It s 12 pages long I think this needs a table of contents OMG! Anyway, here s a list of what s in this newsletter: Season opening party Paintball game Registration Guppies Guppy helpers Practice Practice times this week Practice Options June; # of kids in each age group May Meets Volunteers for Hurricane meets Reimbursement forms Spirit Buddies Yard Signs Team Spirit Wear/Towels/ New Sleeveless Shirt Teen Activity Dining Privledges/Party on the Piazza Parking Private Lessons Season Opening Party The season opening party is this Saturday, May 19 from 4-7pm. Most of you should have received an email invitation to the party. Please respond and let us know if you are coming. This will help us plan for lifeguards, food, soda and paper goods. We would like everyone to bring an appetizer, snack or treat to share. There will be games and prizes for all kids and parents! Wear your suit, bring a towel and sun screen, an adult beverage or 12, come prepared to have fun! And I know there will be family conflicts for almost everyone on Saturday, but most activities should be over with by 6pm so you can drop by. My son, Alex may have a baseball game that afternoon. And my daughter, Sarah has a swim meet starting at 1:30. So we will be in at least 2 different places that day too! So come early and leave early if you have warm-ups at 7am the next day, or come later if you are busy all afternoon. We want to say Hi! And we may stay past 7pm if the kids are having fun so drive by and check it out. Paintball Game/Day/War? Several kids have told me they would like to have a swim team day at the Paintball Center, so we are fitting it into the schedule on July 3. However, Groupon, has a deal where you can buy an all day pass for half price, $22. It includes equipment rental, air and 500 paintballs. This is a really good deal and makes this activity affordable. Here is a link to the deal. There is only 1 day left to get this deal so act now. I have already bought it for my son and Coach Gene. For some reason, Molly didn t want to go on this particular outing http://www.groupon.com/deals/pbc-paintball-park- 1?c=title&s=body&division=greenville&utm_source=newsletter&sid=11173244&utm_medium=email&date =20120513&utm_campaign=pbc-paintball-park-1&utm_content=alldeals_greenville&p=1&addxe=Q0hJUEtBVEBDSEFSVEVSLk5FVA==&user=5c180728425ff61005aef114 3eacf0c52e48d45fff3b0a8ed75a4c9275a9edd9

We will need to organize car pools and chaperones (more than Gene). Any parents or older siblings that would like to go with the kids, please notify me. Registration We are still accepting applications for swim team families until May 25 for the Hurricane team, and June 6 for the Guppy team. Tell your friends and neighbors to come join us. Our current swim team families are the best promoters of our team!! Guppies WELCOME to HTCC's 2012 Swim Team Guppy Season!!! My name is Damaris Collier and I, along with Mary Ellen Bradley, will be this season's Guppy Directors. This will be my 5th year with Holly Tree CC. I have 4 children (Danielle-12; Brooke-11; Rachel-8 and RJ-5 (he's my Guppy)). Mary Ellen has 3 children (Anna Rose-9; Chloe-7 and Elliott-5 (he's her Guppy!)). This is Mary Ellen's 3rd year at HTCC. Together, we look forward to seeing some of our old friends and making new ones, creating some fantastic memories and having lots and lots of fun!! Speaking of fun...we are planning some activities throughout the season for our Guppies. However, if you have any ideas that you would like to contribute, we'd be very happy to hear them and have your help with them!!! You don't have to worry about volunteering. Anything you offer to do, you will never have to do alone. A couple of fun activities I've thought of are: Meeting out for lunch; Ice Cream Social (whether out or at the cabana); Creating some "Welcome" Banners for our "guests" before a home meet...and my mind is still working on fun activities!! This season's Meets have been scheduled and they are as follows: June 9 Riverwalk AT HTCC June 16 HTCC @ Stonehaven June 23 HTCC @ Pelham Falls (Salt water pool...swimmers will need to warm up to get used to it) June 30 Spaulding Farms AT HTCC All of our meets begin at 9 a.m. We ask that our swimmers be there by 8:45 to warm up and get our line ups ready. EVERYONE at the Guppy Meets is a WINNER and receives a ribbon after each meet. It's ALL about FUN, learning about the different strokes,

