Page 1 of 5 60ê SPORTS GIRLS LACROSSE Oak Park earns top seed in Northern Division girls lacrosse playoffs for third straight season \ ] Y 0 By Joe Curley of the Ventura County Star Yesterday 3:37 p.m. Three-time defending finalist Oak Park High (12-3) earned the top seed in the Northern Division girls lacrosse playoffs for the third straight season Sunday, when the Los Angeles chapter of U.S. Lacrosse announced its Southern Section postseason field. The Eagles are undefeated against Northern Division opposition this season, outscoring its eight opponents, 133-38, and spending the entire season atop the coaches poll. "The girls have worked hard to earn that spot," Oak Park coach Courtney Schneck said. "But we know that we have a difficult schedule in front of us." Led by seniors Morgan Shorts (49 goals, 13 assists), Ania Brown (40 goals, 16 assists) and Julia Gilliam (32 goals, 25 assists), Oak Park is 68-18-1 overall over the past four seasons with three straight trips to the Northern Division finals, but the Eagles are still searching for their first championship. "There's a target on our back," Schneck said, "so we have to play at our best and be prepared for every game." Marmonte League co-champions Agoura and Thousand Oaks were seeded No. 4 and No. 8, respectively.
Page 2 of 5 Agoura (12-4), led by junior Lauren Harrison (87 goals) and senior center Kinta Schott, will host No. 13 Downey (12-4) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Thousand Oaks (13-4) will host No. 9 Mira Costa (8-8) at Westlake High at 5 p.m. "We wrote it on the whiteboard to start the season," Thousand Oaks coach Mike Ward. "Our goal this year was to make playoffs. The Lancers have turned around a program that won just two games in each of the last two seasons, "You have to start from the bottom," Ward said, "which is where I thought we were.... As the season went on, we got better and better." The Simi Valley rivals could meet in Thursday's quarterfinals, if No. 10 Royal (14-4) and No. 15 Simi Valley (9-9) win on the road at No. 7 Palos Verdes (7-6) and No. 2 Chaminade (15-3), respectively. Tuesday's winners advance to Thursday's quarterfinals. Saturday's semifinals and next week's finals will be hosted by Glendale and Mira Costa highs, respectively. Northern and Southern Division champions meet for the Southern Section championship on May 14. Additionally, Westlake, Oaks Christian and La Reina were selected for a Division II postseason tournament, a consolation for teams not selected in the playoff field.
