That s why the U.S Coast Guard recommends that all recreational boaters (including personal watercraft users) take advantage of the free Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program every year. VSCs are offered by experienced members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons, two of the nation s premier volunteer boating safety organizations. A VSC is your best way of learning about problems that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse, create danger for you or your passengers on the water. Sarah Bremer, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 53 and PAC member, will be glad to provide you with a courtesy inspection. Call Sarah on 397-3659, and she will set up an appointment to come to you and provide a free USCG Vessel Safety Check. In Club Tournament Otto Dunn is stepping down as the Prize Fish Chairman, so we are in need of a new chairperson for the in-club quarterly tournaments to continue. Please contact Otto at 488-5550 or email him at otto.dunn@verizon.net if you are interested in chairing the Prize fish committee. 2017 PAC Membership 2017 PAC Membership dues were due on January 1st. Remember, to participate in club tournaments and be eligible for club awards, your dues must be paid before you go fishing. The cost of a family membership is only $30 and includes all household members under 18. Single memberships are only $20. PAC Memberships also include The Angler, our monthly newsletter, and the free fish fry dinner held in October each year. Please either mail your dues to the PAC post office box or bring them to the next meeting. Also, include your email address so The Angler can be emailed to you. Emailing the newsletter saves PAC money and you will receive your newsletter several days sooner. See page 11 for membership form. 2

FISHING REPORT April 13, 2017 By: Lee Tolliver Anglers already are reporting good numbers of puppy drum throughout the lower Bay and the three southside inlets. Most fish are small, falling under the 18- to 26- inch keeper slot, but some fish are coming in bigger. Large red drum already are migrating into the mouth of the Bay, setting up shop in the shoals around the Eastern Shore's southern-most barrier islands. Some black drum also are showing. Commercial netters are seeing some croaker, but it likely will take a few weeks for waters to warm up enough to make fish interested in rod-and-reel offerings. Some flounder are being taken from Eastern Shore seaside creeks and inlets, but the really good action will take a few weeks to crank up. As is typical for this time of year, the catches will be best on a falling tide as warmer waters heated in the marshes pours back into the creeks. Small striped bass remain an option for catch-and-release action. Fish continue to be active inside Lynnhaven Inlet and along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Boston mackerel have been caught along the coast. There even were reports of fish being taken as far west in the Bay as Buckroe Beach. Deep-dropping baits and jigs along the edges of the Norfolk Canyon continues to produce tilefish and several other bottom species. Dogfish are still messing up some trips, but they appear to be thinning out as they head closer to the coast. If you catch a few, keep them for dinner. They re yummy. Bottom bouncing also will continue to produce sea bass. But remember that the season doesn t open until May 21. It s been a great season for the bluefin tuna industry, with lots of big fish topping 500 pounds being taken. But the season for the big boys is now closed, leaving some fantastic catch-and-release action. Deeper coastal wrecks are yielding triggerfish and grouper. Out of Hatteras Inlet, trips are returning with good numbers of blackfin tuna. Small striped bass and some puppy drum should be available in the inlets. Look for striper in the current of the Intracoastal Waterway around Coinjock. Red drum already are being taken by surf casters working Hatteras Point, but the best action is still to come. The first big schools of fish are showing for sight-casters working the coast. Lots of fish topping 40 inches long are being caught and released. Anglers working drum baits from shore are already seeing significant shark action while fishing at night. Surfcasters also are picking up some smaller red drum, small black drum and increasing numbers of pufferfish. The mouths of tidal systems on the western side of the Carolina sounds should be holding some yellow and white perch. Largemouth bass fishing on just about all fronts has been nothing shy of fantastic. The water supply lakes in Suffolk have been especially good the past two weeks. Fish are being caught using a variety of lures. While it s a little late for yellow perch in the tidal waters of both states, fish are still being taken. Crappie are biting on all fronts. The best action will come from anglers finding wooden structure in 6 feet of water or less. Big lay-downs stretching to deeper water will be the best locations for slabs this time of year. Use live minnows or jigs around the outside edges for bigger fish. Reported by Lee Tolliver in the Virginia-Pilot 4/13/17 Lee.tolliver@pilotonline.com 3

Pictures of Recent Catches Each month I will try to publish pictures from PAC members of recent catches. Please email pictures to rtjordan@verizon.net, with a brief description of who, where, what and when, and I will try to include it in the next issue of The Angler. These pictures and more can be seen on our website gallery. Congratulations to Brian Hartung and friend who won the Norfolk Lakes Bass tournament sponsored by Oceans East. Proud Grandpa by John Meagher Pictured is my grandson, 13 year old Shawn Parker who is a PAC Junior Member. He, as well as, the following Junior and Guppy members of our club received trophies and recognition for their fishing accomplishments for the 2016 season. Shawn was unable to attend the 52 nd Annual Awards Banquet held on March 18, 2017 at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club. Proud Grandpa collected the trophies and certificates (that are pictured) to deliver to his grandson. Shawn received a Participation Trophy, a Release Plaque for the Most Releases Fresh Water Junior, Certificate for Largest in Species Salt Water (non-citation), Most Outstanding Catch Salt Water Trophy (Spanish Mackerel 18.5 inches), Most Outstanding Catch Fresh Water Trophy (Blue Catfish 14 inch) and Angling Achievement Award Release Certificate for the Spanish Mackerel and the Blue Catfish. Needless to say, I m quite proud of my grandson, because he loves to fish and it doesn t matter if it is a retention pond, a lake, a river, an ocean or anywhere there is water that may have fish in it. This past year, we went fishing on the Ocean View Fishing Pier, on a Charter Boat, Headboat and on the Headboat Shawn had the top catch and won the boat pool. He has qualified over the past three years for the Virginia Junior Angler Award Program sponsored by Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament a program of the Virginia Marine Resource Commission. It was a pleasure to watch the kids that attended the banquet receive their certificates and trophies. The following is a list of the kids that received recognition. The names are as follows: Aidan Gregoire, Mira Barnes, Camryn Collier, Makenzie Bagley, Jacob Bagley, Rachel Moore, Caleb Bagley Branden Moore. Congratulations to all of you and we look forward to you being the future of the PAC Club. Those that attend the banquet also received a rod and reel. If you have a child who loves to fish and their parents are not a member of our club the child could join as a Junior Member at a cost of $10.00 per year. They receive the same benefits as a regular club member with the exception of voting rights. They are also able to apply for the PAC College Scholarship worth $1000.00 to be given to a graduating senior whom is heading off to a recognized college, university or trade school.