competition and being part of a team. Cheering for one another and being proud of each other's accomplishments. We will need volunteers for Timers and Lane Parent for each meet. 3-4 for each Meet. We promise...you will NOT miss your child swimming if you volunteer, as you will be front AND center. We make sure to put the child in their parents lane. In addition to the above mentioned, we'll also need snack people for each meet. Once we know exactly how many Guppies we have in the team, we'll be able to figure out how many snack parents for how many kids. Our Coaches are Gene Magliaro and Molly Graves. Gene and Molly run the practices and the Meets. Practice times for June have not been finalized but once they are we will get them on the website and notify you. They love teaching and encouraging the children...and the children love them in return! The Team Director for HTCC Hurricanes Team is Linda Young. You will most likely find Linda at the morning AND afternoon practices. We look forward to working together with you to make this a fantastic year. If you should ever have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at: (864)275-0282 (call or text) or email me @: bardad1022@bellsouth.net. Mary Ellen can be reached at : (864)901-4638 (call or text) or email @ maryellenbradley@bellsouth.net. Feel free to come to us anytime! Swim on!!! Guppy Helpers This year all kids age 11 and Up are able to be guppy helpers. We are not tracking the helpers or the number of times you help out and applying it a teen trip. I have been approached by many of the 11 & Up parents who say their kids need the service hours, so please consider helping the team and the guppies by assisting our youngest swimmers. You will have fun and I know they will all set a good example for our youngest swimmers. Practice Dryland practice was a lot of fun for the kids. It was good to see all the kids getting to know each other again and meeting all their new team mates. The coaches will continue to incorporate some dryland or wetland practice into their daily practice activities for the next several weeks.

Please have all Hurricane team members come to practice wearing shorts & t-shirts over their suits with tennis shoes and an extra towel. They will start practice with a short run and warm up before getting in the water. Wetland is exercises on the pool deck and they will not need anything additional for that. Guppies will not do any additional dryland training. The first few days of practice next week the coaches will be evaluating strokes and determining which lanes kids should swim in for practice. They try to group the kids based on their swim ability within their age group. The coaches will work with the kids to learn swim drills to improve their strokes. They will also teach them how to read the second hand clock and get them to start swimming at :10 intervals to keep everybody spaced appropriately and not running into each other. The coaches tried to use the swim clock with the kids last year, but many were not familiar with using a second hand clock so they didn t know what to do. If you have a watch or clock in your house with a second hand, please review it with your child this week so they understand how the second hand works. Some pool rules for the next 2 weeks: Since the club is having new tile laid in the pool house bathrooms for the next two weeks we need to be aware of his tools and stay away from them and keep the kids away from them. Parents of kids 10 and Under must stay according to the pool rules. Bring a towel and water bottle to all practices. The kids will get thirsty and the closest water fountain is at the Tennis Center. 8 and Under cannot walk to the Tennis Center by themselves. 9/10 kids can go with at least one older buddy. If a child of any age needs to go to the Tennis Center, they must tell a coach or parent first. If your 8 and Under child needs to use the restroom during practice, the parent will need to take them to the Tennis Center clubhouse. The Pool bathrooms will not be open. The pool is not open for play swimming. There will be no swimming in the diving area when another age group is practicing even if a parent promises to sit down there and watch them. It s an insurance problem, so don t ask. Practice Times This Week Practice Schedule Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri 4-5pm kids 10 and Under 5-5:30pm Guppies 5:30 6:30pm kids 11 and Up

Thursday There is a coaches meeting at 6pm on Thursday for all SAIL coaches, so we will have a shortened practice for the younger kids only. 4-4:50pm 10 and Under 4:50 5:15pm Guppies NO 11 and UP Practice on Thursday. The regular schedule will resume on Friday. This schedule is on the website. Practice Options June Based on the large number of 11 & Up swimmers we have this year, I m strongly considering moving around some practice times from what they have been in previous summers, and still keeping the start time at 8:30am. I m not moving it to 8am like some of the larger teams that s just too early. Keep in mind the pool opens at 10am every morning and we have to keep at least 1 lane open for recreational swimmers. I m also aware that some kids will be at their year around practices some days so that will affect the number of swimmers in all age groups, plus kids will be gone for camps, vacation etc. Here s what I m looking at: Morning practice Mon-Thur Afternoon practice Mon Wed 8:30 9:30am 10 and Under 4:30 5pm Guppies 9:30 10:30 11/12 5-6pm 10 & Under 10:30 11:30 13 & Up 6-7pm 11 & Up If the older kids would prefer to swim from 7-8pm, we can make the breakout sessions in the evenings instead of the mornings. I also plan to come down to the pool in the evening and see how many people are using it then. I know there aren t many swimmers in the morning so keeping 5 lanes until 11:30am shouldn t be a problem. I personally like the idea of moving the guppy practice to the afternoon Mon-Wed. because they will be able to easily join in with the spirit parties on Wednesday afternoons. Thur/Fri guppy practices will still be in the morning. Please email me your point of view on these practice times. If I hear from no one, I m going to assume that everybody is good with either practice time for both guppy parents and teen parents. Below are the number of swimmers we have in each age group. Guppy 17 10 and Under swimmers is 34 11/12 swimmers 24 13 & Up swimmers 21

