat and ball. despite an early wicket to Nick Pinkas, the Auckland batters proved how good the wicket was. Nine missed catches meant that Canberra was unable to restrict the flow of runs and despite limiting the damage in the last 10 overs, Auckland was able to reach 9/268 off their 50 overs. Angus Kent bowled well to take 5/51 of his 10 overs and Sam Myburgh bowled tightly to take 2/24 off 9 overs. Chasing, Canberra struggled early losing 3 wickets before drinks. An unfortunate mix up saw Declan Jackson run out immediately after the break and despite a fightback from Sam Myburgh (42), the constant loss of wickets meant that the team were never really in the game and lost by 125 runs. Marist Canberra, 5/62 (14.2 overs), defeated Trinity Beenleigh, 60 (23.3 overs) Batting: Sam Myburgh 16no; Bowling: Amgus Kent 5/9 (6), Joe Sidorko 3/2 (2.2), Tim McCrossin 2/15 (5) Due to low scores in yesterday's game at the venue, a great deal of debate about the wicket and what was the best course of action to take was entered in to, Canberra won the toss and elected to field. Disciplined bowling from Oli Newham with the new ball meant that Trinity were restricted to 0/35 in the first 10 overs. After that, the planets aligned and Canberra could do no wrong. Where catches went begging yesterday, everything in the air was taken with Isaac Lillie and Sam Myburgh both taking 3 catches and Sam Brearley taking another beauty at mid-wicket. A procession of wickets fell with Beenleigh being bowled out for 60 in the 24th over. The pick of the bowlers were Tim McCrossin on debut with 2/15, Joe Sidorko 3/2 and for the second day in a row, Angus Kent taking 5 wickets for 9 runs. A 10 minute changeover for the innings seemed to help Beenleigh as once again the Canberra top order failed to fire, finishing themselves losing constant wickets before limping over the line in a run chase made difficult by failing to adapt to a two paced, up and down wicket. In the end a somewhat comfortable 5 wicket margin, helped by Sam Myburgh's unbeaten 16, was achieved within 14 overs to end the game before lunch. Angus Kent received the Carnival Player of the Day for his efforts with the ball. He has now taken 10 wickets in 2 games at an average of 6. Marist Canberra, 124, defeated by St. Joseph's, 7/273. Batting: Will Pilloni 23. Bowling: Angus Kent 2/25, Joe Sidorko 2/37. Day 3 of carnival saw Canberra come up against the undefeated St. Joseph's at Lloyd Elsmore Oval, Packaranga. The boys were up for the challenge and brought a high level of intensity to the game. Despite losing the toss on a good batting wicket, Canberra contained St. Joseph's up until the 40th over where they sat on 4/173. Enter Hugh Bockingham who banged 46 of 20 balls to change the game and St. Joseph's scored 100 off the last 10 to reach 7/273. Starting positively with the bat, Canberra failed to capitalise on a good wicket and lost steady wickets throughout the innings. This combined with added pressure and a rising run rate meant that St. Joseph's was never threatened. Some late hitting from Will Pilloni (23) and Tim McCrossin (10no) got the total into three figures and Marist was bowled out for 124. Under 10 U10 Scorchers vs. Eastlake Renegades. U10 Heat vs WCMCC Heat -. U10 Thunder, 8/52, defeated by Queanbeyan White, 9/101. U10 Strikers, 0 for 121, defeated Grammar Strikers, 12 for 85. Batting: Jacob 11 runs, Will 7 runs Bowling: Will 2 for 3, Jake 2 for 6, Josh 2 for 12. Great to be back on the park for a game of cricket in sunny Pierce oval. Complete game with Captain Jake Munyard winning the toss and confidently putting Grammar into bat. A much-improved fielding performance from the boys restricted Grammar to 85 runs with 6 runouts, highlighted with a fantastic runout from Johnny when the ball was strongly hit back on his follow through and was flicking his fingers and breaking the stumps. Aiden also showed strong improvement in his fielding. Backing up was also a highlight as was Josh s much improved bowling action taking 2 for 12. The boys steadily went about their business of getting the total required (well they didn t know the score) with all the boys contributing well with work still needed with the running between the wickets. Astonishingly no wickets fell and the boys looked the part on a gorgeous Canberra afternoon. Big thanks for Gabby for organising the BBQ for the boys in their post-match celebration. U10 Sixers - bye. Under 11 Marist, 3-233, defeated Grammar Hurricanes, 12-120. Batting: Sam Smith 43*, Alex Gunn 34, Ashvin H 28, Kelley Jack 28, Walter Winton 27*. Bowling: Walter Winton 3-14, Sam Smith 2-13. Cricket returned this week with a fantastic summer s day. Grammar won the toss and chose to bat with Walter immediately finding his