Remember that winter is the only time we run many of these courses, so take advantage of them when you see them on the schedule. New for this year will be a much-asked-for courses covering GPS & VHF. We are also going to change up the racing series clinics. Silver fleet boats will be included in the Friday Night Races next summer. In order to skipper in the races, you must attend one of the winter clinics. It is also highly recommended for crew! Don t let the showers bother you, there are always plenty of beautiful days of sailing this time of year. Nautical Terminator By Tony Johnson, Tradewinds Instructor Capes, points, and headlands, topics of a recent column, are difficult challenges for mariners. If you have been certified at the BKB level, perhaps you have already encountered a problem returning to Potrero Reach from Keller Cove, the open area between Point Richmond (the old ferry dock) and the Chevron Pier. Sailing upwind against an adverse current, you may have found it frustrating to try to turn the corner past the pilings, each tack seemingly depositing you right back where you started. This is the same issue, on a somewhat grander scale, that makes rounding Cape Horn, or any other cape, nearly impossible in the wrong conditions. In 1905 a full rigged ship named Susanna took 99 days to make it around Cape Horn, the longest rounding in history. Conquering such an obstacle, so that land is now between your present position and your previous one, is called doubling a cape or point. This term, one of the oldest in the literature of the sea, is first found in that grandfather of all sailing yarns, Homer s Odyssey. In book IX Odysseus reports that just as I doubled Malea s cape, a tide rip and the North Wind drove me way off course, and that is when his famous troubles began. Every sailor knows the anxiety of such roundings, and 3200 years later the Sailing Directions warn the mariner to approach this cape on the southern tip of the Peloponnesian peninsula with prudence, for the exact reasons Homer describes. Those with BCC certification may attempt to double Point Campbell on the NW corner of Angel Island or Bluff Point on the SE tip of Tiburon, sometimes tacking against the current on the way into Raccoon Strait. After BBC, your sailing area expands beyond the line between Peninsula Point at the tip of Belvedere and Point Stuart on Angel Island. You may fight a fickle breeze and a contrary current when attempting to get past either one. After ACC, you ll be rounding Point Bonita. Who knows what distant capes and headlands you may one day double. One of the wonders of our sport is that through the traditional terms, the ancient skills, and the timeless wind, sea, and geography that we share with the legendary sailors of olden days, we can relive some of the most stirring adventures in history--even if all we set out to do is to double Point Richmond. More Experience. 4

THE FRENCH CONNECTION June 1 14, 2011 Enjoy the warmth and sunshine of the longest days of the year in the south of France! A one-way journey from the vineyards of the Languedoc region to the beaches of the Mediterranean sea. We ll start this adventure by flying from San Francisco to Toulouse, France, where we ll check in to our 4-star hotel, and rest up from our flights. The next day, we ll have time to explore this historic city, and whether you wander the old quarter, filled with mid-18 th century buildings, discover the 13 th century university (one of the largest in France), or just wander the streets and shops and relax in a sidewalk café, you will quickly acclimate to the lifestyle here. Later in the afternoon we ll head down to the 14 th century town of Castelnaudary and board our waiting canal boats. Yes, it s true- although we are a sailing club, this is the only way to discover this region, so we are going to charter modern 42- to 48-foot canal boats. Any of us can skipper these simple boats down the famed Canal Du Midi, the shallow, narrow waterway (no sea sickness!) built in the 17 th century, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that stretches loosely east to west across the south of France. With 4 and 5 cabins, dual steering stations, galley and salon, and lots of sundeck space for watching everything go by, these are the ideal boats for our 11-day journey. We ll cover about 85nm of waterway, and pass through 62 locks along the way, but we wont double back, as this is a one-way cruise downstream all the way! And one piece of sailing gear you won t find on these boats is an anchor. You can stop anywhere you want, pound a stake into the earthen bank, and tie up for lunch or for the night. You can also moor along the quay of most villages, and be steps from the cafés, bakeries and wine and cheese shops that made this region famous. And instead of a dinghy and outboard, you can have a bicycle! Along the way we ll visit the circular country town of Bram; the imposing stone walled medieval city of Carcassonne; the ancient commercial wine port of Homps; Argens, with its 14 th century chateau; the ivy and pink flowers and majestic old bridge of the small village of Le Somail; Capestang, whose castle was the residence of the archbishop of Narbonne; Beziers, once a Roman city; and Port Cassafiéres, next to the beaches of the Med. 5

