NORTH CAROLINA EARLY SETTLEMENTS Croatan Mytery Tree xxxxx Roanoke Mini-Scroll Book Student learn about the Lot Colony of Roanoke by making a model and writing a tory. F Colonial Day and Way F ) 10 I n 1585, after receiving a land grant from Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh ent 108 men to the New World to create the firt Englih ettlement. Raleigh gave the name of Virginia to hi land grant. The ettlement wa located on Roanoke Iland, which i off the coat of what i now North Carolina. Raleigh colonit tayed for a year. Although many refued to work, ome colonit did build a fort and houe on Roanoke. At firt, the local Native American were friendly, but then tenion aroe between them and the colonit. All but 15 men returned to England with Sir Franci Drake, who wa on hi way from Spanih Florida to England. In 1587 Raleigh ent over about 150 men, women, and children to Roanoke under the leaderhip of John White. Except for the bone of one man, there wa no ign of the 15 men who had remained. After a month White realized how much the colony needed in order to flourih. He ailed back to England for upplie. White family including hi granddaughter Virginia Dare, the firt Englih child born in North America tayed behind on Roanoke. Becaue of war between England and Spain, White wan t able to return to Roanoke until 1590. When he and hi crew returned to the fort, the colonit and their houe had diappeared. The only clue to their whereabout wa the word Croatan carved on a tree. Croatan wa the name of a friendly

NORTH CAROLINA EARLY SETTLEMENTS Native American tribe and an iland about 50 mile away. Did the ettler go to live with the Croatan people? Did they get lot on their way to the iland of Croatan? Did they die from hunger, ickne, or hotile attack? To thi day, no one know. The firt permanent ettler in North Carolina came from Virginia in the 1630. In 1663, King Charle II granted a huge piece of land called the Carolina to eight men. The land wa plit into two part, Albemarle in the north and Clarendon in the outh. In 1712, Albemarle became the colony of North Carolina. Making the Model 1 Color Croatan Mytery Tree uide tudent in following thee tep to make the model: the page and cut out the piece. 2 Roll the CROATAN TREE pattern into a cylinder and tape it.