target and taking two wickets with his first two balls. While the batter successfully navigated the hat-trick, Walter finished with the impressive figures of 3 for 14. Grammar struggled against the pace bowling of Alex and Sam while our spinners in Matt, Kelley and Ashvin were all very good on the very fast Grammar junior school oval. Matt Wray bowled four impressive overs of off and leg spin including a maiden over and was rewarded when Sam took an excellent catch at mid-off to give him a well-deserved wicket. With the bat Marist was simply outstanding flaying the attack to all parts of the ground. Alex hit the ball extremely hard for his 34 which included 6 fours while Ashvin caught up nicely with some powerful straight hitting to make a nice 28. Kelley and Walter hit four fours a piece in their 28 and 27 not out respectively while Sam was back to his very classy best with an unbeaten 43 from his 20 balls. In their wisdom Cricket ACT changed the rules mid-week for u11 Div 1 meaning 48 penalty runs (4 runs per wicket taken by Marist in the field) were added to our total of 3-185 to allow the boys to register 3-233 in the scorebook. The team has had a great start to the season winning all 8 of our games to date. We have five of the top seven batsman statistically in under 11 s competitions with Sam leading the way for all teams on 260 runs, from Alex who is second on 174 runs and Lucas who is third on 172 runs. Ashvin and Walter are also in the top run getters with 162 and 156 runs respectively. From a bowling perspective we also have three of the top four wicket takers with Alex second overall in the competition on 16 wickets from Sam who is third with 14 wickets and Ashvin fourth with 13 wickets. While we have been fortunate to have a number of strong individual performances, the most impressive aspect of the season has been the improvement of each player. The boys fielding has been top shelf with most catches now being hung onto and the throw being backed up very effectively. While the boys are fortunate to have the cricket knowledge of Aruna and Michael as coaches to teach them the game, it is the responsiveness and desire to learn the nuances of cricket from all seven boys that is excellent to see. Friday Marist Royal, 8/46, defeated Eastlake, 2/42. Both teams were excited for a game of cricket after 3 washed out games in a row. The Marist boys selected to field and soon had an excellent run out courtesy of an athletic Sam Smith with a direct hit. Lucas, Lachlan and Charlie demonstrated a massive improvement in bowling and narrowly missed tacking a few wickets. Tom H was handy behind the stumps, cheered on from the boundary by assistant coach Kirby (injured). The long grass in the outfield was no match for the power of Max's drive down the down the ground running away for 4 runs. Tom A and Charlie finished off the batting with quick singles to secure a second victory for the season. Marist Blue, 5/80, defeated by Marist Navy, 4/90. Marist Blue Batting: Bede Cuddihy 21, Joseph Murray 15no Marist Blue Bowling: Ignatius Murray 2/15, Jack Hatton 1/10, Owen McKenna 1/15. In a battle of the Blue and Blue, we experienced some of the best conditions for spectating so far this season. The Marist Blue team donated one of their finest in Ross Lamb to support his Marist Navy school mates, who were challenged with a depleted stock of players. Marist Blue were also required to dig into their pool of reserves with Ignatius Murray making his debut performance in U11 - impressing all with his poise under pressure and making an excellent contribution to the team. Omkar Gilkam and Owen McKenna opened the batting with a fine partnership to blunt a sharp Marist Navy attack. The next batting pair, the Murray brothers (Joseph and Ignatius), showed outstanding communication, honed over several years of backyard cricket, to take several quick singles and keep the run rate moving. Bede Cuddihy (21) then came to the crease, dispatching the bowling with several fine strokes, including 3 boundaries, and was ably supported by Jack Hatton who accumulated runs and rotated the strike well with the in-form batsman. It was overall a solid batting display by Marist Blue, albeit with some very ambitious calls for runs between the wickets resulting in two runouts. In the field, Owen and Jack took key wickets at crucial stages to restrict the Navy flow of runs. Ignatius and Bede also made a formidable pair with Bede taking two exciting catches off Ignatius fine bowling. Omkar, Bede and Joseph then chimed in with good contributions with the ball to keep Marist Blue in the game right to the end. A feature of the second innings was very some tidy glove work by Bede and Omkar, which applied consistent pressure on the