Northern Arizona 63 WILDCATS HOST T-BIRDS FOR FIELD TRIP DAY The Weber State women s basketball team will take on Southern Utah for its annual field trip game this week. The game will tip off at Noon on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Dee Events Center. The Wildcats will host 13 local area schools and around 4,000 students are expected to attend. The event is set up to provide local youth a chance to attend a WSU game and also promotes physical education. SCOUTING THE T-BIRDS Southern Utah enters Thursday s matchup with an 0-2 record following losses to UNLV and Pacific. The T-Birds have not fared well on the road as of late, having pulled off only a single road win over the last three years. Chanel Thorley leads the team in scoring at 14.0 points per game, and also hauls in 8.0 boards per contest. Challi Pascucci is averaging 8.5 points and a team-high 10.5 rebounds. ALL-TIME SERIES The two schools are tied with 10 wins each, but SUU has claimed the last four meetings. The two schools have not played since 2000-01, when the T-Birds downed the Cats 56-47 in Ogden. WILDCAT NOTES ABOUT THE WILDCATS Weber State is currently 1-1 on the season. The Wildcats opened the year with a 68-60 win over Dixie State at home, and then suffered a 66-58 loss to Boise State on the road. WILDCATS WEATHER STORM FOR WIN OVER DIXIE STATE The Weber State women s basketball team opened up the 2009-10 season on Friday night with a 68-61 win over Dixie State College at the Dee Events Center. We talked at halftime about getting to the ball with a sense of urgency, said WSU head coach Carla Taylor. I thought that was the biggest key for us tonight. The Wildcats scored the first nine points of the game, but the Red Storm surged to tie the game at 15-15 with 11:48 left in the opening half. Dixie State led by seven at 31-24 with 5:11 to go in the half, but the Wildcats made another run, this time a 10-3 spurt. Caitlin Anderson capped the run with a three-pointer to tie the game at 34-34 heading into the locker room. In the second half, the Wildcats would take the lead on a Joey O Neill layup 36 seconds into the period, and would never relinquish the lead. The Cats led by as many as seven, while the Red Storm cut the lead to a single point on four different occasions but could never get over the hump. Caitlin Anderson led all players with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The junior forward hit 6 of 10 shots from the floor and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. We talked at halftime about playing stronger defensively, Anderson said. Our offense is always going to be there, but we needed to be stronger defensively. O Neill, Sarah Conner and freshman Megan Patterson each scored 12 points to join Anderson in double figures. Patterson s 12 came in 21 minutes off the bench in her first official collegiate game and included a trio of threepoint field goals. Tanya Clark and Amber Scruggs each scored 13 points to lead the Red Storm, while Shanae Vaifanua added 10. Vajae Robinson led Dixie State with 12 rebounds. WSU UNABLE TO LASSO BRONCOS Boise State used a 10-2 game-opening run to grab an early lead, and never trailed as the Broncos downed Weber State 66-58 at Taco Bell Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats got as close as two points with 11 minutes left in the first half, but trailed 27-15 at the break and were unable to get any closer than six points over the final 20 minutes. Caitlin Anderson led the Wildcats in scoring for the second-straight game, putting in 12 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Sarah Conner hit a pair of three-point shots on her way to 10 points, and added four rebounds. The Wildcats fell to an even 1-1 on the early season, while Boise State improved to a perfect 2-0. Basketball is a game of spurts and we had a couple of good ones, said Taylor. They are things we can build on. WeberStateSports.com 2
