Velocity Boys Volleyball Club for 2017-18 Our Goal To form a volleyball club program primarily to enhance player and team development by competing against top club teams in our area. Similar to previous club seasons, we want to form three teams, one 18U and two 16U teams if feasible. We would start in early-september and end in mid-february, about two/three weeks before spring high school VB tryouts. We would practice 3 times (Tuesday & Thursday evenings and Sunday late afternoons) a week. Practices will be reduced to 1-2 times a week once tournaments start, and time slots will shift to later in the evenings during the weekdays. We will play a strong schedule with 8 weekend tournaments similar to previous season against top volleyball clubs in our region. > 2/3 double-day weekend tournaments (Sat & Sun) at the Palos Courts Power League > 1 regional qualifier tournament (Sat, Sun & Mon) at Chicago McCormick Place over MLK Holiday > 4/5 additional single-day local tournaments; all total about 40-45 matches and 40-42 practices Club Fees* $1,450 per new player (about 40-60% less than other clubs) $1,275 per returning roster player from 2016-17 Velocity club season (use existing uniform; new T-shirts) $1,150 per new 14- or 15-year-old on 16U team. *Based upon 12 players per team; might adjust higher if less than 12 to cover team expenses. The fees for new players will include a full uniform package (2 jerseys, shorts, long-sleeve hitting shirt, 3 T-shirts, backpack, kneepads and volleyball). Fees does not include any transportation cost, meals and parents entrance fees. Parents are responsible for driving players to and from all practices and tournaments. Players & Teams Ideally each team will have 11-12 roster players. Players on a HS fall sports team are allowed on our club team. Athletes can finished their HS fall season sport before attending Velocity club practices/matches full-time. Any player wishing to participate on a HS winter sports team and our club team at the same time will need to talk with our club director in advance of tryouts. Club Volleyball Q&As be an informed player! How many practices and matches will we play? Velocity boys program will hold 2-hour practices 3X a week in September and October. Once tournaments start, we will reduce our practices to 1-2 a week. Overall, we will have approximately 40-42 practices and 40-45 matches. In 2013-14 season, our 18U team played very well and advanced to playoffs in every tournament, and finished their season playing 55 matches. Where are Velocity practices held? All of our practices will be held conveniently at Niles West HS or Niles North HS. Last season all practices were held at North. Tryouts, cuts and rosters? Velocity will hold its tryouts on Tuesday, Sept 5, 6:30-9:00pm (registration at 6:00pm) at Niles West. We try to provide all athletes an opportunity to play club volleyball. In the past eight years, we have not make any cuts. We do hold the right to make cuts if needed to adjust the roster(s) to a manageable program. Our goal is to have 10-14 players per team, ideally 11-12. Why don t Velocity play at the St Louis Qualifier, or travel to play in another city? The St Louis tournament is too far away (6-hour drive one-way), plus the cost of 3-night hotel stay and travel does not justify participation when there are ample quality tournaments locally. Many clubs sign up for St Louis Qualifier as a fall-back tournament if they do not qualify for the Nationals at the Chicago Qualifier (Boys Winter Championships). How long is the boys club volleyball season at Velocity? We start with tryouts on the first Tuesday after Labor Day (September 5, 2017) and will end in mid-february, about 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the high school boys volleyball spring season. Where are the boys tournaments being held? Velocity will play at the Palos Power Series in Palos Heights, SYNC tourneys in Schaumburg, Adversity tourneys in Vernon Hills, and the Chicago Qualifier at McCormick Place. We might register for other tournaments within a 90-minute drive. Velocity will not schedule to play at any tournaments on the weekend prior to finals week in December. How do players get to practices and tournaments? Similar to other clubs, Velocity does not provide transportation for players to and from practices or tournaments. It is the responsibility of each family to arrange for travel. A team contact sheet with addresses and phone numbers will be provided to assist all families with transportation. Directions to tournaments will be provided via e-mails a few days in advance. What are club tournaments like? All of our tournaments are held on weekends, either on a Saturday or Sunday. Usually each day we will play 3 or more matches. Some one-day tournaments will have single-elimination playoffs after pool play. The Chicago Qualifier at McCormick Place will be held over MLK Holiday and matches will be held on 3 days Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Why doesn t Velocity offer a 17U or 15U boys team? Since all local tournaments available (except the Chicago Qualifier) are 18U and 16U, there isn t any benefit since all 17U teams will play in the 18U division and all 15U teams in the 16U division. Having a separate 17U or 15U team would be important only if we (players and parents) elect to qualify for Nationals. Can I play another sport during club volleyball season? Yes you can combining a high school fall sport (football or soccer) and club volleyball is possible and more conducive than a winter sport (basketball or wrestling) because majority of our tournaments will be held in winter months. It can be very difficult to play two sports at one time. Players should have an open and honest family discussion about time management and conflicts before our tryouts.

Our uniform package consists of 2 jerseys, 1 shorts, 1 long sleeve hitting shirt, backpack, Molten official game ball, knee pads, whistle and 3 T-shirts. Returning player s fee is about $175 less and will get new T-shirts. ** Our teams will play in the Chicago Qualifier, possibly all 3 Palos Power Series (double weekend tournaments), and 4-5 single day tournaments. Velocity will not play in the 3rd Palos Power Series if held on the weekend prior to high school final exams to assist student-athletes in their academic preparations. Our players will have an opportunity to play in approximately 40-45 matches (8-9 tournaments) and 40-42 practices. Taking in consideration our practices and tournaments played, and uniform package, Velocity is the most cost effective boys volleyball club in Illinois, bar none. Because we partner with District 219 for their facilities at a lower fee, we are able to pass on savings directly to players/families. Our structure is different from majority of other volleyball clubs and thus our goal is different to provide an affortable opportunity for our athletes to play club volleyball against the highest level of competitions in the best tournaments (Palos Power Series and Chicago Qualifier). All websites list the reason to chose their club is their coaching staff. We match our coaching staff against any other club: Alvin Lee 2nd year with Velocity; 4 years high school player; 4 years collegiate club player Kha Tran 9th year with Velocity; CAP 1 Certified; coached all levels from 14U-18U; CSL All-Conference player at Niles West George Wong 7th year with Velocity; coached all junior levels from 15U-18U and 20+ years at HS During your volleyball tryouts, you should ask the following questions: a) Who will be my coach and what is his coaching experience? b) Which team will I qualified for some clubs will have multiple teams/tiers within each age group? c) How many players are on our team and what position will I be able to play? d) What are the total fees and the list of tournaments? Remember almost all clubs will not include travel and hotel cost to out-of-town tournament(s) in their total fees.
