Be the Beat

Some things to think about Why are we learning hands only CPR? Why is it important to be knowledgeable in hands only CPR? What do you already know about hands only CPR? What is the difference between hands only CPR and mouth-to-mouth CPR?

Facts Everyday approx. 800 people suffer cardiac arrest Fewer than 8% survive (64 out of 800) Less than 1/3 of cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from an bystander CPR can more than double the chance of survival Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in adults.

Terms we will use this unit: Cardiac Arrest: Heart stops beating Unresponsive: Person does not talk, move, or respond when talked to or shaken Hands Only CPR: Chest compressions only AED: Computer device that will provide a shock to restart the heart

Emergency Action Plan Steps 1. Survey the Scene Check the surroundings to make sure the scene is safe Why is this step important?

Emergency Action Plan Steps 2. Check for Responsiveness Tap and Shout Tap on the shoulder Hey! Hey! Are you OK?!

Emergency Action Plan Steps Check your ABCs 3. Check Airway Look 4. Check Breathing Listen 5. Check Circulation (Pulse) Feel

Emergency Action Plan Steps Call for 6. Have someone near call 911 and get an AED (if available) If you are by yourself, what should you do?

Begin Hands Only CPR Watch this video to learn how! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=- Yqk5cHXsko

Hands Only CPR Steps (Adult) Kneel down beside the person Do not sit back on your feet! This won t be a comfortable position, your knees will hurt The heel of one of your hands should be in the center of their chest, while your other hand is interlaced Hand should be in line with their nipples Only the heel of your hand should come in contact with their chest, fingers should not be on the chest at all Arms straight All of your weight should come down to the center of their chest Push down hard and fast Should be able to complete 100 compressions per minute Staying Alive will help you keep the beat

When to STOP Hands Only CPR Signs of life Breathing, conscious An AED becomes available and is in use Analyzing heart rhythm and/or delivering a shock Someone with higher training comes to take over EMS, medical personnel The scene becomes unsafe You are too exhausted to continue This does not mean you are tired and sore!

CPR Steps (with rescue breathing) Adult and Child Same steps we have already covered, from surveying the scene to starting chest compressions New parts: Perform only 30 chest compressions Still performing at a rate of 100/min though! Followed with 2 rescue breaths Breathing barriers Tilt the head back and watch the chest rise Continue this cycle of 30:2

CPR Steps (with rescue breathing) Infants Same steps we have already covered, from surveying the scene to starting chest compressions New parts: Checking for Responsiveness: Flick the bottom of their foot instead of tapping them on the shoulder Chest compressions Only using 2-3 fingers on one hand to complete chest compressions Place fingers in center of chest and press down Not pressing down as hard as you would for an adult and child Other hand: Place on the infants forehead Chest compressions and breathing Ratio of 30 compressions to 2 rescue breaths

What is an AED? How is it used? AED Where are our AEDs at Durant Road Middle School? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kiirbcctlm

AED Steps 1. Turn ON the AED 2. Listen and follow the directions. It will walk you through every step, beginning with checking for responsiveness. 3. Apply the pads: Upper right and lower left chest (pictures are on AED) Must be applied directly to skin (shirts must be removed) 4. Make sure you and anyone around is not touching the victim so the AED can analyze a heart rhythm 5. Shock the victim if advised Make sure no one is touching the person or else they will be shocked too! OUCH! 6. Begin CPR

AED Precautions Precaution 1. Jewelry 2. Water 3. Pregnancy 4. Hairy chest 5. Pacemaker/Implant able devices/medical patches 6. Cell Phones 7. Age/Weight restrictions Solution 1. Don t bother taking off, just make sure pads don t touch it 2. Dry the chest off, move person if in a puddle 3. Perfectly fine to use an AED, it won t harm the fetus 4. Apply pads 1 st to see if it will work, don t waste time shaving if you don t have to! 5. Don t let pads touch them 6. Should be at least 6 feet away to avoid interference with analysis 7. Not intended for anyone younger than 8 or less than 55lbs
