Thursday June 21 Miami Heat v Oklahoma City Thunder Venue: American Airlines Arena Handicap: Heat +3.5, Under/Over 194.5 Heat lead series 3-1 The Miami Heat are just one game away from an NBA championship as they host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night in game 6 In game 5, OKC came with the mindset that they were going to double team Lebron James and force the rest of the Heat to beat them. Well the Heat did just that. Dwayne Wade and Mario Chalmers were solid and finished with 25 points each. OKC got a huge game from Westbrook who finished with 43 points and Kevin Durant had had 28 points, however key reserve James Harden had just 8 points on another poor 2-10 shooting on the night. Miami are 5-1 overall in their last 6 games, and 4-2 overall in their last 6 against the Thunder in Miami. The Thunder have just 1 win in their last 5 road games. I expect a bigger game from Durant on Thursday, but Harden has been absent from these finals thus far and I don t see that changing much on Thursday. I expect another tight game, but in the end I can see LeBron and company bringing the championship home to Miami. FOOTBALL QUICK PICKS WEEKEND PREDICTIONS Thursday June 21 Euro 2012 Quarter-Finals Czech Republic v Portugal venue: National Stadium, Poland Most pundits expected Russia to top Group A but the Czech Republic had other ideas. They topped the group with 2 wins and 1 loss, that loss coming in their opening match against those same Russians. Interestingly, the Czechs advanced from the group with a negative goal difference, mainly due to the 4-1 defeat to the Russians in that first match. Czech skipper Tomas Rosicky is doubtful for the quarter-final with an achilles injury after missing the last group match against Poland. Portugal emerged from the Group of Death ahead of Denmark and the disappointing Dutch, and they recovered well from their opening defeat to the Germans. Cristiano Ronaldo, much criticized for his lack of scoring in big competitions, certainly came up big in their last group fixture scoring twice. The teams have met twice before, in the 1996 and 2008 EURO tournaments, with the Czechs winning 1-0 in 96 (quarter-final) and Portugal winning 3-1 in 08 (group stage). I think the Portuguese are hitting all the right notes at the moment and should secure the victory. Prediction: Czech Rep 1 Portugal - 2 Friday June 22 Germany v Greece venue: PGE Arena, Poland Germany, the heavy pre tournament favourites ran through the Group of Death with a 100% win record and will enter their quarter-final against Greece again as the heavy favourite, especially considering that Greece will be without their best player Giorgios Karagounis who is suspended. Greece have been good defensively and this gives them an outside chance against the Germans, who have also been very solid at the back, conceding just two goals during the group stage. Germany haven t played to their full potential so far in this competition but they have still managed to win all their matches, so this bodes well for the knockout round. Germany and Greece have met twice before, back in 2000-01 World Cup qualifying, with Germany winning both meetings. I look for the Germans to win again and book a spot in the last four. Prediction: Germany - 2 Greece - 0 Saturday June 23 Spain v France venue: Donbass Arena, Ukraine Spain got a bit of a scare in their final group fixture against Croatia, before eventually securing a 1-0 victory and locking up top spot in Group C. They now face a French side which ended group play in disappointing fashion, losing 2-0 to Sweden (who were already eliminated from quarter-final contention), to finish second in Group D behind England. France had been riding a 23 match unbeaten run prior to that defeat to the Swedes, but that loss may have been just a slight bump in the road for Les Bleus. Spain were the top scoring side in the group stage of EURO 2012 with 6 goals and although they have not looked their best, are still among the top favourites to lift the crown. Spain have won the last two meetings against France without conceding a goal (1-0 and 2-0 in friendly meetings in February 2008 and March 2010), while France defeated Spain it their meeting prior to those friendlies, at the 2006 FIFA World Cup round of 16 stage. This will be a tightly contested match but I give Spain the edge. Prediction: Spain 1 France - 0 Sunday June 24 England v Italy venue: Kiev Olympic Stadium, Ukraine England got the benefit of a missed goal-line call by the referees in their 1-0 win over Ukraine, and also got some help from Sweden who shocked France 2-0 to top Group D and avoid a quarter-final match-up with Spain. The English looked shaky at times during the group stage, but overall were fairly solid in defense and with Wayne Rooney back in the mix, they could be a team to reckon with in the knockout phase. Italy s 2-0 win over Ireland in their last group match was their only win of the group phase, but they have been solid defensively. Italy has won the last two meetings with England, although the teams haven t met since 2002. Italy has also lost just once in their last nine meetings with the English dating back to 1980. This quarter-final match-up should be a low scoring affair which may even go into extra time, at which point it will be anybody s match. I do however think the Italians have the edge in talent and quality and should eventually get the better of the English. 