016 NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL SWEET 16 Marc Lawrence s award-winning football selections are available all season long at: VegasINSIDER.com SMART BOX SWEET 16 RETURNEES: Swimming With Sharks! by Marc Lawrence With the 016 NCAA Tournament entering the SWEET 16 round, let s take a different perspective in analyzing the teams that have arrived. This one pertains specifically to teams that are returning to the SWEET 16 for the nd straight year. Do these experienced teams perform with aplomb or do they bomb? Let s take a peek. ALL HANDS ON DECK Much like last year, six teams return to the Round of this season. They include Duke, Gonzaga, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. According to our database, since 199, teams making a right-back appearance in the SWEET 16 are 77-8 SU but only 55-67- ATS in this round of the tourney. The cut-line, however, is often times the pointspread. That s confirmed by the fact that pick or favorites of 6 points or less are just - SU and 15-0 ATS (although -0 ATS last year). Gonzaga, North Carolina and Oklahoma find themselves failing to make the cut this year, with the Notre Dame-Wisconsin game currently sitting on the bubble. NOT QUITE A '10' Looking at it from a varied perspective, SWEET 16 returnees seem to struggle when arriving off a win of less than 10 points, going just 1-5 SU and 1-- ATS. This year finds Duke, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Wisconsin coming up short in the gene pool. And making matters worse, if any of these sweet tomatoes sport a high profile public-loving win percentage of.790 or greater on the season, they fall to 10- ATS. Not good news for the Sooners. SWEET 16 INCREDIBLE STAT No. 1 seeds in the round off BB SUATS wins are 17-0 SU and 1- ATS since 1991 if they scored less than 85 points in their last game (Kansas). SUB 7'S It s easy for teams to breathe a sigh of relief when they return to the for a nd straight season. Especially so when they take on not-so-stellar opposition (read: less-than.700 foes). In playing down to the level of this type of opposition, these returnees are a competent 1-6 SU but only 5 ATS. Don t be surprised to find Gonzaga torpedoed against the spread this Friday. (Note: both Notre Dame and Wisconsin square off with each team owning a sub. 700 win percentage). SWEET 16 AWESOME ANGLE PLAY ON any NCAA tournament team in the round if they upset a #1 seed as an underdog in the round. 16-LB SLEDGEHAMMER ATS W-L Record Since 1996: 1-0 (100%) SEEDY DEVELOPMENT As expected, #1 and # seeds fare the best in games as returnees, going 567 SU combined. To the spread, however, they are small money burners, going 5-7 ATS. Meanwhile, # or lower seed returnees are just 1- SU and 169- ATS. That s not good news for Duke, Gonzaga, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Even worse news for the Zags, though, is a 6 SU and 5- ATS mark in games when these # or lower seeds are facing a foe off a double-digit win. Make no mistake, when it comes to handicapping teams in the SWEET 16, the winners will likely be the better-qualified teams that have been there-and-done that. Or those who know how to keep a ship afloat, if you know what I mean... page www.vegasinsider.com

016 NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL SWEET 16 MARCH -6 KFC Yum! Center Louisville, KY THU / SOUTH REGIONAL OPEN CLOSE FINAL 5 Maryland (7-8) 1 Kansas (-) -6.5 Miami Fla (7-7) Villanova (1-5) -.5 (1) Kansas over (5) Maryland by 10 The, or should we say the ACC Invitational, tips off in the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville with the Hurricanes and Wildcats getting the first dance. However, it s this nightcap that may require some rhythm (i.e., fast dancing) as the Jayhawks are scoring 8.0 PPG on 9.6% shooting while the Terps are straight shooters from both the field (8.8) and the charity stripe (77.1). Those who like it slow may beg to differ as the Jayhawks along with Gonzaga top the remaining participants in Defensive Field Goal Percentage at 9.7%. (Remarkably, that ranks only rd in the nation which tells us either college coaches are taking a page out of the NFL playbook or the Steph Curry posters hanging on every dorm room wall are taking effect). KU also tops the loop in scoring margin (1.1), making it no surprise that