RADS Newsletter, August/September 2011 Richmond Area Daylily Society President s Message I hope everyone has enjoyed their daylily blooming season this year as much as I have. This is what it s all about! We ve got some new activities coming up over the next few years. Please see where you can help. We always need volunteers to make everything work. Happy Gardening, Paulette Miller - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Garden Judges For those of you who are garden judges, it s time for you to send in your ballot. If you have misplaced your ballot, just download a copy from the AHS website. This ballot is very important as the votes affect the entire AHS Awards and Honors program. Make sure you meet the September 1 deadline. While you are at it, go ahead and add all your garden visits to your 5-year log. Keeping it up-to-date is so much easier than waiting until your 5-year renewal to fill it out. Richmond Flower Show Congratulations to for Best In Show with Best Unusual Form NATHAN SOMMERS. He also had Best Miniature. Scott attributes his success this year to the skills he learned at the grooming clinic. Way to go Scott! His address is 8306 Cadys Mill Road, Hanover, VA. Make sure you label the plants that you bring. This is a good way to share all those special perennials you have in your garden. October 8 th Annual Dinner Banquet Make sure you save this date to attend our annual banquet. Our guest speaker is Paul Owen from Slightly Different Nursery in North Carolina. October 22-23 Lilyhemmer Fall Festival This is the 17 th daylily fall festival for Region 3. The location is Camp Hill, near Harrisburg, PA. Official events are scheduled noon to noon, October 22 & 23, 2011. Come earlier on Friday and enjoy some informal preview activities. Our theme this year is the Viking Ship. Lilyhemmer was named in 1994 when the Olympics were held in Lillehemmer, Norway -- home of the Vikings. Planned speakers include J.D. Stadler (NC hybridizer), Linda Michaels (NY hybridizer), Mike and Sandy Holmes (OH hybridizers), Jamie Gossard (conversion demo), Kevin Walek (Hosta), and Ted Petit (FL hybridizer). So join us this October for good fellowship, food, auctions, raffles, and some Viking fun. [SPECIAL NOTE: $500 raffle for everyone wearing a Viking helmet, hat, costume, sword, or something creative.] Rooms are about $93 plus tax, if reserved prior to September 21, 2011. Radisson Penn Harris Hotel & Convention Center (717) 763-7117. Before 9/21, registration Fee $79 (youth $49) http://lilyhemmer.org/registration.htm RADS August/September 2011 Newsletter Page 2 of 5

RADS Fall Plant Sale Again, we are counting on our members to donate daylily plants for our fall plant sale at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Look your garden over and decide what you will dig. Give Michael Miller or Wayne Bryant a call and let them know what you will be bringing so they can get plant picture and information together. The sale is September 16-17, so dig as closely to that date as possible so the plants are fresh. Our plant sales are our primary source of revenue and critical to our overall operations and activities. Nominating Committee Thanks to all those who agreed to serve on the nominating committee this year. You may be receiving a call from Lee Payne (chair), Leo Rutledge, or Christina Lawrence and be asked to serve a position. Please consider supporting this active club in a new way. The committee will provide a recommended slate of officers that will be printed in the October newsletter. Voting for officers will be held at the November meeting. 2012 AHS National Convention Next summer, the national convention will be held in Columbus, Ohio. The Metropolitan Columbus Daylily Society invites you to Discover Columbus Passion for Daylilies at the 2012 Convention. They will have eight spectacular daylily tour gardens. As with all the national conventions, there is a registration limit, so make sure you register early for the July 11-15 event. Bus Trip to National RADS, jointly with other clubs, is working on putting together a bus trip for the national convention next summer. We will be using Holiday Tours and they are already putting routes together. As soon as we have more information from the convention organizers, we will put together a total cost for the bus, hotel, and all. Limited seating, so sign up early. Daylily Care Although most of the daylilies have stopped blooming, they still need regular care. Water them into the fall. Remove unsightly dead scapes. If you want to put in a new bed next year, go ahead and prepare the area before winter. Clear the area and condition the soil. 2012 Regional Next year, the Blue Ridge Area Daylily Society will host the regional meeting. Please reserve the dates Friday, June 29 through Sunday July 1, 2012. Online registration will be available later in August. They ve got some beautiful gardens in this area, and it s pretty close to us. It should make for a great trip across state, stopping at various open gardens along the way. 2014 Regional At the last RADS meeting, we voted to host the regional meeting for 2014. That is only 3 years away! A lot of work goes into hosting a regional. Some jobs are big and will require time and expertise. Many jobs are small but greatly needed. We will be counting on many of you to fill these needs and make this regional a great success. Christmas Party We still need a volunteer to host a RADS Christmas party this year. This is a great time to get together in fellowship with our fellow daylily enthusiasts. Please call Paulette if you are willing to host this event. 2011 Richmond Flower Show Even though we had our show earlier in the bloom season this year, we had great participation. Congratulations to all those winning ribbons of any type. You are all winners. Enjoy the pictures on the following pages of those daylilies winning best in class in the Horticulture on- and off-scape. Newsletter Format: To keep costs down, email recipients will receive a text version and the color version with pictures will be posted on the RADS website and can be easily viewed and/or downloaded if you choose.
