TEAM IDAHO INFORMATION SHEET 2018 PURPOSE OF THE CLUB Welcome to the YMCA Track Club: Team Idaho! Team Idaho was formed 40 years ago for the purpose of giving kids an opportunity to learn proper techniques and drills that would help them improve in Track & Field. The Club sponsors a Cross Country and Track & Field team. Both have been very successful competitively, producing top athletes in Idaho and at the National level. Many of our athletes have brought home medals from the National Junior Olympic Track Meet held once a year, including a record setting National championship. Our boys and girls Cross-Country teams have won many national titles and a numerous runner-up titles. While our coaching staff and members are very proud of YMCA Team Idaho's accomplishments, our primary focus is in developing each and every member to his/her best ability at all skill levels from the beginner to advanced kids. Our main goals at YMCA Team Idaho is in developing good sportsmanship, a sense of fair play, team spirit, the setting and reaching of individual goals, and a healthy attitude towards competitiveness. Team Idaho provides an opportunity for athletes to compete in many different track & field events (see AllComer Meet information for events). More importantly, it offers social interaction and a fun, friendly learning environment for lowkey training to high quality competition. Athletes compete against other athletes at their same age/ability level. For the advanced elite athlete, special programs can be set up to meet their needs. Contact head coach Tim Severa for more information. If you are 6 years old or older, come out and join the fun, join the Team! Team Idaho! Remember THE FOUR CHARACTER VALUES: HONESTY, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, & CARING will make your experience the best possible for everyone. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED NOTE: Our club's success depends on the involvement of both the coaching staff and the parents of our athletes. To put on a successful track meet, 25 volunteers are needed. We need your help! Parents will be asked to help out at two track meets. It is a lot of fun, guaranteed! And easy. We will train you. More importantly your children will take pride in the fact you cared enough to help. TO VOLUNTEER FOR ANY OF THE ALLCOMERS MEETS PLEASE CONTACT TIM SEVERA at 344-5502 x 211 or Jack Ward AT 344-5502 x 270. Coaches Tim Severa, director and head coach, has been with the club for 40 years. Tim directs the total program and directs the travel and coaching assignments. Tim himself is an avid distance runner and is responsible for many fun runs in the Boise area. He is very dedicated to the sport and to our young athletes in general. We are very proud to have his expertise and dedication. Thank you Tim! Our coaching staff is made up of past track competitors, current competitors, and community coaches. The expertise of these paid & volunteer coaches is invaluable to us. While their backgrounds and experience vary, they all have one thing in common: They all love to work with and develop the capabilities of young athletes in Track & Field. TRACK ROCKS!!!!!

The Club will provide some inexpensive travel arrangements for all Club members interested in Traveling. We like to stay together as a team and also provide transportation for those kids in need. GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS DECIDING ON NATIONAL COMPETITION In the past 40 years our club has taken hundreds of kids to the National Junior Olympic meets. Most of these experiences have been great, however some have not been so good. In our region sometimes the competitions are weaker than the in other regions around the country and kids may qualify for the National Meet, that are not up to the National levels of competition. This kind of experience has been seen as detrimental to the development of your child emotionally as well as physically. Our Board of directors has came up with some recommended standards for those kids considering National level competitions. Regional Competitions are recommended to all participants. Attatched you will find a guidline to standards we feel will make your child s experience worthwhile at the National Level. Please refer to these standards when considering sending your child to Nationals or talk to one of the coaches. YMCA TEAM IDAHO T-SHIRTS AND WARM-UPS YMCA TEAM IDAHO will be providing each club member with a club singlet which we would like to see kids wear at all local meets and all out-of-town meets where the athlete is representing YMCA Team Idaho. Team Idaho uniforms consists of warm-ups, singlet and shorts. These items may be checked out prior to the Junior Olympic Meets (at no cost) and should be returned (in good condition) at the end of the season. Participants who do not return uniforms, will have their accounts charged, which is generally $68 for Singlet and Shorts, and $80 for Warmups. Our sponsors this year are Bandanna Running and Walking, which is located at 504 Main Street in Boise, and Domino s Pizza. Athletes that are planning on attending the Regional Junior Olympic meet and also are considering