they have held 0+ point leads in the first half of both tourney games. And while the Big Ten is -0 SUATS versus the Big 1 in this round since 001, our Fred Astaire-like database reminds us: No. 1 seeds off back-to-back SUATS tourney wins are 5- SU and 19-8 ATS, including the 17-0 SU and 1- ATS INCREDIBLE STAT tightener outlined on page. We also must point out that Kansas has topped the century mark on five different occasions this season and that doesn t bode well for Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon, who is 570- ATS in his career when his teams surrender 70 or more points. Thus, we think you ll agree that the Jayhawks waltz into the. Lay it if you play it. () Miami Fla over () Villanova by Speaking of the Canes, they delivered our 5* Tournament Play of the Year with last Saturday s win over Wichita State thanks to a heavenly performance by senior PG Angel Rodriguez. One of six ACC squads ( SU thus far) to reach Week Two, Miami has our database in a bit of a tizzy. You see, Big East teams (Nova) in the Big Dance are just -6 SU and -7 ATS in games off back-to-back SUATS wins when taking on an ACC entry. However, ACC clubs are a mediocre 18-0 SU and money-burning 11-6 ATS versus foes off a SUATS win in this round. Ugh! Thus, it s time to take a look at the coaches and we find Nova head man Jay Wright - SU and 1-5 ATS versus ACC foes since bowing out to North Carolina in the 01 Dance (also fell to NC State in the nd round of this event last year) while Miami s Jim Larranaga can lean on his victory over Wright and the Wildcats in the opening round of the 011 tournament when he coached George Mason. And since this is the first since 006 (and only the second in the last 5 years) where you won t find a favorite of 7 or more points, it looks to us like this is one of a handful of games where the wrong team may be on the left side of the column. Hence, we say take what you can get as this victory should be finger-lickin good for the wily Larranaga especially if he grabs a bottle of red with Louisville head coach Rick Pitino at his Italian restaurant (if you get our drift). THU / MARCH -6 Honda Center Anaheim, CA WEST REGIONAL OPEN CLOSE FINAL Duke 1 Oregon Texas A&M Oklahoma (50) (0-6) (8-8) (7-7) -.5.5 () Duke over (1) Oregon by 1 The scene shifts to the Honda Center in Anaheim for the West Region semis and while it would take an SUV to house all of Oregon s unique jerseys (we re being nice just in case we find out we re long-lost relatives of Phil Knight), the Civic has more than enough room to house Coach K s 6-deep squad. In fact, if the Blue Devils didn t hit this contest on plenty of rest (played early Saturday while the Ducks played late Sunday), we might accord Oregon some love. However, we still can t ignore the fact that the Dukies have dominated the Pac of late, going 11- SU and 9-5 ATS, including 5 SU in this event. Nor can we turn a blind eye to our mean machine which notes: No. seeded dogs of less than 8 points are 9- ATS in this round since 006 while No. 1 seeds off an ATS loss are 158- ATS, including -5 SU and 1-8 ATS as favorites of 5 points or fewer. And, of course, there s the huge coaching disparity with Oregon s Dana Altman owning the same amount of wins as Dana Delany or the Altman Brothers (take your pick). Thus, it s Ore- Gone for the Pac as the ACC continues its 016 dominance. Another must take. () Texas A&M over () Oklahoma by Unless you had Northern Iowa on the money line (+80) in search of a Sunday night bailout (which, by the way, you wouldn t have needed if you had joined us over the weekend: -, +7.7 units on late phones), how can you buck a team (A&M) that rallied to win its last game after trailing by 1 points with seconds to play? YOU CAN T especially with the SMART BOX calling for its opponent s head and the Aggies playing with house money. In addition, favorites off a pair of ATS failures in the first two rounds of this tourney are just -9 ATS when facing a No. 6 or higher seed, including 1-6 ATS versus a.750 or greater foe. Series history also sides with the Agriculturalists who are 6- ATS when riding the Schooner. We can certainly dig that especially knowing the Aggies own a stellar 7- ATS mark in this event when facing sub.80 opposition. The feeling here is that heartbreaking loss to Kentucky in the SEC final should have A&M more than prepared tonight in Anaheim. Hield our advice take the points in another False Favorite Special. MARCH 5-7 Wells Fargo Center Philadelphia, PA FRI /5 EAST REGIONAL OPEN CLOSE FINAL 5 Indiana 1 North Carolina 7 Wisconsin 6 Notre Dame (7-7) (0-6) () (1) -.5 Pk page www.vegasinsider.com