Marist Navy batsmen. On the day, the extras were the difference between the teams with several byes, wides, no balls and over throws by Marist Blue allowing the Navy boys to secure victory. Under 12 Marist Blue, 7/55, defeated Eastlake Demons, 54. Marist Navy, bye. Friday Marist, 4/45, defeated Norths Green, 7/44 (8 December). Batting: Rhys Allan 19, Ryan Furner 11. Bowling: Rhys Allan 1/1, Kiefer Brennan 1/6. Marist travelled to Amaroo to take on Norths Green and with a few players missing had to recruit some fillin players. Norths opened the batting and quickly succumbed to the accurate fielding of Marist with a run out by Andrew Back. One of the fill-in players, Lachlan Bourne claimed the second wicked with a great bowl. This was followed by Kiefer s clean bowl to claim the third wicket. Throughout this time Marist showed great energy in the field always encouraging each other when saving a run. This fielding and the safe wicket keeping hands of Ryan Furner with another throw by Andrew got another run out. A bit later Rhys and Kiefer combined for the fourth run out of the day. Tight bowling by James and Callum restricted Norths to the low scoring. Rhys took another wicket with accurate bowling and then final wicket was a great throw at the stumps by Lachlan with Marist getting an amazing five wickets through run outs. Norths were restricted to a total of 43 runs for the day. Ryan and Kiefer opened the batting and faced two fast opening bowlers from Norths. A few quick wickets by the North bowlers saw Rhys take the crease early and he and Ryan hit a series of four runs each steadying the ship and taking the score to 21. Ryan was out for 11 and Reece batted through to 19 when he and Isaac 4
went on to hit the winning runs. Lachlan and Callum then took to the crease and were able to enjoy their batting after the game had been decided. A big thank you to Callum, Isaac and Lachlan for filling in and helping Marist to finish the calendar year with a win. Thanks boys and see you in 2018. Division 2 Sunday Marist Blue, defeated Ginninderra Siberians. This week we were up against Ginninderra Siberians, we were at similar spots on the ladder and getting closer to the finals both sides were keen for a win. Jack was captain this week and call correctly at the toss and we were in for a bat. It was a long boundary on a wet lush field so runs were going to be tough to come by. But we did get a few good scores, Bede finished up with 24NO, Lachlan with 15 and Ryan 26NO. We ended up with 5/108. We went out for a bowl and did a great job of restricting them, and taking a few early wickets, we were 2/9 after 5 overs, in the end we cleaned them up at 6/31, so in the end a great win. Lachlan and Keishra both grabbed two wickets Just one lesson I learned from the game, we were having a chat with the boys around having a slip, I discussed that we don t get many edges, if so they normally don t carry and if they do they do, we still have to catch it. But the very next ball Keishra grab a great catch from first slip. Nice start to the season boys and Merry Christmas to you all. Marist Navy defeated Grammar Scorchers. Under 13 Marist Blue, 6/67, defeated Queanbeyan Blue 7/61. (9 December Hughes) Batting: Nick Honeyman 21 not out, Callum O Brien 11 not out. Bowling: Jack Catanzariti 2/1, Nick Honeyman 2/8, Kieran McKenna 1/7. Marist went into the weekend s T20 game a player down, so it was important the boys each contributed to ensure a competitive match. While Saturday was a beautiful day the players from both teams has to deal with a wet Hughes oval, with long grass making scoring very difficult. Queanbeyan sent Marist in and Saswat and Callum made slow but steady progress, seeing off the new ball. Callum continued his good batting performance retiring after his 20 balls. Saswat was unlucky to fall to a great catch in the outfield as he tried to increase the run rate. For the next 10 overs the bowlers kept the Marist batsmen quiet. Nick Honeyman and Hugh Strickland batted well but struggled to score freely, with both retiring. From there we dropped a few wickets, but Kieran and Callum worked hard and managed to rotate the strike through aggressive running, which ended up being Kieran s downfall. Nick returned to the crease and through some late hitting, managed to bring Marist s score to a competitive 67 runs. Queanbeyan were aggressive from the outset scoring 14 runs in the first 2 overs. Nick and Hugh (who is a very gifted wicket keeper) then combined to dismiss Queanbeyan s dangerous opening bat and Nick followed up by bowling out their number 3 with his very next ball. From there the wickets started to tumble, mostly through great fielding support. Kieran struck in his first over thanks to a good catch by Callum (who took 2 good catches for the day) and Jack Catanzariti bowled beautifully taking 2 wickets and only conceding 1 run in a great spell. His first wicket came thanks to a spectacular catch by Rafi Ackland at point, who managed to hold on to a hard hit cut shot. In the end the Marist boys managed to bowl out Queanbeyan in the second last over to win by 6 runs, with Rafay Abbas drifting a leg break, beating the batsman and knocking over leg stump. This was a fantastic effort and the boys should go to their Christmas break proud of their narrow victory. 5