2012 WIMBLEDON URNAMENT PREVIEW MEN The favourite to win the third grand slam of the year is the world no. 1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic. Djokovic made the final of the French Open this year but lost to Rafael Nadal. Djokovic will be more at home on the grass courts than the clay. He clearly sets the standard here, and it will take some effort for anyone to beat him, as he defends his title. Next in the betting is Nadal, the clay court king, but so far, unable to match Djokovic on other surfaces, having lost the last four times he has played him on a surface other than clay. Still, Nadal is a double Wimbledon champion (2008, 2010), so it would be silly to dismiss his chances. Roger Federer used to be the undisputed king of grass, but he has failed to make it past the quarter finals in the last two tournaments, losing to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych the last two times out. The Swiss reached the semi-final at Roland Garros, but was brushed aside by Djokovic in straight sets, having never looked his best during the tournament. He hunting his seventh Wimbledon title and can t be overlooked. The home crowd s hopes will rest with Andy Murray, who is currently the world no. 4. Murray made the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, but lost his first match at Queen s, a tournament he has won in two of the last three years. Murray has made the semi-final at Wimbledon the past two years and showed that he can mix it with the best by pushing Djokovic all the way in the semi-final of the Australian Open earlier in the year. Murray could be a dark horse. This tournament, as with most grand slams, is extremely likely to be won by one of the top two in the betting. Out of the top four in the betting, Djokovic seems by far the most likely winner, but Federer or Nadal could seriously challenge for the title. Bettors on Murray generally end up disappointed and this tournament looks to be no different. Winner s Prediction: Novak Djokovic WOMEN Maria Sharapova s victory over Sara Errani in the final of the French Open marked her return to the top of the women s rankings, and finally brought her the illusive career grand slam. Sharapova is only the ninth female player in history to win all four Grand Slams, placing her in the company of such greats as Steffi Graf, Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova. Sharapova won Wimbledon back in 2004, and although she has not regained the title since then she is always a threat at the All England Club. The Russian starts the upcoming tournament as the favourite to lift the trophy once again. Second favourite to win the title is four-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams. Serena started the French Open this year as the heavy favourite to win the title, but crashed out in the first round to Virgine Razzano of France. Williams has 13 grand slam singles titles to her name, and before this year s Roland Garros she had never lost in the first round of a slam. Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic won Wimbledon last year, defeating Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the final. The defending champion met Sharapova once again in the semifinals of this year s Australian Open, but lost to the Russian in three sets. Kvitova is on offer to retain her Wimbledon crown and could be worth a wager. World Number 2 Victoria Azarenka will also be a formidable force at Wimbledon this year. Azarenka reached the semi finals last year, and secured her first Grand Slam title at this year s Australian Open with an emphatic 6-3, 6-0 win against Maria Sharapova. In winning this title she became the first Belarusian player ever to win a Grand Slam title. Venus Williams is always a threat on the grass courts of Wimbledon, where her powerful attacking style has helped her to five Wimbledon singles titles. Venus has not won in London since 2008, but it would be foolish to write her off at any stage, and the American looks like decent value this year. FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX OF EUROPE (VALENCIA, SPAIN) The big question ahead of the European Grand Prix in Valencia on Sunday June 24 is whether the remarkable start to the season which has seen seven different winners in the first seven races can continue. The odds would seem against it with such an impressive array of drivers all looking for their second win. But there are still contenders who could make it eight out of eight. For a start, the Lotus pair of Kimi Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean has been looking good, as has Sergio Perez in the Sauber. And surely Mercedes Michael Schumacher s bad run of luck cannot continue. And with overtaking so hard at Valencia, a good qualifying session by the likes of Ferrari s Felipe Massa, Williams Bruno Senna or Sauber s Kamui Kobayashi could see them in contention to be the eighth winner in eight races. McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton was the last to take the chequered flag when he won in Canada ahead of Grosjean and Perez. This took him to the top of the drivers championship but McLaren are still only second behind Red Bull in the constructors championship. Most of the blame for this has to lie on the shoulders of his team mate Jenson Button, who has done little on the track this season after winning the opening race in Australia. He finished 16th in Canada. In contrast, both Red Bull drivers have been having solid seasons so far with Sebastian Vettel winning in Bahrain and Mark Webber in Monaco. They currently lie third and fourth in the championship behind Ferrari s Fernando Alonso, who won in Malaysia. Nico Rosberg managed sixth in Canada and lies fifth in the table, helped of course by his first ever victory when he won in China. Williams driver Pastor Maldonado has not built on his victory in Spain, failing to finish in Monaco and only managing 13th in Canada. Valencia grand prix circuit The Valencia street circuit has few opportunities for overtaking, so qualifying is important. The circuit is tough on brakes and the narrow confines of the track mean it can become pretty hot for the cars. Driver concentration is more important here than anywhere with the mass of corners.
