SEASON OUTLOOK WWW.BAYLORBEARS.COM By Jerry Hill Baylor Director of Sports Journalism Even after losing Johnathan Motley to the NBA, Ishmail Wainright to Baylor football and two transfers, Scott Drew still has a roster filled with grizzled veterans. Coming off their fourth Sweet 16 appearance in the last eight years, the Bears have a trio of fifth-year seniors in point guard Manu Lecomte, 7-footer Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. and 6-9 forward Nuni Omot, plus 6-8 senior forward Terry Maston and junior guards Jake Lindsey and King McClure. You have a lot of experience, and those guys are used to the rigors, the toughness and intensity in which you have to practice and play, said Drew, who enters his 15th season at Baylor with a record of 277-180. That s a good thing, because you can move ahead a little quicker on things. With the new guys, you get the summer to acclimate them and get them used to the weights and what practices are like, just on a Cliff Notes version. The 6-5 Lindsey, a versatile combo guard who averaged 4.7 points and 3.1 assists, said the team has a bunch of guys who either played in big moments, hit big shots in big moments, and have that experience and are ready to carry that over into bigger roles. Replacing Motley certainly won t be easy. Named the Karl Malone Award winner as the nation s top power forward, the 6-10 Motley was a second-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 pick who averaged 17.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. But, at least there are options. It starts with Lual-Acuil, a Big 12 All-Newcomer and All-Defensive Team selection who averaged 9.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and a conferencebest 2.5 blocks per game. He made the summer camp circuit as a counselor and was able to work with other elite college players and work out with NBA guys, Drew said. Your game is able to grow and mature from that experience, Drew said. At the same time, Jo is one of the premier defensive players in the country. The intensity he brought, especially early in the year, was really special. And now, after another year of weights and conditioning, hopefully he ll be able to maintain that intensity and level of play throughout the Big 12. Especially the first time you go through it, it s a grind and it does wear on you. Maston, who has had flashes of brilliance, seems poised to make another jump after averaging 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds. Omot has played only one semester as a junior college transfer, but he averaged 4.0 points and 1.9 rebounds in limited minutes last season and is a solid inside-outside threat. There s also 6-5 redshirt freshman Mark Baby Rico Vital; 6-9, 245-pound freshman Tristan Clark, a four-star prospect from San Antonio Wagner; and 7-0 sophomore center Leonard Allen, who averaged 14.6 points and 8.7 rebounds two years ago at San Diego City College. Allen is the older brother of Jarrett Allen, a first-round draft pick by the Brooklyn Nets after one year at Texas. Being an older sophomore, somebody who is more mature, it s probably going to take him a year to return physically, Drew said of Allen. The natural talent and ability he has, you can t teach. You can t teach 7-foot. There s a lot of positives with Leonard, a lot of similarities with him and Jarrett. I guess the goal would be like the Gasol brothers (Pau and Marc), someday. Not your typical freshman big man, Clark already has a great frame. And because of that, he s got a chance to be successful early on, and I m excited about that, Drew said. Clark was named the Class 6A Player of the Year in the state after averaging 17.9 points and 9.4 rebounds in leading Wagner to a 36-3 record and the state championship game. Defensively, he s got a lot of things to work on, still. He s a freshman, Lecomte said of Clark. But, I really like his game. He s a huge force inside and is really going to help us a lot. He s a 4, a post player, who can also hit the 15-foot shot. He s actually a very good shooter. The backcourt depth was hurt with the transfers of Al Freeman (North Carolina State) and Chuck Mitchell (Trinity Valley), but the Bears have a solid trio of guards returning in Lecomte, Lindsey and McClure. Named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year by the league s coaches, Lecomte was an all-district and third-team All-Big 12 pick who averaged 12.2 points and 3.8 assists after transferring from Miami and sitting out a year. You learn a lot and improve, just playing a year, going through the rigors of the Big 12 and knowing what it s like, and the grind and intensity and toughness it takes, Drew said. After several stints with age-level teams, Lecomte played with the Belgium National Team this summer, averaging five points at the FIBA EuroBasket tournament in Istanbul. It was a great experience to play with real pros, Lecomte said. They already make money and they re like 30 years old, at least. The game is different. It teaches you another part of the game. So, it helped me a lot. McClure started the last 12 games a year ago, averaging 5.0 points per game and shooting 36.4 percent from 3-point range. The 6-4 guard scored all 15 of his points in the second half of a 66-63, come-from-behind win over then-no. 10 Louisville and a career-high-tying 17 points in the 82-78 win over USC in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. King