Operating Manual Safety Information Guide

Page 2 Table of Contents Before You Begin 3 Safety Tips 4 Standard Operating Procedures 5 Warranty Information 6 Technical Specifications 7 Thank You for your Purchase The team at Sailology thanks you for your purchase of the WinchRite. We wish you many years of easy and safe sailing. Please be sure to read this manual carefully before use. Your WinchRite box contains one unit plus the following: > Quick charging device/100-240 volt AC-Shore power-1 > Trickle charging device/12 volt DC-On board power-1 > Specialty winch socket-1 > Storage tote bag-1

Page 3 Before You Begin WinchRite is designed to operate the winches of a sailboat in normal cruising conditions. It is not designed to eliminate an on-board manual winch handle. A manual winch handle should always be available to operate your winches. WinchRite should never be used to haul a person up a mast. It is our opinion that any mast climbing is a very dangerous undertaking and should only be performed by a professional experienced rigging service. Serious injury or death can occur if mast hauling is not performed properly. WinchRite should be used by persons knowledgeable in sailing techniques and familiar with the boat rigging it is to be used upon. WinchRite will allow you to rotate winches in both directions; this allows for two speed winches to be operated as designed. We recommend self-tailing winches as the best way to utilize the operation of your WinchRite WinchRite will allow you to pull or haul sails up the mast and pull or haulout a sail that is furled. Variable speed of the device will allow some degree of trimming of the sails. A standard winch handle may be needed for the fine tweaking or trimming of sails. WinchRite was designed to perform the heavy or tedious bulk task of hauling or pulling sails. This device was inspired by the cruising community so that one may truly enjoy the cruising sailboat experience; it was not designed for racing and may not conform to some racing rules. Although WinchRite has a rugged lighter-weight design, caution should be used when handling the device so as to prevent damage from dropping or impact.

Page 4 Sailing Safety Tips Some ABC s Sailing carries a degree of unpredictability due to sudden changes which occur on the water beyond a sailor s control. It may be very easy to injure your extremities such as hands and fingers when sailing. Additionally, sailboats are fastened with a large amount of equipment, such as winches, hooks, cleats and other devices that are necessary for sailing. All of this equipment may become hazardous at any given moment. A sudden wind gust, a wave or wakes can make this equipment an instant threat to your hands and fingers if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Below are some safety tips to help keep your hands and fingers in their rightful place. A-lways pay attention! Be aware of what is happening around you at all times. Sudden wind shifts, waves and wakes from other boats can result in attitude changes of your sailboat. The more prepared you are for these types of changes, the better you will respond to them as they occur. B-efore you grab look! Know where you re reaching and what you are grabbing. Know which parts of the boat are stable and safe to grab onto. Many hand and finger sailing injuries are a result of slips and falls, as someone loses their balance or their grip. Sailboats have many hazards inherent to the hardware; the important thing is identifying the safe grab areas before you actually need to know they re there. C-aution should always be used! The use of sailing gloves is recommended and can be found in many sizes with full or partial hand and finger coverage. While sailing gloves cannot fully prevent the risk of a hand or finger injury, they do provide a degree of protection. In addition, they enhance your gripping, which helps with grasping wet surfaces or while making adjustments to rigging lines quickly and firmly. This can lower the chances of a painful rope-burn or a loose line on deck resulting in a hazardous trip and fall for you, the crew or passengers. Do Not Overload Your WinchRite Device Your WinchRite device is designed with internal heat sensors which will react to overloading. In extreme cases, an extended period of time may be needed for cooling/resetting of the unit. The WinchRite has its limits and should not be considered a solution for poor rigging conditions or improperly tuned rigging. If you find the WinchRite cannot turn or pull the intended load, stop and have your rigging evaluated for proper run and installation methods.

Page 5 Standard Operating Procedures Preparing the WinchRite and your rigging for use: Fully charge your WinchRite battery utilizing the charger provided with this product. (USE ONLY THE APPROVED CHARGER) A red indicator light will appear during charging and turn green when charging is complete. Initial first charging may take up to four hours. After charging is complete, install the provided specialty winch cog socket to the square drive area of the device. You are now ready to use your new WinchRite Cordless Winch Handle. Load your winch with the line to be pulled in the standard manner. We recommend you utilize a greater portion of the winch drum with at least three wraps. Rig your lines ensuring they run straight from the blocks to your winch without rubbing against anything that could prevent operation and/or cause damage to the line or hardware. Ensure you have used proper lubrication for any slide tracks or blocks. Run the length of your lines through your hands to guarantee they are free of any twists or knots. Lay the line in the open palm of your hand and begin wrapping it in a clockwise motion around the spool of the winch until there is a minimum of three wraps. Keep your hand above the winch as you wrap, taking care not to wrap the line around your hand or fingers. Hold the line taut and free of slack so that it lies on top of itself, snug to the winch. Verify there are no overlaps or knots in the line. Place WinchRite on the winch ensuring the cog of the device is dropped into the cap stand socket. Initially, just tap the power switch to confirm you are driving the winch in the intended direction. Begin winch operation to achieve your intended result. If using a two speed winch it is recommended to utilize the lower speed to achieve maximum torque and to prevent overheating. WinchRite is designed to pull away from your hand during operation as a safety precaution to prevent over-torque of the unit, your winch and/or rigging.