Marist Navy, 1/124, defeated WCMCC, 7/60 T20, 9 December. Batting: Jeremy Firth 26* (20 balls), Jaskaran Singh 19* (20 balls). Bowling: Will Seselja 3/12, Jeremy Firth 2/3, Henry York 2/5. As the stand in coach I asked the boys for 3 things have fun, team first and consistent performance for the whole match. They delivered in stunning fashion all 3 aspects. The game was the most consistent and evenly spread with all boys genuinely contributing to the team outcome, so much so, no-one could be singled out. I therefore am compelled to mention all of them. The unsung heroes Angus Wheadon (our fill in this week) and Cameron Bushell did an outstanding job taking on the role of wicket-keeping. I can speak for Cameron that he has not kept during this season and both bowled only 1 over each. Cameron backed up the keeping with opening batting to get us to a solid start and Angus played excellently scoring 15 runs off 17 balls. Oscar David bowled exceptionally well sending down 3 overs for only 7 runs during the important middle overs of the WCMCC innings, ensuring they did not launch a counter attack. Oscar did not get a chance to have a bat, but he did not seem to care, all about the team. Lachy Ashe took a finger-tipper catch to get the innings rolling for the first of Will Seselja s 3 wicket haul and then some inspirational thought process, noticing a WCMCC batsmen didn t like the ball on his legs and suggesting Henry York come around the wicket. Henry did so, spearing one into the batter s middle and leg stump to send him on his way. The bowlers a devastating opening spell by Will Seselja ripped through the WCMCC top order, picking up 3 wickets in his first 3 overs (3/12), the WCMCC commented to me Will was swinging the ball prodigiously. Henry York was unlucky not to get more wickets during his first spell but managed to pick one up whilst keeping the runs down. Henry then came back to bowl at the death to bowl the last over and picked up his second scalp finishing with 2/5. Jeremy Firth came in after the 10 over break, picking up where Will and Henry left off, with 2 more wickets off his two overs (2/3) and leaving the WCMCC innings in tatters. The consistency and support from all the boys was evidence by the score. At the half way mark of the WCMCC was 4/30 and they managed to limp to 7/60 after the 20 overs. The batters - Angus Murray and Cam Bushell - once again set up the innings with an excellent opening partnership Angus severe on anything leg side with 3 boundaries and scoring at close to a run a ball before being caught and dismissed for 15 (16 balls). Cam providing an excellent supporting role, and noteworthy considering he had just finish the keeping stint. Jeremy Firth came in at No3 and immediately set about destroying the WCMCC. Jeremy, supported well by Lachy Ashe by giving him the strike finished with 26 off 20 balls, the big show hitting a 6 off his 20 th ball! Jassy Singh, an outstanding timer of ball strode to the crease and immediately took over where Jeremy left off, hitting the ball to all parts of the ground with no slogs, just terrific cricket shots scoring at a run a ball of 19 off 20 balls and again ably supported by Lachy Ashe. Angus Wheadon and Will Seselja finished off the Marist innings, Angus scoring at fast clip of 15 off 17 balls, ensuring the stand in coaches target of 120 was achieved. The consistency was again on display, the 10 over mark Marist were 1/60 with a final score after the 20 overs of 1/124. It was almost the perfect game... I said almost. As always there are aspects to improve a couple of close run outs due to poor calling and some lucky breaks for some boys where WCMCC dropped catches that would normally be taken better teams won t let us off the hook so easily boys so need to get this right. Finally I must emphasis the team aspects there were a couple of boys who did not get a bat, a couple whom only bowled 1 over, some who were thrust into foreign fielding positions, or a different bowling order, provided a support role with the bat and ball or simply just watching the game to get a wicket or save runs. But they all played for the team outcome. If we can continue to do this, we