traveling out of state are recommended to check out the uniforms or purchase one. Uniforms can be purchased by contacting Jack Ward. Uniforms can also be purchased through our Team Store at the beginning of the Summer SHOES Good supportive shoes help prevent injuries. A running shoe that offers good arch support is preferred over a court shoe. Shoes should be reserved for practice and competition only to keep them in top condition. For the serious competitor, track shoes with spikes are recommended for some events. Practicing in spikes is not recommended. Your coach will tell you when to use them in practice. See Tim or any of the other coaches for more details. This equipment is available at several local sporting goods stores. We recommend you go see our sponsor BANDANNA RUNNING AND WALKING STORE AT 504 Main St. in Boise (386-9017) for all your track equipment needs. Tim has a limited number of used track shoes that can be borrowed. The club would appreciate the donation of any track shoes that you are no longer using. Track spikes are recommended, but not required. THEY HELP MAKE YOU FAST AND THEY LOOK REALLY COOL. MULTI-EVENTS We strongly encourage kids to get involved in the multi-events program. By trying different events, you will find out what you are best at. You are awarded points for your marks in each event and the winner is the person with the most points. Someone who is average at all events will do well. Below is the list of events for the various age groups. 10 & under Triathlon (3 events): shot put (6lbs), High Jump, 200m(G), 400m(B) 11-12 Pentathlon (5 events): 80m hurdles, shot put(6lbs), high jump, long jump, 800m(G), 1500m(B) 13-14 Pentathlon (5 events): 100m hurdles, shot put(g-6lbs, B-4K), high jump, long jump, 800m(G), 1500m(B) 15-18 girls Heptahlon (7 events): 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put(4k), 200m, long jump, javelin(600g), 800m 15-18 boys Decathlon (10 events): 100m, long jump, shot put(12lbs), high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus(1.6k), pole vault, javelin(800g), 1500m BOARD OF DIRECTORS/PARENTS GROUP A parent's group was established to provide support for and assist the coaching staff. Current officers: President: Florence Erickson Vice President: Open Secretary: Rich Caballero Head Coach: Tim Severa Assistant Head Coach: Jack Ward & Bryan Stith Many parents are actively involved with YMCA Team Idaho in various capacities. All parents are invited and encouraged to help. Parents need to sign up to help time, mark jumps and throws, judge exchange zones, handle registration, etc. at two track meets per season. Parents are also needed to chaperone out-of-town meets, answer questions at practices and many other areas. Please contact Tim Severa at 344-5502 x 211 or Jack Ward at 344-5502 x 270. If you have a talent that is of value to the Team, please do not hesitate to make it known. All efforts combine to make YMCA Team Idaho a better program for our children!

SIGN UP PROCEDURES FOR ALL COMERS MEETS 1) Come to the Tent at the Start/Finish Line. Inform us if you are a team member and give your NAME & AGE (as of Dec, 31, 2018). You will be asked how many events you want to do (we do not need to know which events). Remember ages 12 and under can do 3 events and ages 13 and up can do 4 events. You will be given a color coded TAG for each event. 2) On each TAG write your first and last name and a B and a G to indicate Boy or Girl. Free for Team Idaho Members who are also USATF Members; $2 per event for Team Idaho Members who are Non-USATF Members; $2 per event for USATF Member and Non-Team Idaho Member; $3 per event for Non-USATF Member and Non-Team Idaho Member 3) Place the TAG on your shirt. (Younger children should only wear one TAG at a time so they will not lose them.) A TAG will be pulled off at the beginning of a field event or at the finish line after a race. 4) If you are competing in a field event, go to that event and check in. If you are running in a race, go to the starting area when the race is announced. 5) All athletes receive ribbons if they complete an event. Ribbons are given for 1 st 6 th place in each age group and participation (or 6 th place) ribbons to all other competitors. 6) After each event, results will be handed out at the dugout and placement will be determined. 7) In running events, there may be many heats of a single age group or heats with multiple age groups. For these reasons, placement will not be determined until after all heats (all age groups) are completed. THEREFORE, WINNING YOUR HEAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU WILL FINISH FIRST IN YOUR AGE GROUP. After the last heat, it will take approx. 10 minutes to determine placement and start handing out ribbons. 8) Athletes running the 50 meter race (10 and under) will be given ribbons when they cross the finish line. This race will not be timed. 9) No TAG is needed and no ribbons are given for relay races.

YMCA Track Volunteering All Comers Meets at Borah High School 1. Each site will Volunteer on specific dates May 31 st Borah High/ Boise High June 7 th Rocky Mtn. June 14 th Nampa/Mtn. Volunteer shifts Pits: 4-6 adults Throwing: 2-4 adults Timers: 12-14 Adults (Includes Finish Line Clerk) Concessions: 2 Adults Organizing Start Lines: 2-4 Adults Total 22-28 Adults This will not eliminate staffing completely but it will do 2 things 1. Decrease the staff needed 2. Open staff up to coach rather than run a watch. These volunteers will still need staff assistance at each spot. Basics- Save on cost of staffing all comers. Use one of the staff to coordinate volunteers each week. Use one of the trusted staff takes 2 hours each week (Monday) and coordinates who will be where and when on Thursday based on parents signup sheet from the parents meeting. This staffer is responsible for laying out the schedule, calling and emailing each of the volunteer, directing volunteer traffic on Thursday night. Y will spend money on a few hours for this staffer ( Volunteer Coordinator ) but it will be cheaper then 12 staffers for 3 hours on that Thursday night. No Show Volunteers - We need to staff at least 2 people to fill in as floaters (but I am also confident we will have parents willing to step in on another locations night to help out.) Pits- They do not need to be experts just rack and hold the tape. Throwing- Hold the tape; get kids in the correct order. Timers- 2 sets of 6 timers will knock things out quicker and hopefully remove confusion. I recommend each group of 6 has one person be team captain for the 6. This person makes sure everyone on the team is coordinated throughout the night. 9

Concessions- This is tricky because money is involved. But it still is not large amount of money in the scheme of things. I think this one is easy BUT must be and adult.
