With the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro upon us, it s time for sports fans, especially football fans, to put their differences aside and get behind our men and women who will be representing our country in Brazil. Over the last couple of years, South African football has been surrounded by negativity, starting from Bafana Bafana failing to qualify for major tournaments, to our professional clubs being sold and changing ownership virtually every time the wind blows. But now it s time to put all that aside and focus on one thing only to support our teams in Brazil at the 2016 Rio Olympics. What makes this occasion even more special is the fact that this is the first time in the history of this nation that both our women s team, Banyana Banyana, and the Under-23 men s team qualified for the global spectacle at the same time. The South African Under-23 team led by coach Mich d Avray failed to qualify for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but Shakes Mashaba stepped in and took his boys all the way to Sydney in 2000. Even though the team was knocked in the group stages, no South African fan will ever forget the night Amaglug-glug beat Brazil 3-1. The Brazilians, boasting the likes of Ronaldinho and Lucio in their team, went to the match oozing with confidence, but Mashaba s boys brought them down to earth with a world-class performance. During that match BRAZIL HERE WE COME! each and every player performed to their level best and the win united the country. The team was helped by the fact that most players were already established stars in their respective clubs. Things might be a little different this time around, but the team is still capable of holding their own against the best. Overage players Itumeleng Khune and Mulomowandau Mathoho and the likes of Keagan Dolly, Rivaldo Coetzee and Abbubaker Mobara will bring a much-needed experience into Owen da Gama s youthful squad. Banyana Banyana this time led by Vera Pauw will be returning to the tournament for the second time in a row after their appearance in London 2012. Pauw might have failed to qualify for the 2015 World Cup in Canada, but one of the best decisions made by Safa was to offer her a new contract. From page 38 we profile both teams and analyse their chances of success in Brazil. On page 34 we feature an emotional interview with former midfielder Junaid Hartley. When the South African Under-20 national team participated at the 1997 World Youth Championships in Malaysia, Hartley was arguably the best South African player. His performance won him a move to French side RC Lens where he spent two years before a loan move to Vitoria Setubal in Portugal. Since his return from Europe in 1999, Hartley s career has been on a downward spiral, with the 38-year-old revealing that he is now living off handouts. To hear that a former professional player survives on handouts is a tragic story and one we wish current players will learn from. Zola Doda, Acting Editor COMPETITION AND GIVEAWAY RULES 1.
