OREGON COWBOY/WESTERN DRESSAGE ALLIANCE JUNE-JULY 2013 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 WWW.ORCWDA.ORG (503) 714-4325 or ORCWDA@GMAIL.COM MONTHLY NEWSLETTER definitely visit our Facebook page or our website to check out those. There are simply too many to list more than a few in our newsletter no kidding! Our own Kirk Morse will be letting us use his services for another WD clinic at the end of July, this time in conjunction with the Vernonia Ridge Riders. See below for more details on that. Welcome to Summer! Finally, the wonderful warm summer weather has arrived! My horses are all sleek after their baths and my tomatoes and strawberries are starting to come in. My Oregon rain tan is finally turning to something that looks like I won t glow in the dark. I love summer! Our new website is up and reasonably polished at this point. I hope you enjoy it. There s always something new so please check back often for updates: www.orcwda.org. We re working on a new logo for the group too, but it seems the sunny weather and the show season have distracted all of us from our computers, so it s still a work in progress. What a great excuse for not getting something done LOL! We have a ton of riding events for you to partake of this season so you should We also have a Cowboy Dressage oneday clinic that has just been put on the calendar, scheduled for September 21 st in Junction City, OR. Sara Breyman will be our guest clinician for this one. Sara teaches Western and Cowboy Dressage out of Monmouth, OR. More on that below as well. We had a terrific time at the Far West Morgan Regional show in Redmond, OR too, in spite of it being rather cold and rainy. The turnout for the Cowboy Dressage clinic and competition was fantastic! And we have more chapter formation meetings planned around the state for the fall. We ll keep you posted as we get those on the calendar. If anyone in WA wants to start a chapter, just drop me a line at the email above. We d love to have you onboard! Enjoy the sun and all the wonderful activities that summer always brings. I m off to the barn to play with my horses. I hope to ride with you soon! Julie Malick, President PAGE 1

Far West/Cowboy Dressage Show Recap The Far West Cowboy Dressage clinic and competition at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, OR were both a complete success! The rider turnout on the June 17 th clinic was more than expected. What was planned to be a morning s worth of activity happily took most of the day. The organizers gave riders a change to ride a dry run on a test of their choice after the instructional portion of the clinic in the morning. They had 15 riders, all of whom patiently waited for their turn to ride in front of Eitan, Lyn Moe and Garn Walker for a quick critique. It was a great opportunity for those who participated to fine tune their rides for the following day s competition. job as scribe (especially since it was her first time out), Candy Morasch, who did some gate keeping for us, Pamela Johnston for being willing to help in between rides, and John Moe and Wyatt Paxton, who came along for the ride and made themselves infinitely useful all weekend. And a big shout out to Marli Perry and all of the Far West folks who helped make the event a success. Thank you one and all! Rebecca and what Eitan calls the schtick AMHA Forms Tornado Relief Fund From a recent edition of NW Morgan List: The prize buckle for Far West The competition the following day was comprised of over 50 rides encompassing both the regular and Challenge Court tests, and we were treated to four really wonderful freestyle rides at the end of the day. It was incredible to watch! The belt buckle for High Point went to our ORCWDA member Rebecca Wirth and her wonderful Paint mare, Stardust s Ella Bay, who scooped the award with several wonderful test rides and capped the day off with a gorgeous freestyle ride using la garrocha. Way to go, Rebecca! Thanks again to all of our volunteers, including Carol Helton, who did an amazing SHELBURNE, VT- Like all of you, those of us here at the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) and American Morgan Horse Educational Charitable Trust are stunned by the images and reports of devastation coming out of Oklahoma. A fund has been established to assist with the relief and recovery efforts related to the tornados. These funds will be directed to specific local Moore, Oklahoma, organizations in need of funds or the American Red Cross. "Oklahoma holds a special place in our hearts as the host of the annual Grand National & World Champion Morgan Horse PAGE 2

Show each October," said AMHA Executive Director, Julie Broadway. "We would like to show them we are thinking of them during the aftermath of the recent tragic weather events." If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution, please mail your checks to AMHECT, 4066 Shelburne Rd, Suite 6, Shelburne VT 05482-OK Relief Fund. WDAA Announces Release of New Educational Test Books In conjunction with Dressage Illustrated, WDAA has released new Rider booklets for each of the tests now available to Western Dressage riders. Each booklet will include diagrams as well as the directive ideas for each test, to help the rider understand how each test is judged. There is also a Judge s book available, which describes in detail what to look for when judging each of the WD tests. All are sturdy enough for outdoor use. The rider booklets are $16.50 each plus shipping; the judge s book is $90 plus shipping. Ordering information may be found at http://www.dressageillustratedtest.com. Take Care with Your Equine Dewormer From Rogue Equine Hospital's website in Eagle Point, OR: Please be aware that dogs and cats should not be present when you are deworming your horses. We had a client call this week to tell us that their little Yorkie dog spent the weekend at the small animal emergency clinic being treated for a toxic exposure to Quest (moxidectin). A small drop of the gel was licked up by the dog before they could stop her, and within minutes she was obviously very ill. They rushed her to the emergency clinic and due to their prompt action she has recovered and is home now. Moxidectin, the active ingredient in Quest, and ivermectin, the active ingredient in many brand name equine dewormers can be very toxic to dogs and cats. The equine products contain levels of these compounds that are unsafe for small animals. It only takes a very small amount to be toxic to small animals. The signs of toxic exposure are drooling, dilated pupils, incoordination, and trembling which progresses to seizures, coma and eventually death unless the condition receives prompt treatment. When deworming your horses please keep your dogs and cats in the house and make sure the empty syringes are securely disposed of. If your dog is fond of eating horse poop, keep them out of the paddocks and pastures for several days. It is even possible for dogs to ingest toxic amounts by eating the manure of recently dewormed horses, although this is extremely rare. PAGE 3