lost 20 pounds, added four inches to his vertical and is shooting the ball like crazy, Lindsey said of McClure. Him and Nuni, they re going to take big jumps in production. Even with a senior point guard in Lecomte, Lindsey will likely take on some of the leadership and do-it-all roles that Wainright held for last year s Sweet 16 team. I m a little more scoring-minded than Ish, Lindsey said, but similar to him, where you just kind of make the plays need to win. If you re not shooting the ball well, that s all right, we have plenty of guys on this team who can score. There s always things that can be brought every day. Redshirt freshman guard Tyson Jolly would give the Bears backcourt a boost, but he s out right now with a medical issue, Drew said. We plan on having him back, but just not exactly certain when. Baylor also has a pair of transfers sitting out this year: 6-9 junior forward Freddie Gillespie from Division III Carleton College and 6-7 sophomore guard Mario Kegler from Mississippi State, who averaged 9.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in starting all 32 games for the Bulldogs last season. After playing the toughest schedule in the country over the last four years, the Bears once again have an extremely difficult non-conference slate, facing Wisconsin, Xavier, Wichita State, Florida and either UCLA or Creighton. Also on tap is a matchup against Randall at the 2,500-seat Abrams Gym on the Ford Hood campus. Throughout college basketball, there s great parity with 351 (NCAA Division I) schools, so you have to be ready each and every night, Drew said. With us playing several teams in the top 25 polls, it definitely gets them focused and ready to go. PRESEASON HONORS MANU LECOMTE Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Bob Cousy Award Watch List JO LUAL-ACUIL JR. Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention NO. 24 IN PRESEASON COACHES POLL Baylor is No. 24 in the USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released Oct. 19. This marks the fifth time Baylor has been ranked in the preseason coaches poll. With the preseason ranking, Baylor has now been ranked at some point in each of the last 11 seasons dating back to 2007-08. The Bears have finished the season ranked in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today coaches poll in each of the last four years and six times in the past eight seasons. Baylor s No. 24 is the fifth-best preseason coaches poll ranking in program history. The Bears were No. 12 in 2011-12, No. 14 in 2010-11, No. 18 in 2012-13 and No. 21 in 2015-16. It also extends the Bears active streak to 18 consecutive polls ranked by the coaches dating back to Nov. 28, 2016. PICKED FIFTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON COACHES POLL Baylor was picked fifth in the 2018 Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bears received 47 points, trailing Kansas, West Virginia, TCU and Texas. This marks the seventh time in the last eight seasons that the Bears have been projected to finish in the top half of the league. The Bears were also picked fifth in each of the previous two seasons, and BU ended last season tied for second place in the Big 12 standings with a 12-6 record. Kansas was chosen as the preseason favorite with nine first-place votes totaling 81 points. They were followed by West Virginia with one first-place vote and 71 points, TCU (64), Texas (49), Baylor (47), Oklahoma (43), Texas Tech (36), Kansas State (27), Iowa State (22) and Oklahoma State (10). 10

PRESEASON NOTES @BAYLORMBB PLAYER DEVELOPMENT FROM UNRANKED TO NBA DRAFT Baylor has had a nation-leading four players selected in the NBA Draft since 2010 who weren t ranked in the ESPN100 out of high school. The only other schools with three such players were Colorado, Marquette, Missouri, New Mexico and Connecticut. Baylor developed Quincy Acy, Ekpe Udoh, Pierre Jackson and Taurean Prince into NBA Draft picks after joining the program as unranked recruits. 34 PRO IN DREW ERA In the Scott Drew era, 34 former players have gone on to play professionally either in the NBA, NFL, NBA G-League or internationally. The Bears have had nine players sign NBA contracts in the last eight seasons Quincy Acy, Pierre Jackson, Cory Jefferson, Perry Jones III, Quincy Miller, Johnathan Motley, Royce O Neale, Taurean Prince and Ekpe Udoh. Five of those players Acy (Brooklyn Nets), Motley (Dallas Mavericks), O Neale (Utah Jazz), Prince (Atlanta Hawks) and Udoh (Utah Jazz) entered the 2017-18 NBA season under contract. DREW ENTERING 15TH SEASON AT BAYLOR Head coach Scott Drew enters his 15th season at Baylor in 2017-18. He holds a 297-191 career record over 15 years as a Division I coach, including a 277-180 mark at BU. Drew s teams have combined to post a 152-64 record over the last six seasons, winning at least 21 games in every year and averaging 25.3 wins per season. Drew joins Kansas Bill Self as the longest-tenured Big 12 coaches. DREW AMONG NATION S ELITE Head coach Scott Drew is the youngest of nine coaches nationally to take his current program to four Sweet 16 appearances since 2010. Drew (46) is joined by Xavier s Chris Mack (47), Arizona s Sean Miller (48), Kansas Bill Self (54), Kentucky s John Calipari (58), Michigan State s Tom Izzo (62), North Carolina s Roy Williams (67), Duke s Mike Krzyzewski (70) and Syracuse s Jim Boeheim (72). In those