Age Group # Boys # Girls Guppy 10 7 8 & Under 8 10 9/10 5 14 11/12 6 18 13/14 3 9 15-18 6 3 When registration is over in 2 weeks, I will make the final determination and put the practice times on the website. The morning practices for June that are listed on the website are not final. May Meets - Hurricanes May 24 Mock Meet starts at 5:30pm. This is a practice meet for the kids, and all the parent volunteers. We will have a pizza/pool party at the conclusion of the Mock Meet. May 31 Neely Farm @ HTCC. Starts at 5:30pm. This will be a big meet! They have about 120 swimmers this year and we will have about 70-75. The pizza party and donuts & ribbons will be held on June 3. We will not have the party that night or Friday morning due to school. Kids will select all 3 strokes they will swim on Thursday, May 24 practice/mock meet. If you aren t there to select your strokes or parents don t email them to me, the coaches will pick for you. June 3, 6-10pm Make Up Pool & Pizza Party for all swimmers and families Hurricanes & guppies! If your child swam at the 5/31 meet, they will receive their ribbons from this meet. Come relax, let the kids play, have some pizza and beverage of your choice. We will keep the lifeguards past 8pm if we want to stay. Volunteers for Hurricane Meets Here s who I have training in each of the various positions. Guppy parents don t need to worry about this at the guppy meets. You will get pool deck training in how to use a stop watch ;-) Stroke & Turn Al Adams * Jeff Wood * David Frengel * Mike Roche* Corey Holden * Karen Holden * Glen Carson Christine Brodsky Bo Finley Greg Snoad Brooks Drayton William Cuervo Amanda Cuervo Art Young

Below is the list of people who have completed training in each of the positions. Chief Timer (Lori Farmer) (Raye Carson) Records Jenny Justus (Michelle Weston) Runner Tim Keaton Jean Kleis Timers Claudia Fischer Tim Keaton Jean Kleis Sharon Serwinowski We need at least one parent from each family to be trained as a runner or timer. We need 18 timers at each meet home or away, and 8 runners at each home meet. Having each family get one person trained helps all the parents to only work ½ of the meet and not the entire meet. Our team, like all the other SAIL Teams, depends on the parents to volunteer, participate and help run the meets for our kids. If you have problems getting online to certify for a position, let me know and I will try to help you. The information below is from Park Owens, the SAIL Training Director. For all the other positions Online Certification is now available for most of the Officials positions, like timers, runners, records, ribbons, etc. To be Certified, go to www.swimsail.org, click on the "Officials" link on the left side of the website. Next click "Officials

Certification". Scroll down until you see the various positions that you want certification in. Click on " pre-approved" to see if you qualify for just online certification. If you do qualify, click "certify" and register to take the test. Remember to select your pool association when registering. If you do not qualify, register and take the test knowing that you will need to come to the appropriate classroom training session for final certification. For timers, runners, records, ribbons postions, remember to type in your full name and pool, take the test, and Your SAIL Rep will be sent an email that you have passed. If you fail the test the first time (and many timers did last year), just read the information and take the test again. BTW it will be a different test the 2 nd time. We will have Stroke and Turn, Starter and Referee Certification is now online. I have taken the available tests and found the process to be very efficient. If you have any difficulty or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Regards, Park Owings Reimbursement Forms/Treasurer New this year is reimbursement forms that must be completed, with receipts attached before you can be reimbursed for something you have purchased for the team. We operate on a very tight budget, and small purchases can add up quickly when I don t know the money is being spent. Lisa Wade is our Treasurer for this year. Please get your reimbursement form signed by Laurie Drayton if your purchase is for one of our social activities. If you buy for some other reason for the team, I will sign the form. We are trying to do a better job of tracking how our money is spent, and we hope this will help. If you need a form, email me and I will send one back to you. I will have blank forms with me at practice too. Spirit Buddies Later this week I will send out a list of everybody who has signed up for Spirit Buddies. Please make sure you check it and add your name by emailing Laurie Drayton obdrayton@aol.com She will also be at practice next week and can sign up kids there. There is a spirit buddy list for the guppy team and another one for the Hurricane team.

