GEORGIA STATE WOMEN S GOLF We are just about to head out to our first tournament of the spring season. The girls have been practicing and working hard on their mental games as well as their short games. We will be competing without Petra Duran this semester due to a freak injury that she sustained during our tournament in Pinehurst last October. She is recovering from surgery that was needed to repair two torn ligaments in her left wrist and she has just begun rehab after a long period in a cast. The girls had another successful semester in the classroom last fall. Our team GPA was a fabulous 3.63. Kudos to our academic advisor, Natalie Caracena, and to the tutors who work with our team throughout the year. I am very proud of the tremendous effort the girls put into their studies and I am thrilled that they continue to be very dedicated to excellence in the classroom. Our recruiting efforts continue throughout the year and I am happy to say that we have verbal commitments from four student athletes for next fall. We will update you with some background information on all of them once NCAA rules allow us to do so. At the end of this spring semester we will be saying goodbye to three seniors and it seems like yesterday that they all arrived on campus. Their goal is to bring home a Sun Belt Conference Championship in their last season of play. They are all busy completing their degrees and making plans for the next chapter in their lives. We will dearly miss seniors Emily Royer, Yasemin Sari and Paula Zabarte but we are excited to see what the future holds for all of them. Our home tournament, the 2018 John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate, will once again be held at Eagle s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, GA on March 25 th -27 th. We have 17 teams participating this year and we hope that some of you in the area will be able to come out and support our girls. We still have a few volunteer spots available so if you are free and would like a front row seat to the players, please contact Assistant Coach Lauren Smith at lsmith194@gsu.edu. Seniors: Paula Zabarte, Emily Royer, Yasemin Sari Thank you for your continued support and for being a part of our Panther Family. I would especially like to thank Bill and Su Reeves for their recent donation to our program. Because of donations like we received from the Reeves, we can do more for our athletes like taking all of them to play in a tournament or begin a working relationship with a sports psychologist to help our players with their competitive nerves during tournament play. We are very thankful to all of you who have helped us in the past and we look forward to growing our support base in the future. GO PANTHERS! Cathy Mant
