Dear Cattlemen, Hutchings Cattle Co. is excited to welcome you to our 17th Annual BLACK ATTACK BULL SALE. What a great bull offering! We are fewer in numbers this year but the quality is exceptional and this is the largest number of fall coming two year old bulls we have ever offered. Not only are the numbers of older bulls greater, but the quality and kind are as good as you will find anywhere in the country. An added bonus is that you will get more for your dollar at our Fallon, NV sale than at any other production sale or consignment event. I can guarantee that. We would encourage you to attend the sale this year to simply improve the quality of your bull battery. The day spent here on February 22nd at 1:00 pm will bring great dividends to your cattle program. We have been breeding Registered Angus Cattle for 20 years now with quality as our number one goal. Over the years I have had the privilege of seeing the fruits of our labor in the industry. I've seen our herd and our customers' herds improve yearly. We've tested our product on cattle we ran on our central Nevada ranches. I've experienced first hand how good Angus bulls will transform a set of wild desert cows into a productive group of mother cows whose calves will bring top dollar at the video sales. Please plan to attend the sale and take advantage of the volume discounts. Join us for lunch and then relax. You'll know you've come to the right place. Ki Two Eyed May 28, 1998-Nov. 20, 2013 On November 20, 2013, tragedy came unannounced and unexpected. Late in the afternoon in some freak way, Ki Two Eyed must have gotten his leg stuck in the pipe fence of his corral, tried standing up without freeing his leg and somehow broke his femur bone up high in his hip. Because of this impossible situation, Ki had to be put down. Life ended that day but his legacy will live on forever. He has graduated to a greater realm. Tragedy has its purpose and leaves many questions in its wake. My first thoughts were, Why Ki?, Of 17 17th Annual Black Attack Bull Sale all the one hundred horses on the ranch why was it Ki?, Why did this happen to me? Ki was the anchor of our program. And there is so much more to do. Perhaps the greater question to ask is, What can I learn from this great horse and his life? I am a livestock producer and I am involved with a large number of animals. Birth and death are regular experiences. Somehow this loss is different. We will mourn the loss of Ki in a much more profound way. He was special to my family and me. You could say he was a part of the family. Ki was never paraded through a sale ring. I picked him when he was a young colt still on his mother in the green meadows of the sand hills of Ericson, NE. He was in the keeper group of colts because he was so good. From weanling to death, Ki had some kind of power in his presence that made you stop and take another look. He was the kind of horse that inspired my dreams for the future. There will be many pages in my book of life that will involve Ki Two Eyed. He was the very essence of Hutchings Performance Horses. Not only did he look like a champion, he became one. My only regret is that I didn t know how or have the means to make him even more famous. What I did know was how great he really was. In the end that is all that really matters. Many friends of mine along the way have shared my experiences with Ki Two Eyed. May I mention two in this writing? Ken Andrus of Lava Hot Springs, ID was responsible for introducing me to the folks at Pitzer Ranch in Nebraska. Jim Brinkman, of Pitzer Ranch, was the breeder and trainer of Ki. Were it not for these two people, my vision of producing quality quarter horses might not have happened. Ki was a strong breeder. He had one hundred seventyfive foals in thirteen crops. There is one crop left to count this coming spring. His offspring are loved and appreciated by many. Never did I feel like Ki had completed his purpose in our program. I thought that there would be many more breeding seasons and offspring. But death has its own time line. It s my belief that God knows the day and hour of that appointment. I will accept it as His will. My great friend Ki Two Eyed and I will meet again in a better place. The bitterness of the decision to euthanize Ki actually became a spiritual experience. I m not sure I have the right words to explain, but after administering the anesthetic, he gracefully collapsed to the ground. Dr. Faught listened for his heart to stop and then he left this mortal existence of pain. I was warmed by a feeling that life goes on after death and that his departure from this life was comfortable and swift. Death is nothing but a door that is opened to the next life. What can I learn from this great horse and his life here? Life is sweet and life is eternal. The day after Ki s passing, my sadness gradually turned to thankfulness. I m thankful for a fifteen-year journey that was filled with wonderful experiences and a wide-reaching group of new friends. I m thankful for the satisfaction of owning a stallion that could stamp his babies, head out of the box, and be gentle enough for a good friend to ride when we gathered cows. I m thankful that Ki Two Eyed was a big part of my dream come true.