Yard Signs If you don t have a Home of a HTCC Swimmer sign in your yard yet, make sure you pick one up and put it in your yard with pride! At the end of the season party, I will remind you to return them for storage until next year. Team Spirit Wear & Towels Team suits you can still buy one at Alpine Ski on Augusta Road. They have several sizes in stock of both the girls suits and boys jammers. Team shirts everybody on the team (Guppy & Hurricane) will receive a team shirt just prior to the first meet on May 31. Once again our shirts are designed by our very own Suzann Adams! She has done an awesome job with them I know you will love them! Towels Here s who I have on the list for team towels. We will not be ordering them for another 2 or 3 years, so this is your last chance to get them. Parents may order towels for themselves too! I will call the company tomorrow and see when we can get on their run list. At the end of this newsletter are all the spirit wear orders. Please check that I have your item on my list. If you want to purchase something please see me on the pool deck or send me an email. Additional Spirit Wear Item Several Moms requested a sleeveless/tank top with a logo. Here is what we have found. I don t have a price on it, but I m sure it won t be more that $12 or $13. We would get a small white logo on the left chest. Email me if you want to order one and include the size. I will be getting one for myself.

Website www.htccswim.com I have updated the website with all the May activities and practices. I hope to get June on there next week. Please check it often so you know what time your kids will practice each day. Go to the schedule section to see the practice and activity schedule by day. While school is in session, it will vary from day to day especially for the Guppies who will miss a day or practice due to mock meet training and an early practice due to coaches training on May 17. Teen Activity Lori and Mike Roche are planning a teen activity for our 13 and older swimmers. Along with the coaches, they will be going to the National White Water Center in Charlotte on Friday, June 29 for an afternoon of rafting, ropes & rappelling and all kinds of challenging activities. I don t know the exact cost yet, but I have heard it s in the $50 range. More details to come. Dining Privileges/Parties on the Piazza As many of you are discovering, this year s pool membership also includes dining privileges. There are many good times to eat in the grill or dining room during the week, however, going to the evening barbeques on the piazza are especially fun. They will be grilling food to order and live music will be playing. It s usually a fun evening. Reservations are recommended. The next one is Saturday, May 19 from 5:30 9pm (yes, the same time as our pool party). Bu in June, it will be on the 16 th a Father s Day Special! Think about joining us for an adult evening! If you are not yet receiving weekly emails from the club about all the activities going on in areas other than the pool, just call them at 967-9510 and they will get you signed up on the email list.

Parking The club has asked that we use the parking lot across the street when using the pool for practice or meets. In the afternoon, that is always the shady area. Please don t use the parking area by the tennis center. However, you will find my burgundy Expedition parked alongside the pool walkway. That s because I m always hauling team stuff from my car to the pool deck and I m not carrying it from across the street. When it s just the kids and my black file box, I park across the street just like everyone else. So, please don t park alongside that pool sidewalk like I do they want to keep parking there to a minimum to keep that entrance way clear. However, when you become swim team director and haul all the stuff from your car you will get the perk of parking there too! Private Lessons The coaches will be offering private lessons starting this week. They are $15 for a 30 minute session. If your child is having problems with a stroke or flip turn, having them do a private lesson or two is a good idea. Sign up early, available times will go fast. My son will probably do a few of them to become proficient in all the flip turns this year. My kids do them every year just to improve in little ways that make them faster in the water. Annie Gillig will also be available for private lessons. She will post a sign up chart on the bulletin board. For new families, Annie swam at HTCC until last year. She wanted to come back and swim this year, and I told her no way! Annie is a year-around swimmer at YSSC and has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 400IM and the 200 backstroke. She leaves on June 22 for the Olympic Trials in Omaha. She won t have many time slots available for lessons, but she loves working with our kids and we are so fortunate to have an Olympic caliber swimmer that is also a former Hurricane. We will be cheering her on and I will post her results and accomplishments in future newsletters.
