Unit Plan Form Instructor: Date: November 16, 2010 Unit Content: Golf Number of Days in Unit: 15 School: Vero Middle Grade Level: 7 Number of Students: 30 Major Unit Focus Central Organizer: Golf is a popular lifetime sport. Any person, regardless of age or gender, can play golf successfully if they learn the pertinent skills. When a student understand and demonstrate proper play, he or she will gain knowledge, skill competence, and experience that will ultimately encourage the student to participate in golf for a lifetime. Golf is fairly complex with multiple rules for almost endless situations. In addition to skills, knowledge of rules needs to be understood in order to play correctly. Overall, Golf is a lifetime sport that is beneficial to the health of its players. Broad National and State Standards for Physical Education: National Standards: -Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns -Participate regularly in physical activity -Achieves a health enhancing level of physical fitness -Demonstrate socially responsible behavior and respect -Values physical Activity for health, enjoyment, and challenge State Standards: - 2.2.4 understand how ready position relates to balance and weight transfer in various activities - 3.1.5 list community resources that promote an active lifestyle - 3.3.5 regularly use a community resource as a part of an active lifestyle - 5.1.1 identify the social benefits of participation -5.1.2 cooperate respectfully with peers of a diverse population -5.1.3 make responsible decisions when applying rules, procedures, and etiquette - 6.1.4 identify activities that enhance lifelong fitness

Specific Unit Goals: -Student will demonstrate correct balance during and after a swing. -Student will list 3 Golf courses in the surrounding area where he or she could play. -Student will articulate his or her feelings about playing Golf individually and in a grouping by a paper assessment. -Student will list benefits of playing Golf for a lifetime. -Student will grip club using either an overlapping or interlocking grip. -Student will demonstrate correct address of the ball, utilizing correct stance for a swing. -Student will demonstrate knowledge of etiquette by listing norms for both greens and course play. -Student will identify and demonstrate specific cues for the chip shot. -Student will identify and demonstrate specific cues for the drive. -Student will identify and demonstrate specific cues for the putt. -Student will demonstrate knowledge of course management by a scenario based paper assessment. -Student will list equipment and clothing needed to play Golf. Essential Questions -What is the correct address and stance for maintaining balance and making a correct swing? -Where are 3 courses in the area where one could play Golf? -What are the student s feelings about playing Golf in a group and individually? -What are the benefits of playing Golf for a lifetime? -What are correct etiquette norms for greens and course play? -What equipment and clothing do you need to play Golf? -What specific skills or cues are needed for the drive, chip, and putt? -How should one play the course in varying situations? (Course Management) -What are the two acceptable grips?

Culminating Assessment: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Students will be bused to a par 3 course in close proximity to the school for a shotgun style tournament on several holes (number to be determined by class size). Students will be divided into groups of 3 or 4. Depending on class size the assessment will take either 3 or 4 days. Instructor will assess each student with rubric provided on a particular hole when the student s group circles around to that hole. Essential Knowledge and Skills: Essential Knowledge - Correct address and stance - Benefits of playing Golf in a group and lifetime - Equipment for Golf - Correct cues for drive, chip, and, putt - Course Management - Correct etiquette norms for course play Essential Skills - Address the ball and assume correct posture and stance - The overlapping and interlocking grip for full swing - Driving with wood - Pitch Shot - Putting - Course Management

-Rules, Greens Etiquette HW (assessment): Find 3 courses within 25 miles of school -Game- beanbag greens etiquette game Review HW -Physical, Emotional, Social benefits to playing Golf -Game- Benefits of Golf Jeopardy -Equipment, Clothing needs for Golf -Assess Emotional benefits by 1 page paper articulating feelings Review: Physical, Emotional, Social benefits to playing Golf, Equipment, Clothing -Assess clothing requirements by listing Review-Greens Etiquette -Course Etiquette -Assessment by listing norms for greens and course etiquette -Intro. of interlocking grip, address, and stance w/full swing -Practice: With 9 Iron/whiffle balls -Game: Hit balls at targets (assess balance) -Review of grip, address, and stance -Practice: With 9 Iron/whiffle balls -Game: Hit targets in zones (assess grip) -Review and Refine grip, address, and stance -Practice: With 9 Iron/whiffle balls -Game: Hit targets in zones (assess address) Putting- stance, grip, swing, balance, reading greens -Game- Obstacle Putting Course Review: Grip, address, stance and putting -Chipping- bump and run, lob -Game- putting obstacle course (assess putting) Drive: swing, stance, grip, balance Practice: Drive whiffle balls Game: Hit targets in zones (assess Driving) Review chip, drive, putt Practice: driving, chipping, putting -Course Managementhazards, rules, unique situations -Game- beanbag golf Assess course management w/ scenario based paper -Discuss next day s assessment, go over rubric and rules Culminating Assessment Block Plan: Critical Resources:

Culminating Golf Assessment Rubric Assessor (instructor) will mark a check in the appropriate box after observing student for 1 hole of golf. Name: Always (10/10) Most of the Time (9-6/10) Sometimes (5-1/10) Never (0/10). Uses either verlapping or terlocking grip. Aligns stance square the ball. Swings club on ppropriate swing plane. Demonstrates proper alance during swing nd follow-through