016 NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL SWEET 16 (1) North Carolina over (5) Indiana by Seldom have we seen a team pay such a big price as Indiana did for getting bounced out of its conference tournament in the first round. That loss to Michigan caused the Big Ten regular season champ Hoosiers to be under-seeded and locked into a bracket for a Game Two matchup with Kentucky, a contest usually reserved for the or. Despite getting no love from the selection committee, though, Tom Crean s team survived to reach today s game against the top-seeded Tar Heels. Only No. 1 overall seed Kansas brought more wins into the field than opening-day opponent Chattanooga, and IU s 99-7 destruction of the Mocs prompted UTC coach Matt McCall to say, They re going to make a really deep run into this thing. McCall proved to be a prophet as Indiana forced Kentucky into 16 turnovers and stopped the Wildcats, 7-67, to move on to today s game in Philly between two of the highest-scoring squads left in the field. North Carolina s tourney M.O. has been to play a close first half, then turn on the afterburners following intermission: the Tar Heels two wins over Florida-Gulf Coast and Providence saw UNC pull away and win the second half by identical 15-point margins. But while North Carolina ranks as the top team in the in Assists Per Game (17.8) and Rebound Margin (8.) ask Michigan State how being the top-rated team in key categories worked out this tournament, the Heels have been guilty of lengthy defensive lapses that kept lesser opponents within striking distance. Such a lapse could be fatal tonight as the Big Ten has dominated the ACC in this round, going 9- SU and 8- ATS since 199. In the coaching matchup, Carolina s Roy Williams owns a lethargic 61 ATS mark in his last 17 battles with Big Ten foes when off a SUATS win, while Indiana s Crean has gone 6- ATS versus No. 7 higher seeded teams in this tourney, including ATS versus greater than.88 opposition. The Hoosiers have enough size down low to counter the foul-prone Carolina bigs and IU guard Yogi Ferrell has caught fire at just the right time (8 points and 1 assists in two wins). The icing on the cake is a recommendation from our very own SMART BOX to fade the Heels and when the square talks, we listen. Can t call for the outright upset but grabbing the points with a determined bunch of Hoosiers is the way to go here. (6) Notre Dame over (7) Wisconsin by Notre Dame s win over Duke in the ACC Tournament was quickly forgotten after the Irish were squashed by North Carolina, 78-7, so few expected Mike Brey s boys to rebound in the Big Dance with a win over play-in foe Michigan. And let s face it: the Dame was ready to go down against Stephen F. Austin last Sunday until unheralded Rex Fluke Pflueger tapped in a missed shot with just 1.5 seconds left his only made field goal since March 5th. Wisconsin has taken a similar path to this game, getting booted in the first round of the Big Ten tourney by Nebraska, then somehow eking out a pair of SU underdog wins in NCAA Tournament games they clearly should have lost (scored only 16 points in first half against Pittsburgh and trailed by 9 points with 6 minutes left versus Xavier). What makes Bucky s run even more amazing is the fact that veteran HC Bo Ryan stepped down on December nd and handed the reins to Greg Gard, and by mid-january the team that had tangled with Duke in last year s National game was floundering at 9-9. Both squads are returnees from last season s Sweet 16 but our SMART BOX call on this game between two defensive titans is incomplete at the moment, pending the status of whichever team settles in as the favorite (most sportsbooks currently list the contest as a Pick). Until that happens, we ll side with a Notre Dame outfit that commits the fewest fouls per game of any team in the nation (15.) versus a Wisky squad that is the s weakest in Assists Per Game (11.). Granted, the Badgers can claim a glimmering 16- ATS mark versus ACC foes, and like Indiana