will more games than we lose. MARIST COLLEGE CANBERRA CRICKET CLUB CODE OF CONDUCT The Club is committed to promoting cricket and the personal development of our players in accordance with the College ethos, the highest standards of sportsmanship and the Laws and Spirit of Cricket. Codes of Behaviour and Courtesy The Marist Sports Policy covers a code of behaviour for: players; coaches; parents; and spectators. In particular, the Code stresses: For Players: For Coaches: Be a good sport Set a good example for your Play for enjoyment Work hard for your team as well as yourself Treat all team mates and opponents as you enjoy being treated yourself Play by the rules Co-operate with team and game officials Control your behaviour on and off the field Learn to value honest effort, skilled performances and improvement. players Encourage and create opportunities to develop individual skills Teach a wide range of team skills Teach your players to be friendly towards officials and opponents Give all interested students a chance to participate in training and games Remove from the field of play any of your players whose behaviour is not acceptable Keep your own knowledge of coaching and the developments of the game up to date. For parents & spectators: Encourage participation by your children Provide a model of appropriate behaviour for the players Be courteous in your communication with players, team officials, game officials, and sport administrators Encourage honest effort, skilled performance, and team loyalty Make any new parents feel welcome on all occasions Do not interfere with the conduct of events Remember children play for enjoyment. Additionally the game of cricket has certain traditions which have been developed over the years. The Preamble to the Laws of Cricket stresses that the game should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Participants, players and officials alike, must conduct themselves, at all times, in accordance with the Laws of Cricket and the ACTCA Junior Council Competition Rules. In the words of Donald Bradman: it is the responsibility of all those that play the game (the custodians) to leave the game in a better state than when they first became involved. Coaches and managers of the younger age teams should reinforce this aspect of the game. No smoking or drinking Coaches and managers should not smoke or drink alcohol at games or during training. Parents are requested not to drink while a match is in progress. Undertaking by Committee and coaches/managers All Club office bearers will abide by the Club s Code of Conduct and work to promote the best interests of the Club and College. Committee Members will sign an undertaking to this effect at the beginning of each season. Coaches and Managers will also sign this undertaking. Parents and supporters All parents and Club supporters are expected to abide by the Club s Code of Conduct and promote the best interests of the Club and College. Parents are entitled to raise with the coach or manager any concerns or issues they may have with the approach or conduct of the team management. This must not be done in front of players. Parents may also raise such concerns with the Committee. Parents must ensure boys are picked up on time, taking into account possible early finishes and wet weather, so that players and coaches/managers are not left waiting for long periods for parents to arrive. Breach of Code of Conduct Any breach of the Code of Conduct by a player, team official, parent or Club supporter should be referred to the Committee through the age group coordinator for consideration and appropriate action. Serious and/or repeated breaches by players may result in offenders being stood down from part or all of a match. While suspended, a player may not play in any match for the Club during the period of the suspension. Serious or repeated breaches by a team official may result in the official being removed from their position with the team. The Club may ask a parent or supporter who breaches the Code to absent themselves from future games. Any person reported to the Committee shall be invited to present their case to the Committee prior to the Committee coming to a decision on the matter. The Committee may appoint a sub-committee to investigate reported breaches of the Code of Conduct. Any findings of the sub-committee shall be provided to the full Committee for appropriate action. If necessary, a special Committee meeting may be called to consider the matter. Any breach of the Code reported to the Committee shall be passed on to the College through the appropriate Junior or Senior Cricket Coordinator. Any sanction applied by the Committee shall be referred to the College through the Cricket Coordinator.
