Wisconsin earned a No. 5 seed in the West Region of the 2013 NCAA Tournament at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. The Badgers lost to No. 12 seed Ole Miss, 57-46, in the 2nd round, just the second opening game loss in the last 12 trips to the NCAA tournament. UW has qualifi ed for the NCAA tournament in each of Bo Ryan s 12 seasons in Madison, posting a 16-12 record over that span. The Badgers made their 15th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. UW is one of just five schools with an active NCAA tournament streak of at least 15 years, joining: Kansas (24), Duke (18), Michigan State (16) and Gonzaga (15). UW s 15-consecutive NCAA tournament appearances is the third-longest streak in Big Ten history. BO RYAN - COACH OF THE YEAR Bo Ryan was named consensus 2013 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Ryan who also won Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2002 and 2003 trails only Gene Keady of Purdue (7) and Bob Knight of Indiana (5) for the most conference coach of the year awards. UW was universally picked to finish between 5th and 8th in the Big Ten this year and many of those projections were before the Badgers lost starting PG Josh Gasser before the season began. Ryan guided the Badgers to their 12th-straight top-4 fi nish in the Big Ten and fourth-straight season with at least 12 conference wins. After a 9-4 non-conference season, Bo Ryan s Badgers fi nished among the Big Ten s top 4 and ended the season just 2 games out of the conference title. In his career, Ryan has now won conference Coach of the Year honors 9 times, including 6 WIAC honors as the head coach at UW-Platteville. UW S RARE EARLY EXIT FROM NCAAS The Badgers lost an opening-round game for just the 2nd time in 12 seasons under Bo Ryan, falling to No. 12 seed Ole Miss, 57-46 in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in Kansas City. UW led 25-22 at the half, but shot just 22% in the second half (3-for-17, 16.6% from 3-point range). Freshman Sam Dekker was the only Badger in double fi gures with 14 points. Senior Jared Berggren chipped in 8 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks in his fi nal collegiate game. WISCONSIN S BIG TEN TOURNEY RUN The Badgers played 3 top-10 teams in 3 days at the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, coming up just short of winning the team s 3rd conference tournament title. Wisconsin beat No. 6 Michigan, 68-59, in the quarterfinals. Then knocked off top-seeded and 3rd-ranked Indiana, 68-56, in the semifinals before losing, 50-43, to No. 2 seed Ohio State in the championship game. The Badgers advanced to the championship game for the first time since winning the title in 2008. Overall, UW made its fifth appearance in the Big Ten tournament championship. After scoring just 17 points in the first half of the opener against Michigan, UW scored a seasonhigh 51 points in the second half - it s highestscoring half vs. a Big Ten opponent since 2004. Wisconsin shot just 17.2% in the first half, but blistered the nets to the tune of 60.7% (66.7% from 3-point range) in the second half. The Badgers held their 3 opponents to a collective 9-for-46 from 3-point range (19.6%). Ohio St. shot just 1-for-16 from deep in the championship. UW tallied 18 blocks and 22 steals over the three-day span. Senior Ryan Evans and sophomore Traevon Jackson were named to the All-Tournament team. Evans averaged team highs with 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He also blocked 4 shots in 3 games. Jackson was 2nd on the Badgers averaging 11.0 points, while dishing 3.0 assists per game. Junior Ben Brust also averaged double figures for the tournament, scoring 10.7 points per game. Brust went 6-for-14 (42.9%) from 3-point range. WRECKING THE RANKED With wins over No. 6 Michigan and No. 3 Indiana in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament, UW went 7-6 against teams in the AP Top 25 this season, with all 7 wins coming vs. teams ranked in the top 15. UW s 7 victories against teams ranked in the top 15 is the most in the country, tied with Indiana. UW s 7 top-25 wins is the 2nd-highest mark in school history, trailing UW s 8 wins over ranked teams in 2000. The Badgers also own a school-record four top-10 victories this season. UW is the only team in the country to have played 13 games against AP Top-15 opponents. No other team in Division 1 has even faced double-digit top-15 foes (Ohio State next highest with 9). Over the last 3 years, the Badgers are 22-17 (.564) overall against top-25 teams. The Badgers have 3 wins vs. Top 10 teams away from home this season (at No. 2 Indiana and vs. No. 6 Michigan and No. 3 Indiana at the Big Ten Tournament), which is tied with Indiana for the most of any team in the country. Wisconsin s 64-59 win at No. 2 Indiana on Jan. 15 represented the school s fi rst road win over a team ranked in the top 3 of the AP poll. BADGERS TRIO EARN