Message from the President Jim Allen Once again I find that I am cutting the deadline close. I had planned to have the newsletter completed and mailed this past Wednesday but as usual things go wrong and my attention is diverted elsewhere. So here I am 10:30 PM Thursday night editing, writing and arranging the Saltwater Gazette wondering if I dare go fishing on a JAX JIGS trip this Saturday. What worse could happen besides that I get further behind? Continued on page 5 February Raffle The February raffle will be a Shakespeare 7 Ugly Stick and a Penn 500 Jigmaster reel. Tickets will be available for sale and pick-up at the January General Meeting HELP! We really need member participation to make these raffles work. We need you to pick up and sell tickets. The money earned will go back to the club members in the form of awards, prizes and club supplies for the Annual Picnic and Year-end Awards Banquet. We are also using the money to advertise the club so we can grow and possibly charter larger boats and fish more often. So how about lending a hand. THANKS March Raffle The March raffle will be a LamiGlass Rod 7' E-270 Rod and a Penn 525 reel with 15 lb test. Tickets will be available for sale and pick-up at the March General Meeting. ALUMINUM CAN DRIVE Sid Rouzer is our Can Man Thanks Sid! So everyone remember to bring your cans to our meeting or arrange with Sid to drop them off. The cans help pay for monthly raffles and to cover club expenses. Please clean and crush so we don t collect ants too. JUST THINKING OUT LOUD... Fred Erickson, HDSA Secretary It seems as though the High Desert Saltwater Anglers, as a club, are starting to get some recognition. The hundreds of people I've talked to in the last three years, the countless flyers I've passed out, the shows and seminars I've attended and the non-club fishing trips I've been on are paying off. Average attendance at the monthly club meeting is now over 25. I'm meeting people that show signs of interest in becoming a member, or at least going on a trip with me. And to think, all I did was talk fishing. ----Right about here you are supposed to go------ I've been doing that too!! Good for you!! After all, it is YOUR club. Have you signed out some raffle tickets to buy or to sell to your friends?? How about some aluminum cans?? Made plans to go on a club trip?? Made plans to set up a table at the club swap meet in June?? Going to the Fred Hall show with us in March... the day before our first club trip on the Tracer?? Reserved a spot on the summer tuna trips from San Diego?? In this hectic time it may seem like it is impossible to plan that far ahead. Fact of the matter is...you have to. The trip you were counting on just sold out. The ride you had planned to share...just got filled, sorry. That rod/reel you have been wanting...you guessed it... just got sold. Why, you ask, is this happening?? The club is growing, expanding, and increasing its activities. Sure you can pay for a trip now and then and be as welcomed as ever, but now there is so much more to do. I, for one, look forward to doing it with you. Just a footnote here...only four spots left open on the club JIGS-ONLY trip in June. I'll start taking some money for the trip at the Feb meeting. Just a deposit---- $20.00 should be OK. When I get a load (15) I'll book us a boat. And remember... this is a 5am 'til----- trip, NOT an overnight. Fred Secretary...HDSA Saltwater Gazette 4
Message from the President (con t) Continued from page 3 It's been over a month since I have been angling and the withdrawals are getting dangerous for my family. Maybe I will go, who cares about all those nasty chores, bills, and taxes they will still be there when I get back Sunday. However maybe I can hold off for another week. Then there is BIG STRESS RELIEF, the Fred Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show in Long Beach followed by a charter on one of my favorite boats the Tracer. This is a great time of the year for anglers. In February you have the LA Boat Show, then in March the Long Beach and Del Mar Fred Hall Shows, then the Marina Del Ray Halibut Derby, finally in April the Santa Monica Bay Halibut Derby and a return to the Ventura Fred Hall Show. Then you add in our March, April and May charters and there is a lot of fishing gratification taking place. I will be one relaxed and tired fisherman. Now if I can just not spend too much so I don't stress over the VISA bill in June! On a different note, how many of you noticed that all my Shimano TLD 15/30s growled? I know everyone that I fished with did because everyone was making jokes about it. Well I thought all they needed was a little bit of oil so I started to take one apart and immediately lost a washer. Well that ended that experience. I quickly reassembled that reel without the washer and ran all three to Desert Offshore to let a professional handle it. I picked them up this week and Clint informed me that the reels were totally dry. In fact he asked me if I washed them in the dishwasher. I was offended, hey I am the president did he think I was some yahoo from the desert?? Wait a minute I am not sure I want the answer to that question. Well the moral of the story is, it does not matter what the reason was for the lack of lubrication was I need to be more attentive to my equipment if I want it to last. Clint showed me how to remove the spool, without a chance to lose any parts, and oil the bushing, bearing and spindle. He also gave me great advice on maintenance and adding a bearing for casting performance. Thanks Clint. So if you are like me and a little scared of the innards of your reel visit a professional, get it fixed, and learn how to take care of you tackle investment. I look forward to a great year of angling with all of you! Jim February March HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Dave Dunbabin Sr. Paul Meyer Chuck Francey Club News We are now up to 37 members and still looking for more. Thank You to all those who are bringing their buddies to the meetings and trips. Toby Taube will have embroidered hats for sale at the February Meeting. The cost is $16 each. Saltwater Gazette 5
