The Chiefs fi nished the regular season with a 10-6 record and captured their fi rst AFC West championship since 2003. Kansas City is a member of the NFL s postseason dance for the fi rst time since 2006. The Chiefs last hosted a Wild Card Game at Arrowhead in 93. The Chiefs enter the postseason after compiling a 7-1 regular season mark at Arrowhead. Under Head Coach Todd Haley, the Chiefs have made a sixgame improvement in the win column compared to 2009, the biggest one-year turnaround in team history. Haley is the only active head coach to win division titles with fi ve different franchises during his NFL coaching tenure. The Ravens concluded the regular season with four consecutive wins to fi nish 12-4, earning their third straight postseason berth under John Harbaugh. Kansas City claimed the NFL s rushing title for the fi rst time since 95, averaging a league-best 164.2 ypg. The Chiefs were even better at Arrowhead, registering an NFL-high 182.9 rushing ypg at home, 30.4 ypg more than secondplace Houston (152.5). Pro Bowl RB Jamaal Charles (1,467 yards) fi nished second in the league in rushing and averaged 6.38 yards per carry in 2010, the second-best seasonal tally by a RB in NFL history behind only Browns RB Jim Brown (6.40 in 63). Charles and RB Thomas Jones (896 yards) combined for 2,363 rushing yards, the fourth-highest mark in NFL history by a pair of teammates each owning at least 500 yards. Only Pittsburgh (9) permitted 14 points or less in more games than Kansas City (8) and Baltimore (8) in 2010, while only the N.Y. Jets (13.4) and Pittsburgh (13.8) permitted fewer points per game at home than Kansas City (14.8). LB Derrick Johnson led the Chiefs with 147 tackles, while LB Tamba Hali ranked second in the NFL with 14.5 sacks. The Ravens ranked third in the NFL in scoring defense (16.9 ppg) and were fifth in rushing defense (93.9 ypg). QB Matt Cassel will make his postseason debut for the Chiefs after producing a franchise-record +20 TD/INT differential (27 TDs/7 INTs) to rank second in the NFL behind only Patriots QB Tom Brady (+32). Pro Bowl WR Dwayne Bowe (1,162 yards, 15 TDs) became the fi rst member of the Chiefs to ever pace the NFL in TD receptions. VS. CHIEFS HEAD COACH - TODD HALEY Todd Haley was named the 11th head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs on February 6, 2009 and is in his second year leading the Chiefs. Haley is in his 16th season in the NFL in 2010 and his 14th season as an NFL coach after beginning his career as a scouting assistant with the N.Y. Jets in 95. Haley joined the Chiefs after a two-year stint as Arizona s offensive coordinator (2007-08), helping the Cardinals reach Super Bowl XLIII as the club won its first division title since 75. Under Haley s direction, the Cardinals ranked third in the league in scoring as Arizona registered a franchise-record 427 points in 2008. The Cardinals also threw a team-record 32 TD passes in 2007. Haley has won five division titles with five different NFL teams. He is the first head coach in Chiefs history to win a division crown in his second season at the helm of the franchise. He served as passing game coordinator/wrs coach under Bill Parcells with Dallas (2004-06) after beginning his career under Parcells with the N.Y. Jets ( 97-00). Harbaugh spent the 10 seasons prior to being the Ravens head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles ( 98-07). It was the Ravens who delivered the final two blows on the scoreboard to secure a 38-24 victory over the Chiefs at M&T Bank Stadium. A one-yard TD plunge by Ravens RB Willis McGahee with 0:31 seconds left sealed the win after the Ravens took a 31-24 lead with 2:06 left in the game as Baltimore QB Joe Flacco connected with WR Mark Clayton for a 31-yard TD, one of Flacco s three TD tosses on the day. Kansas City struggled to move the ball offensively early in the contest and the Ravens kept the Chiefs defense on the field for much of the day. Baltimore owned a huge advantage in time of possession, holding the ball for 39:49 compared to 20:11 for Kansas City. Baltimore was first on the scoreboard after constructing a nine-play, 54-yard drive capped by a 44-yard K Steve Hauschka FG, putting the Ravens up 3-0. After a another three-and-out series by the Chiefs, Flacco scrambled to buy time before finding McGahee in the left flat for a three-yard TD extending the Baltimore lead to 10-0 with 2:04 left in the first quarter. A 57-yard punt by P Dustin Colquitt following KC s fourth possession pinned the Ravens at their own nineyard line. The Chiefs defense forced Baltimore to go three-and-out. S Jon McGraw then turned the momentum in Kansas City s favor, blocking P Sam Koch s punt and recovering the ball in the end zone to cut the Ravens lead to 10-7 with 