four appearances, Baylor was twice eliminated by the eventual national champions (Duke in 2010, Kentucky in 2012) and twice by a national semifinalist (Wisconsin in 2014, South Carolina in 2017). Baylor is one of 13 teams to make four Sweet 16 appearances since 2010. EIGHTEEN WINS VS. RANKED TEAMS IN LAST THREE SEASONS Baylor has gone 18-17 against ranked teams since the start of the 2014-15 season. The Bears set a school record with seven wins against ranked teams in 2014-15, recorded five wins over ranked teams in 2015-16 and went 6-3 against ranked opponents last season, including four victories over top-10 ranked teams. In 2016-17, Baylor recorded wins over No. 4 Oregon, No. 7 Xavier, No. 10 Louisville, No. 10 West Virginia, No. 24 Michigan State and No. 25 Kansas State. BU is 37-57 against ranked teams since 2007-08 after going 0-27 in Drew s first four rebuilding seasons. Baylor has won multiple games vs. AP Top 25 teams in each of the last 10 seasons, including four straight seasons with at least five wins over ranked teams. FOUR CONSECUTIVE NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES Baylor is on a school-record streak of four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to earning at-large bids in each of the last four seasons, BU had never been to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. The Bears are one of eight teams nationally to earn a top-six seed in each of the last four NCAA Tournaments. BU joins Arizona, Duke, Iowa State, Kansas, North Carolina, Villanova and Virginia as the only teams to make that claim. Baylor was a No. 6 seed in 2014, a No. 3 seed in 2015 and a No. 5 seed in 2016 and a No. 3 seed in 2017. BEST IN TEXAS Baylor is 49-9 against in-state opponents since the start of the 2011-12 season, and the Bears have advanced deeper into postseason play than any of Texas 21 Division I team in five of the last six seasons. BU is a combined 63-13 against Lone Star State teams over the last eight seasons after going 10-27 against in-state teams in Scott Drew s first six seasons at Baylor (7-1 in 2016-17, 9-3 in 2015-16, 10-1 in 2014-15, 6-3 in 2013-14, 7-1 in 2012-13, 10-0 in 2011-12, 5-3 in 2010-11 and 9-1 in 2009-10). Six of the 13 NBA Draft picks from Texas colleges since 2012 have come from Baylor. North Texas, Houston, Texas and Texas A&M have each had one player selected in the last six NBA Drafts, while SMU has had two selections and the 15 remaining DI Texas teams have had none. RANKED IN EACH OF LAST 11 SEASONS With its preseason No. 24 ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll, Baylor has been ranked at some point in each of the last 11 seasons. The Bears were one of 12 teams to be ranked in all 10 seasons from 2007-08 through 2016-17, joining Connecticut, Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Syracuse and Wisconsin. Prior to earning its first ranking of the Scott Drew era on Jan. 21, 2008, Baylor had played only two games as a ranked team in program history. BU has played 198 games as a ranked team in 14 seasons under Drew. 152 WINS IN LAST SIX SEASONS Baylor has averaged more than 25 wins per season over the last six years second-most in the Big 12 in that span. Baylor s 152-64 record since 2011-12 trails only Kansas (179-42) among Big 12 teams. Iowa State (147-63) is 3rd, West Virginia (128-77) is 4th, Oklahoma (123-77) is 5th, Kansas State (122-79) is 6th, Texas (111-92) is 7th, Oklahoma State (110-87) is 8th, TCU (92-109) is 9th and Texas Tech (83-107) is 10th. SIX STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASONS Baylor has won 20+ games in each of the last six seasons and in nine of the last 10 years. The Bears had just three 20-win seasons in the program s first 101 years (1907-2007). Baylor has topped 22 wins in each of the past six seasons and is averaging 25.3 wins per season in that span. BU is one of only 16 programs to record at least 22 wins in every season since 2012, joining Arizona, BYU, Cincinnati, Duke, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisville, New Mexico State, North Carolina, Oregon, VCU, Virginia, Wichita State and Wisconsin. CONSISTENTLY AMONG NATION S BEST OFFENSES Baylor s offense has consistently ranked among the nation s best over the last 10 seasons under Scott Drew. The Bears have finished nine of the past 10 seasons among the top 25 nationally in KenPom s adjusted offensive efficiency, joining Duke as the only programs to make that claim. The Bears finished No. 23 in 2016-17, No. 13 in 2015-16, No. 18 in 2014-15, No. 9 in 2013-14, No. 14 in 2012-13, No. 8 in 2011-12, No. 102 in 2010-11, No. 3 in 2009-10, No. 11 in 2008-09 and No. 11 in 2007-08. SIX NBA DRAFT PICKS IN LAST SIX SEASONS Baylor s six NBA Draft picks over the last six years are the nation s 10th-most, trailing only Kentucky, Duke, Syracuse, Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA, Arizona, Louisville and Michigan. A program-record three Baylor players were selected in the 2012 NBA Draft Perry Jones III (28th pick; Oklahoma City Thunder), Quincy Acy (37th pick; Toronto Raptors) and Quincy Miller (38th pick; Denver Nuggets). Pierre Jackson (42nd pick, Philadelphia 76ers; traded to New Orleans Pelicans) was chosen in the 2013 draft, Cory Jefferson (60th pick; San Antonio Spurs; traded to Brooklyn Nets) was selected in 2014 and Taurean Prince (12th pick; Utah Jazz; traded to Atlanta Hawks) was chosen in 2016.