BIG TEN HONORS In addition to Bo Ryan taking home Big Ten Coach of the Year accolades, three Wisconsin players were honored by the conference. Senior Jared Berggren was named consensus second-team All-Big Ten. He also took home All-Defensive Team honors and earned Wisconsin s Sportsmanship Award. UW has had a member of the All-Defensive Team in 6 of the last 7 years: Michael Flowers (2007, 2008), Joe Krabbenhoft (2008), Trévon Hughes (2010), Jordan Taylor (2011) and Josh Gasser (2012). Junior Ben Brust earned consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten. Sam Dekker took home All-Freshman Team recognition and honorable mention All-Big Ten. With a career record of 144-60 (.706), Bo Ryan owns the 2nd-best winning pct. in Big Ten history. NEW LEVELS OF WINNING The Badgers won 23 games in 2012-13, the 9thhighest single-season win total in school history. In regular season games played on Feb. 1 or later, Ryan s teams have gone 80-28 (.741) over his 12 seasons. That includes a mark of 7-3 this year. Over the last 5 years, Wisconsin has gone 34-12 (.739) in regular-season games in February and March, the top mark in the Big Ten. Last 5 Seasons, Reg. Purdue 29-18.617 ROAD WARRIORS Under Bo Ryan, Wisconsin is renowned for its incredible home record, but the Badgers have also enjoyed remarkable success on the road. Since Bo Ryan was hired in 2001, Wisconsin has been the Big Ten s best road team, owning the most true road wins (67) and best road win percentage (.504) in the conference. In fact, in that era Wisconsin is the only Big Ten team with a road record of.500 or better. Indiana 10-8.556 Michigan State 10-8.556 A FINISH THAT LASTS One of the keys to Wisconsin s success is its remarkable ability to fi nish games. Dating back to February of 2011, the Badgers have won 56 of their last 57 games when leading or tied with 5:00 to go. That includes a mark of 21-1 this season with the only loss coming at Minnesota in which UW led 49-43 with 5:00 remaining.

WHAT S TRENDING This season there have been some dramatic trends that seem to infl uence Wisconsin s games. UW went 18-0 when shooting a better FG% than its opponent and 5-12 when the opponent shoots the same or better. The Badgers have won 90 of their last 91 games when owning the better FG percentage, including 21 consecutive such wins. UW s only loss since 2009 when shooting a higher FG% was a 67-66 loss at Iowa (2/23/12). UW is 13-0 when shooting at least 45.0% from the fi eld and 10-12 when not reaching that mark. Wisconsin s last loss when shooting 45.0% or better was a 67-66 loss at Iowa (2/23/12). UW is 22-6 when holding foes below 45.0% shooting & 1-6 when opponents are over 45.0%. UW is 16-2 when owning the rebound edge and 7-10 when its opponent grabs the same or more rebounds. The Badgers out-rebounded Iowa 34-33 in a losing effort as well as Minnesota 43-36. UW had won 12 straight when having an advantage on the glass prior to Iowa (1/19/13). UW is 18-5 when holding opponents below 60 points and 5-7 when foes reach 60. BUZZER-BEATING BADGERS Wisconsin has had 20 buzzer-beaters (last second or as time ran out) in school history, and 2 happened this season. Ben Brust hit a half-court shot as time expired to force overtime against Michigan (2/9). Trailing by 3 with 2.4 seconds left, Brust caught the ball near mid-court, took one dribble to gather himself before making the shot from near the sideline. UW would go on to win, 65-62, in overtime. Brust s shot was the 3rd buzzer-beater in school history that forced overtime and led to a win. One month later, sophomore Traevon Jackson turned the trick in the Badgers regular-season fi nale at Penn State. With the game tied and 3.3 seconds remaining, Jackson dribbled the length of the court and made a 25-foot 3-pointer as time expired for a 63-60 win. BLOCK PARTY Led by a school-record 73 blocks from senior Jared Berggren, the Badgers equaled a team record with 153 blocks on the season. The 153 swats were the most in school history since the 1991-92 team posted the same number. Berggren finished 2nd on the Badgers and 24th in the Big Ten averaging 11.0 points per game. He was 6th in the conference at 6.9 rebounds per game. He was one of just 4 players (joining IU s Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo and NU s Brandon Ubel) to rank among the Big Ten s top 25 scorers & top 10 rebounders. Berggren also led the Big Ten averaging 2.1 blocks per game and became Wisconsin s all-time blocks leader, owning 144 for his career. Berggren had 3 double-doubles in Big Ten play: 16 points, a career-high 14 rebounds (8 offensive) and a career-best 7 blocks vs. Iowa (2/6). 15 points and 12 rebounds vs. Illinois (1/12). 