10:09 left in the first half. After converting several successful third downs, the Ravens next drive stalled. A 41-yard FG attempt by Hauschka went wide left, leaving the score 10-7 in favor of Baltimore at intermission. Kansas City s defense then came up with a big play on the Ravens opening possession of the second half. On third and nine from the Kansas City 33-yard line, LB Derrick Johnson intercepted a Flacco pass and returned it 70 yards to the Baltimore six-yard line. Two plays later, QB Brodie Croyle who was starting in place of an injured QB Matt Cassel found WR Dwayne Bowe in the back of the end zone to capitalize on the turnover giving the Chiefs a 14-10 lead with 8:52 left in the third quarter. Baltimore responded as Flacco orchestrated an 11-play, 64-yard TD drive that was capped with a nineyard TD to TE Todd Heap, giving the Ravens a 17-14 lead. Croyle came right back, hitting WR Mark Bradley for a 50-yard strike. That play set up K Ryan Succop, who drilled a 53-yard FG on his first NFL attempt, the longest make by a Chiefs rookie since K Jan Stenerud hit a 54-yarder in 67. Succop s FG tied the score at 17-17. Flacco marched his squad down the field again. FB Le Ron McClain dove into the end zone for a one-yard TD to put the Ravens back up 24-17 with 8:10 remaining. A roughing the passer penalty helped keep Kansas City s next drive alive, giving the Chiefs a first down at their own 43-yard line. Three consecutive completions put the Chiefs at the Ravens 10-yard line. Croyle then found TE Sean Ryan who dove into the end zone for his first NFL score to tie the game at 24-24 with 5:21 to play. Flacco and company moved the ball to the Kansas City 35-yard line before connecting with Clayton on a post route for a 31-yard TD, giving Baltimore a 31-24 lead with 2:06 left in the game. After the touchdown the Chiefs failed to convert on a fourth and 18. The Chiefs surrendered 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter as Oakland claimed a win in the regular season finale. Kansas City s defense recorded 4.0 sacks, including 2.5 from LB Tamba Hali, who finished the season with a career-high 14.5 sacks. RB Jamaal Charles registered 87 yards on the ground with one TD. The Raiders won the toss and chose to defer. Kansas City was forced to punt on its first possession. Oakland s first drive ended abruptly when Chiefs LB Jovan Belcher forced a WR Darrius Heyward-Bey fumble on the Raiders first play. LB Derrick Johnson recovered the ball at the Raiders own 17-yard line, setting KC up in the Red Zone. Four plays later K Ryan Succop put a 30-yard field goal attempt through the uprights, giving the Chiefs an early 3-0 lead. Each team went punt for punt as the first quarter concluded. Oakland s offense found rhythm in the second quarter and slowly worked its way into Chiefs territory. QB Jason Campbell hit WR Jacoby Ford on a quick screen, racing 35 yards down the sideline to Kansas City s six-yard line. Three plays later Campbell found WR Chaz Schilens in the end zone for a six-yard TD that gave the Raiders a 7-3 advantage. Oakland K Sebastian Janikowski tacked on a 38-yard field goal, pushing the Raiders lead to 10-3 at the intermission. The Raiders were first to touch the ball in the second half. On fourth and three the Raiders came up a yard shy, giving the ball back to KC at its own 36. Four plays later Charles rumbled 47 yards on a handoff, moving the Chiefs to Oakland s eight. Charles finished the job when he trotted into the end zone from five yards out tying the score at 10-10. Oakland responded with a touchdown drive of its own as RB Michael Bush scampered 26 yards up the middle for a TD giving the Raiders a 17-10 lead. The teams exchanged punts to open the fourth quarter. With 11:45 to play in the contest Raiders P Shane Lechler pinned KC at its own three-yard line. On third and 11 from the Chiefs own two, Cassel fired a pass intended for McCluster, but was intercepted by Raiders S Michael Huff, who returned it to the Chiefs 10-yard line. On the next play from scrimmage, Ford rushed 10 yards around the left end into the end zone, pushing Oakland s lead to 24-10 with 11:16 remaining. On the ensuing possession, penalties forced the Chiefs into a third and 30 at their own 20. Cassel s pass was picked off by CB Stanford Routt who returned it for a 22-yard TD, advancing Oakland s lead to 31-10 with just over nine minutes remaining. On Kansas City s final possession QB Tyler Palko took the helm to close out the game. Palko and company moved quickly into striking distance, but couldn t put any points on the board, making the final count 31-10. GAME NOTES The Chiefs finished the year with 14 giveaways, with six fumbles lost and eight INTs, tying as the third-lowest seasonal totals in team history.