above, the Big Ten has dominated the ACC in this round (9- SU and 8- ATS since 199). The deal-breaker comes courtesy of our database: teams in this round, off a win-no-cover, are 15- SU when taking on a foe off a SU underdog victory, including 6-0 SU versus greater-than No. 6 seeded opponents. We also believe that having Ryan on the sidelines would have been a huge edge for the Badgers, but having to go with rookie Greg Gard leaves us leaning with the Irish. Look for Notre Dame s sticky D to deny Wisconsin sharpshooter Bronson Koenig any late-game heroics here as Brey and company move one step closer to the Final Four. FRI /5 MARCH 5-7 United Center Chicago, IL MIDWEST REGIONAL OPEN CLOSE FINAL Iowa State (1) 1 Virginia (8-7) -5 11 Gonzaga 10 Syracuse (8-7) () -.5 (1) Virginia over () Iowa State by 10 Both squads feature can t miss NBA prospects in UVA s Malcolm Brogdon (the ACC Player of the Year) and Iowa State team leader Georges Niang, a rare th-year senior who s averaging 0. PPG. But today s matchup is clearly a numbers game. The Cyclones have been dangerous dogs this season when limiting opponents to fewer than 80 points, posting an impressive 19- SU and 1- ATS record. But when ISU fails to score at least 7 in this event, they fizzle out to a puny -9 SU and 5-8 ATS mark. If you re one of those that believe in the adage defense wins championships, check this out: as of March 1, Virginia ranked second nationally behind departed Wichita State in scoring D, allowing just 59.5 PPG (Iowa State ranked #8!) so it s safe to say the Clones won t come anywhere near reaching the all-important 7-point mark against the Cavaliers. And while Virginia may own the weakest rebounding team of the remaining teams (.0), our all-knowing database counters with this nugget: No. 1 seeds in the round who failed to beat the spread in their previous game are 10 SU and 8- ATS as single-digit favorites versus sub.750 foes. In fact, the only thing holding us back from making an even bigger play is the current 5-point line as Sweet 16 No. 1 seeds off an ATS loss are just -5 SU and 1-8 ATS as favorites of 5 or fewer points. If someone should tempt you to take a money-line shot with Iowa State, remember that the Cyclones are a disastrous 0-7 SU in their last seven tourney appearances versus No. 1 or seeds. We ve seen high-scoring teams smothered by the Cavs defense enough times this season to pass on the flash and go with the grind-it-out Wahoos. UPSET SPECIAL (10) Syracuse over (11) Gonzaga by This marks the first time in NCAA tournament history that 15 of the 16 teams are from Power 5 Conferences yet we ve still got a matchup between double-digit seeds this late in the Dance. That s because Syracuse and Gonzaga have both caught fire in a big way: the Orange outscored their first two foes by 19 and 5 points, while the Zags almost duplicated that feat with a 16-point win and a -point win. It s also a showdown between two of the college game s best head coaches, Jim Boeheim and Mark Few. While we ve got the utmost respect for the Gonzaga head coach, this is Boeheim at his best 8-9 SU versus a lowerseeded foe in this tourney, including 0-5 SU versus No. 10 or lower seeds, with only ONE LOSS by more than points. It s fitting that Boeheim, like us a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, has taken a team that most talking heads thought should ve been relegated to the NIT and is once again putting on a masterful Brilliant Disguise during March Madness. With the Spokane Bulldogs currently on a 7-0 SU and 6-0 ATS run, the linesmakers knew they had to up the price from the and --point lines carried by the Zags against Seton Hall and Utah, and we ll gladly take the gift. After all, our SMART BOX forewarns that returnees like Gonzaga may be 1-6 SU in this round when facing a sub.700 foe but they re only 5 ATS (it s called playing down to the level of the opposition). Yes, the Bulldogs are the best free throw shooting team left in the tournament (75.8) but Syracuse was whistled for only 9 fouls in its 75-50 blowout of giant-killer Middle Tennessee on Sunday. And if the Orange s ATS mark as dogs off a win versus.75 or greater foes this season still leaves you wanting more, there s always The Clincher: No. 10 or lower seeds returning to the round for a nd straight year are 0-5 SUATS since 1990.