12 points and 10 rebounds at Penn St. (3/10). NATION S BEST POST DEFENDER? UW s all-time blocks leader, Berggren received the defensive praise he deserved in 2012-13. ESPN analyst Dan Dakich named Berggren his co-defensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten alongside Indiana s Victor Oladipo. The Sporting News Mike DeCourcy tweeted: Jared Berggren is the best returning defensive big man in college basketball. Period. Luke Winn of Sports Illustrated ranked Berggren 10th on his preseason list of the nation s top impact defenders. ESPN s Jay Bilas said, Berggren is an outstanding shot blocker and a deceptive athlete. He s one of the better defenders in the country. 3-POINT SHARP-SHOOTERS UW had 7 different players who have made at least 10 3-pointers this season, including 6 with 20 or more. Northwestern was the only other team in the Big Ten to have 6 different players connect on 20+ triples. Individually, Sam Dekker, George Marshall and Ben Brust finished ranked among the Big Ten s top 3-point shooters. Dekker ranked 7th in the Big Ten connecting on 39.1% (50-128) from long range. He made at least 1 triple in all but 5 games. Brust was 8th in the Big Ten, shooting 38.9% from deep (79-for-203). Brust s 79 3-pointers set a new UW single-season record, surpassing Sean Mason s 78 in 1999. Brust averaged 2.3 3-pointers per game, the 5th-highest average in the conference. He had hit a 3-pointer in 22 consecutive games before going 0-for-2 against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. In fact, Brust had hit multiple treys in 15 straight games. Marshall finished 12th in the conference shooting 36.8% (35-95) from long range. As a team, UW averaged 7.4 treys per game, the 4th-highest mark in the Big Ten. The Badgers scored 34.1% of their points from behind the 3-point arc. That was the highest mark in the conference. This year s team is scoring at a better rate than last year s team thanks to a few significant factors: Balance: UW had 8 players capable of leading the team in scoring 3-pt shooting: UW had 7 players with at least 14 made triples and 3 of the Big Ten s top 12 shooters. Low turnovers: UW ranked 4th in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (9.8 avg.). Offensive rebounding: UW averaged 11.6 offensive rebounds per game (9.7 last season). According to STATS, Inc., the Badgers averaged 1.04 points per possession this season. That figure is 6th in the Big Ten. UW has averaged over 1.0 offensive points per possession in each of Bo Ryan s fi rst 11 seasons. 2013 1.04 2012 1.12 2011 1.16 2010 1.10 2009 1.03 2008 1.06 2007 1.10 2006 1.05 2005 1.06 2004 1.09 2003 1.09 2002 1.01 The Badgers averaged 65.0 points per game, having reached 80 points 5 times and topped 70 points in 14 games. A year ago, UW averaged 64.0 ppg and topped 70 just 9 times. BALANCED BADGERS A year ago Jordan Taylor led Wisconsin in scoring in over half of the team s games. This season, 8 different Badgers led the team in scoring. During Big Ten play alone, 7 different players led the Badgers in scoring - Jared Berggren, Ryan Evans, George Marshall, Mike Bruesewitz, Sam Dekker, Traevon Jackson and Ben Brust. Wisconsin has seen 8 different players score in double figures in a game this season, and 7 different players have reached at least 15 points in a game. CONTROL FREAKS Over the last 3 seasons, no one in the country has taken care of the ball better than Wisconsin... and it s not even close. For the fourth-straight season, Wisconsin fi nished among the nation s top four in fewest turnovers per game. Wisconsin finished the 2012-13 season 4th in NCAA Div. The team pulled in 1,287 rebounds and 406 offensive boards. Both marks ranked 2nd on the school's all-time single-season list. Wisconsin ranked 6th in the Big Ten averaging 11.5 offensive rebounds per game this season after averaging 9.7 offensive rpg last season. By comparison, UW s opponents averaged just 9.3 offensive rebounds per game, which was 2nd behind Penn State (8.9) for the Big Ten s best mark. The Badgers led the Big Ten in defensive rebounding percentage, grabbing 73.1% of possible defensive board chances. SHACKLING NATION S TOP OFFENSES Wisconsin once again boasts one of the nation s top defenses, but what the Badgers have done against the Big Ten s top offenses is what might separate this unit from previous versions. Wisconsin has played four games against Indiana and Michigan, the two highest-scoring teams in the Big Ten. UW went 4-0 in those games. A four-year varsity player for the Skippers, Dearring earned All-Lake Conference honors last season as a junior after averaging 15 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. NIGEL HAYES 6-7, 230, F, Toledo, Ohio (Whitmer HS) A three-time MVP for Whitmer High School in Toledo, Nigel Hayes recently surpassed 1,000 career points in December and is averaging 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Hayes nearly averaged a double-double last season (14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds), while becoming the school s alltime leader in blocked shots. He earned first-team Northwest District selection and second-team allstate honoree and was