Here s a typical encounter... From beneath the colorful striped awnings of waterfront bakeries, butcher shops, and cafés, intoxicating aromas of seafood, garlic, and butter prevail. Should I buy black olives in salty oil or green olives swimming in brine? Café familial or Jacques Vabre arabica? Fresh goat cheese with local honey, or musky Roquefort with a crisp rosé from the Languedoc region? She asked me to pick a pâté. Avec champignons? Foie gras? Pâté de maison? Choices, choices. Plus there are the farmer s markets in every town, too. So much for a simple run to the grocery store! After leaving our boats at Port Cassafiéres, we ll head back to Toulouse and explore another day there, spending the night in the hotel. Finally, on the 14 th, we ll fly back home. So what s the deal? The trip costs just $2,950 per person, and it includes pretty much everything: Round-trip airfare from San Francisco (SFO) Two nights hotel in Toulouse 11 days and 10 nights aboard the yachts All ground transfers The only thing you ll need to buy there is food and drink, pitch in a few Euros for fuel, and maybe rent a bicycle to take on the boat with you. We welcome couples, families, and singles, and work very hard to ensure everyone has an absolutely great time. A deposit of $450 per person will hold your spot, with an additional deposit of $1500 due January 1, and the balance will be due March 15. Visa/MC and checks are fine. But space is limited on this trip, so don t delay- sign up today! For answers to your questions, or if you are ready to join us, email David directly at: davidkory@gmail.com, or call him at (925) 787-6893 The price listed includes all taxes and fuel surcharges as of August 1, 2010. If the world goes crazy again and the airlines add new fuel surcharges or invent new taxes, we may have to pass these on to you. I don t expect that to happen, but I have to warn you just in case. Cancellation policy: 6 months before departure, full refund. 90 days to 6 months, loss of deposits. Less than 90 days, no refund. 6

Tahiti Nov. 3-13, 2011 Unparalleled Paradise There is no place on this earth like Tahiti. The warm clear waters, white sand beaches, swaying palm trees, coral reefs surrounding idyllic lagoons it is the original inspiration for paradise. If you have dreamed of sailing and exploring a piece of the south seas tropics, where the warmest summer day is 95, and the coldest winter night is 75, where high tide is at noon and midnight every day of the year, where Polynesian traditions and culture mix with warm French baguettes and pastries in perfect harmony, this is the trip for you. We will first fly from Los Angeles to Papeete, Tahiti, where we ll spend 2 nights in a luxurious ocean front resort, recovering from our flight and acclimating to the tropical lifestyle. On Saturday morning we ll take a short 45-minute flight to Raiatea and board our waiting luxury yachts. Most everything we could need or want is already on board, from snorkeling gear to a fully functional galley to linens for the beds and a dinghy and outboard. We ll sail to a nearby village, where there is a nice supermarket, and provisioning is fun and exciting. After that, who knows? Perhaps a reach up to the crystalline waters and vanilla plantations of Tahaa, and snorkeling along the coral reefs and passes. Another day we might ride the warm tradewinds to legendary Bora Bora, anchoring within its incomparable lagoon, and where we can walk along the outer coral reefs, waves breaking just a few feet away from us and being absorbed by the coral. Perhaps a dinner at famous Bloody Mary s, where you leave your shoes at the door, dig your toes into the powder white sand, and choose your fresh fish for them to prepare however you like. Another day might take us to less-traveled Huahine, a favorite of many, for the local shops in Fare, and the remote anchorages and small local restaurants at the end of the lagoon. Perhaps South Raitea is also on the agenda, with its perfect snorkeling conditions, abandoned motus, and long white beaches ideal for strolling. Your time here will feel like a world away, the long sunny days stretching into warm starry nights. Peace, tranquility, a warm interaction with nature, good food and new friends... This is what a sailing vacation is supposed to be! 7

So what s the deal? The trip costs $3,295 per person, and it includes pretty much everything: Round-trip airfare from Los Angeles(LAX) Two nights hotel on Tahiti 8 days and 7 nights aboard the yachts All ground transfers A special Tahitian feast hosted by ASA. The only thing you ll need to buy there is food and drink. You ll also need to get yourself to Los Angeles, but we can help arrange that for you, too, if you like. How does it work? You are welcome to participate in sailing the boat, or you can just relax and enjoy the ride. If you have your ASA Bareboat certificate and would like to skipper one of the boats, that may be possible, too. We will have both monohulls and catamarans available, but the choices are first come, first served, so sign up soon! We welcome couples, families, and flexible singles, and work very hard to ensure everyone has an absolutely great time. David Kory, who has led sailing vacations to all corners of the globe, including many prior sailing vacations to Tahiti- knows the best local spots for anchoring, snorkeling, and eating, and is happy to share his insights with you. A deposit of $795 per person will hold your spot, with an additional deposit of $1500 due May 1, and the balance will be due August 15. Visa/MC and checks are fine, and payment plans are available, too. But space is limited on this trip, so don t delay- sign up today!
