BWF MEMORANDUM NEW EXPERIMENTAL LAWS ON SCORING SYSTEM 13 April 2016 BWF tested experimental scoring systems in two separate periods from August to October 2014, and from February to April 2015 with this last trial period including the testing of two different setting options. Match data and stakeholder feedback was collected from both testing periods, analyzed, and considered by BWF Council. At its meeting in May 2015, BWF Council agreed to a third period of testing from September 2016 through to 31 December 2017. Analysis from tournaments played to September 2017 will be considered by Council at its meeting in October/November 2017 and further analysis from tournaments played October to December 2017 will be considered in the analysis provided to the AGM in May 2018. A proposal could be presented to the membership at the Annual General Meeting in May 2018. BWF would like to invite all Level 3 BWF Grand Prix, all BWF Level 4, and all international sanctioned junior tournaments taking place between September 2016 and 31 December 2017, to test options for a new scoring system played with best of five games of 11 points with one of the following formats for setting: 1. Setting to a maximum of 15 points; or 2. A three-point decider if the score reaches 10-all. There will only be a one-minute break between games. Setting Option 1 At 10-all, the player/pair wins the game when a two point lead is achieved, or first to 15 when the score reaches 14-all. Setting Option 2 At 10-all, a 3 points challenge will be played where the first player/pair to score three points wins the game. The score for that game would be displayed as 11-10 (3-2), 11-10 (3-1), or 11-10 (3-0). Please note the two variations to the experimental Laws of Badminton as presented on the following page: NOTE: The experimental laws stated below are only those sections that are different than the current laws as per the respective sections of the Handbook II, Section 1A Laws of Badminton. Please refer to the current laws section for all other scoring details.

BWF will provide detailed information to you on the data, statistics, and feedback we require. We are working with our tournament software provider on the required functionality to allow hosts to use either setting option. Please feel free to undertake testing at your domestic events and leagues and we welcome information from athletes, spectators, technical officials and other partners involved in those events. However, if you are a Member Association hosting a BWF sanctioned international tournament at Level 3 Grand Prix, Level 4, or a BWF sanctioned junior international tournament on the attached list, or anticipate receiving sanction in 2017 for your tournament (not listed), we need your support to test one of the two new scoring system options for your forthcoming tournament. BWF will send templates detailing the information we would like to receive from your testing of the experimental scoring system, and so that we can get consistent feedback from hosts and Member Associations. Action If you are hosting one of the tournaments on the following pages, please confirm if you intend to adopt the experimental scoring system for your tournament, and if so, indicate which of the two options you would like to test. Please reply to BWF Technical Events Manager, Chris Trenholme at: c.trenholme@bwfbadminton.org, by 30 June 2016. If you are undertaking tests in domestic tournaments and leagues please provide full details of the event, including when and where it will take place. Conclusion We urge you to support this third vital testing period to enable BWF to fully analyze the impact of the new experimental scoring system. We look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Poul-Erik Høyer President Badminton World Federation