named to the 2012 OHSSA Division I State Tournament Team. JORDAN HILL 6-3, 175, G, Pasadena, Calif. (Exeter Academy, N.H.) KOHL CENTER AMONG TOUGHEST Even with 3 home losses this season, Wisconsin has only lost a TOTAL of 18 home games in the Bo Ryan era. In 12 seasons under Ryan, the Badgers are an incredible 181-18 (.910) at the Kohl Center. UW s.910 winning percentage since 2001-02 is good for 4th in the nation. Only Duke, Kansas and Gonzaga have better home records in that span (pg 12). Since 2001-02, the Badgers own the conference s best home record for Big Ten games with a mark of 91-11 (.892). Michigan State is 2nd at 85-15 (.850). OSU is 3rd at 78-22 (.780). [thru 3/4/13] Three of UW s 5 longest home win streaks have come under Bo Ryan, including the school-record 38 straight from 12/7/2002 to 1/25/2005. Over the last 12 years, 135 of the Badgers 181 home wins have come by at least 10 points (74.6%). WELL-ROUNDED BRUST Known primarly as a long-range gunner the season before in a 6th-man role, junior Ben Brust evolved into one of the Badgers most all-around players in 2012-13. Brust finished all over the Badgers leaderboard: Points per game 1st 11.1 Reb. per game 4th 5.1 Assists 2nd 79 Steals 2nd 34 Charges drawn 2nd 10 Assist-to-TO ratio 1st 2.0 Double-doubles 1st 5 Minutes per game 1st 34.3 Brust, who ranks 21st in the Big Ten in scoring, was in double figures in 11 of the last 14 games. He scored 20 or more 3 times this season and has done it 5 times in his career. Brust posted surprising rebounding numbers for his size. The 6-foot-1 guard ranked 19th in the Big Ten, averaging 5.2 boards per game. Among the Big Ten s top-20 rebounders from 2012-13, Brust is the only player under 6-foot-4. 2013 FINAL NOTES DEKKER FINISHES STRONG Freshman Sam Dekker scored in double figures in 7 of UW s last 8 regular season games, averaging 12.6 points and 3.4 rebounds over that span. Over that 8 game stretch, Dekker shot 53.3% (32-60) from the field, 44.1% (15-34) from 3-point range and 75.0% (15-20) at the FT line. Dekker is the Big Ten s best weapon off the bench. Among non-starters (which the Big Ten deems fewer than 10 starts), Dekker was the conference s leading scorer during Big Ten play. 2012-13 Big Ten Scoring Leaders, Non-Starters Player PPG RPG Starts 1. SAM DEKKER Freshman Forward 6-7 220 Sheboygan, Wis. PLAYER BIOS 15 HIGHLY DEKKER-ATED FRESHMAN Freshman Sam Dekker came to Wisconsin with impressive credentials (Parade All-American, U-18 National Team, ESPN Top-20 recruit), and he appears comfortable living up to that. u Dekker is averaging 22.3 minutes and ranks 4th on the team averaging 9.6 points per game. u He scored in double figures in 7 of the last 8 regularseason games averaging 12.6 ppg over that span. u Dekker ranks 7th in the Big Ten shooting 39.1% from 3-point range (48-118). He has made at least 1 triple in all but 6 games this season. u During conference play, Dekker finished 8th in the Big Ten shooting 50.0% from the field. u With 50 made 3-pointers, Dekker has already posted the 2nd-highest total for a freshman in Wisconsin annals. Devin Harris owns the freshman school record with 59 triples in 2002. Dekker s 3-point FG percentage (39.1%) would also rank as the 3d-highest mark for a UW freshman (current record is 44.1% by Tim Locum in 1988). u Dekker has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors twice this season (1/14 and 3/4). EXCLUSIVE COMPANY u Dekker is one of just 4 true freshman to start a game under Bo Ryan, joining Devin Harris, Alando Tucker and Josh Gasser. u He is putting up scoring numbers not often seen among Wisconsin freshmen. Dekker s 9.7 ppg game would rank as the 3rd-highest average for a freshman in the last 16 seasons. Freshmen Points per game, Since 1997-98 Player, Season PPG 1. Devin Harris, 2001 12.3 2. Wisconsin Coaching Staff BO RYAN HEAD COACH In his 29th season as a head coach and 12th atop the Wisconsin program, it s difficult to decide which is more impressive, Bo Ryan s incredible longevity or his unparalleled success. It is, however, safe to say that the combination of the two is what elevates Ryan among college basketball s elite. Owning the most wins in UW annals (291), Ryan is also one of just 40 coaches in NCAA history to reach the 650-win plateau. Ryan s career winning percentage of.757 (674-216) is 10th all-time among coaches with 600 career wins. Among Div. I coaches in the 600-win club, Ryan s win percentage trails only Adolph Rupp, John Wooden, Roy Williams, Jerry Tarkanian, Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski. A member of five Halls of Fame, Ryan has been enshrined into the Wilkes College Athletic Hall of Fame (2003), the Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (2008), the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (2011), the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2011) and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame (2012).
