Sophomore Ekaterina Morozova leads the Jayhawks at the No. 1 singles position. Morozova challenged Notre Dame s No. 30 Kristy Frilling to a first-set tiebreaker and enters Wednesday s match at 1-1. Kansas leads the all-time series with the Roos, 3-0, includ ing a 7-0 win last season in Lawrence. Creighton, meanwhile, comes into Friday night s match with a 1-4 record, falling to Nebraska, Wichita State, Arkansas-Little Rock and Wyoming, while picking up its lone win against North Dakota. Leading the way for the Bluejays this season has been Lindsey Erickson, Anna Kirshenbaum, Mary Pat McMullan and Tess Reddin as each has recorded two wins for the squad. Creighton leads the all-times series with UMKC, 19-0, including a 5-2 home win last season. South Dakota enters its Saturday match against the Roos with an 0-3 record after dropping matches to Air Force, Seattle and Gonzaga. The Coyotes are led by their No. 1 singles player, Shadi Soleymani, as the sophomore has gone 2-1 to start the season. UMKC leads the all-time series, 2-1 after picking up a 7-0 victory last season. LAST WEEK The Roos suffered a trio of losses last weekend, falling to UTSA (5-2), Air Force (7-0) and Montana State (5-2). Leading the way for the squad was freshman Eva Dalvai, as the Strasbourg, France native scored two wins in singles action, defeating UTSA s Mariel Maffezolli at the No. 2 position and Montana State s Charlotta Hjalmarrson at the No. 1 spot. Jillian Yakominich also registered a pair of wins over the weekend, each coming against the Bobcats. In her singles match, Yakominich defeated Jennifer Coll at the No. 6 spot and teamed with Laura Bouet to defeat Ali Griffin and Lucy Fairbotham in doubles action. 2009-10 UMKC Women s Tennis Roster Player Ht. Head Coach: Kendell Hale Assistant Coach: Dante Cipulli Assistant Coach: Roberto Quintanilla FRESHMEN LEADING THE WAY After coming on strong during the fall season, freshman Laura Bouet, Eva Dalvai, and Suzan Lisenby are being heavily relied on in their inaugural season with the Roos. Overall, the trio has combined for 11 of the team s 14 singles wins and three of the four singles wins this spring. Bouet leads the way for the freshman as the Gap, France native has scored a team-high five wins in the 2009-10 season. The trio is also relatively strong in doubles action, as two of the team s three wins have included one of the first year players. ROOS PICKED FIFTH IN SUMMIT LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL The UMKC women s tennis program has been picked to finish fifth in The Summit League Preseason Poll in a vote of the league s nine head coaches. The Roos received 42 points, which was just three points out of third place. After finishing fifth in The Summit League in 2009, the squad will look to its four returning letterwinners and three promising freshmen to improve on that position. WICHITA ROOS The Wichita, Kan., pipeline continued for the UMKC women s tennis team, as the squad added a third member to the program from Wichita. Jessica Ball and Jillian Yakominich return for their sophomore seasons in Blue and Gold, while a third player - Suzan Lisenby - joins the team after being a four-time state tournament qualifier at Wichita Southeast High School. FRENCH CONNECTION UMKC will welcome in three freshmen to the mix this season, including two international players from France in Laura Bouet and Eva Dalvai. Bouet comes to Kansas City from Gap, France, while Dalvai hails from Strasbourg, France. In their first collegiate event, the duo combined for three of the squad s six wins. A LOOK BACK The Kangaroos posted a 5-13 overall record and a 4-4 mark in Summit League play in 2009. The five victories were the most for the program since the 1999-00 season, while the four league victories were the most in a single season in school history. ITA ALL-ACADEMIC HONOR The UMKC women s tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors for the second straight year in 2009. The award is given to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Additionally, Jillian Yakominich was named as an ITA Scholar Athlete following her freshman campaign. HEAD COACH KENDELL HALE Head Coach Kendell Hale is entering his third season as the head coach of the UMKC men s and women s tennis program. Hale has made great strides with the women s program in his first two years, as he helped the team snap their 58-match losing streak in 2008 before posting five victories in 2009. The five wins were the most for the program since the 1999-00 season. Before joining the UMKC coaching staff, Hale spent 11 years as the head coach at Rockhurst University, where he led the Hawks to nine NCAA Tournament appearances.
