President s Message Snoqualmie Bait Company has sent us samples of their egg clusters to hand out. One pack each person that shows up till they are gone. Also information and business cards for Snoqualmie. *Association of NW Steelheaders has decided to take the governor's direction and vote NO on Stop Gillnetting Measure 81. I told Bill Kremers we have members that have worked hard to get this on the Nov ballot. How do we explain voting no now?? Bill Kremers answered with the following reply: Bob, tell these guys that Measure 81 accomplished it's goal. It got the governor and the government to act and do the right thing. So their work is much appreciated, they did the right thing. If they had not helped we would still be in the same situation we have been for over 50 years. With the action of the governor we will now have the commercial fishing completely off the main Columbia in 3 years. They only get 30% of the quota next spring, then 20%, then 10%. This will mean more angling days, better fishing and better passage for the ESA fish. Also now Washington is on board, something that would not have happened with Measure 81. One last thing Measure 81 would have permanently allowed commercial fishing on the main Columbia (just not gill nets). This would screw up everything and put the whole system in the courts. Now groups can spend their money on fishery issues, not expensive political advertizing. The buoy 10 fishing for most has been one of the best years. Lots of Chinook were caught. Coho run is down from previous years but a fair number of Coho were caught to get a complete limit. Arlene and I were invited by a friend to go along on a guide trip Aug 21 with guide Cody Herman - one of the hosts of Outdoor GPS. Cody did an awesome job. We hooked four salmon and landed three. Tue was a tough day. We got our first Coho within 15 minutes of fishing. The tide changed and we didn't get our next three takes till 2 pm. Monday Aug 20 Cody had hooked 17 and landed 13. They had to release Chinook and one was estimated at 34 pounds. They already had their Chinook limit of one each. One of the problems with a one Chinook limit and most of the hooked fish were Chinook. Coho were hard to come by some days. I talked with Willy Fox and Derek Clare who spent time guiding out of Astoria. Both did real well catching fish for their clients. You can even sign up to become a member yourself! It s easy, and membership is free. The web address is: http://www.meetup.com/nw-steelheading-group/ The goal of the website is twofold: First, we wanted a way to list all of our Steelheaders events, volunteer opportunities, and fishing events, so you can access this information quickly and easily. Second, we wanted a tool that would help us reach out to new (or experienced) fisherman and introduce them to the Association of Northwest Steelheaders. So give the website a look, or better yet sign up. Meet some new folks and help support new anglers looking to learn more about catching fish. Cheers! Jeff Hernandez CLASSIFIEDS Placing Classified Ads If you have a piece of fishing, hunting, or camping gear you are looking to sell or swap, contact: NewbergSteelheaders@yahoo.com Placing a classified ad in our newsletter is free of charge to current Newberg Chapter Steelheaders! Fishing Report and Pictures: Arlene and I went out of Willamette Park Thursday May 31. We hooked and released a nice native Spring Chinook. That was it for the day. Talked to Willy Fox who has been guiding down river. He hooked two Spring Chinook. Willy has been hooking two fish just about everyday he goes out. Kokanee and other fishing has been good. See ODFW Recreation Reports for area you want to fish. Another good idea is to call tackle shop or resort where you want to fish. We fished out of Roger's Landing Wednesday. The river had come up and looked like it came up even more and got murky before we left. No bites at all. Lots of fish over the falls. Fishing usually isn't as good with the river rising as it is on the drop. We fished Kwikfish, Maglip 3.5 & 4.5, spinner and spinner with prawn.
