Pennant Hills Bowling Club Newsletter 42, 10 August 2017 News from the Men s Club What happened? Singles Championships Congratulations to those who competed in the President Singles: Ralph George, Henry Hua, Barry Fisher and Voytek Lasek. Also to those in the State Singles: Matt George, Jim Brown and Mark Kakoschke. There were three entries in the Senior Singles Championship; John Archer, Gary Havron and Ian Miller. All acquitted themselves well, but the stand out was the evergreen John Archer, who won his section with four convincing wins, the score in the final being 31-19. John's fine result meant that in the playoffs the following Saturday he faced the formidable Neil Burkett from Merrylands. There he lost to the eventual winner, but was pleased to reach 20 points against the youngster. John was well supported by a dozen or so Penno spectators and should not be disappointed. Well played John, and thanks to the other 10 members who participated.

Our 68 th birthday carnival Despite a very dry July (weather-wise), the outlook for our 68th Birthday Carnival on Monday 31 July was not promising. Nonetheless, a very good number of teams entered - 36 representing 12 clubs, of which 22 were from Pennant Hills. This level of home support was greatly appreciated by the Match Committee. A new format of 2 morning games of 12 ends each was trialled, and the number of teams entered was vindication of the decision to dispense with the usual 3rd game in the afternoon. Again, the carnival was generously sponsored by Uniting Wirreanda Aged Care. Jodie Fairweather from Uniting was in attendance all day to promote the village, and was appreciative of the interest shown by many of the attendees. Thanks also to Kel Sullivan for his efforts in securing such valued sponsorship. The decision to have morning games only was, in hindsight, a very smart move, as the heavens opened up just before lunch. There was no way we could have played a third game. (The Match Committee members have now been likened to Nostradamus). As always, the standard of competition was high, and all games were keenly contested. The final results were: 1st Prize Ray Vindin, Phil Bonvino and Richard Thorpe (Dural), 23 points and a margin of 22 2nd Prize - Mark Kakoschke, Henry Hua and Phil Briggs (Pennant Hills), 23 points margin of 21 3rd Prize - Les Crow, Bill Jasprizza and David Innert (Denistone) 22 points, margin of 23 4th Prize- Cliff Fairbrother, Bob Husband and Graham Davis (Pennant Hills) 22 points, margin 19 Game 1 - Tony West, Peter Nolan and Tony Yard (Pennant Hills) 12.5 points, margin of 20 Game 2 - Tom Warner, Mark Havron and Paul Delves (North Epping) 12 points, margin of 15

Many thanks to all participants for a successful day. First place Second place Third place Fourth place Mid-Week 5-A-Side Pennants This short season of 5 or 6 weeks - the number of matches depends on the numbers in each section - began last Wednesday 2 August. We entered 3 sides this year - one in each of the Grades of A, B & C. Each side consists of a Pairs team and a Triples team playing 3 bowls and 2 bowls respectively over 21 ends. The first round was a good start to the season, the results being: Grade A - won 3-1 Grade B - Lost 1-3 (went down by 1 shot) Grade C - Won 4-0 Best of luck for the rest of the season. What s coming up? Zone Champion of Champions Next weekend - 12/13 August -, Kel Sullivan, our 2017 Major Singles champion, will represent the club in this event to decide who will represent Zone 10 in the State playoffs. Kel has a first round bye, so his second round will be at 12.40 pm at Wentworthville Leagues.

A fortnight later - 26/27 August - our Major Pairs champions, David Lesslie and Garry McKeough, are drawn to play, again at Wentworthville Leagues, the game beginning at 8.40 am. As for the singles, the eventual winner of this event goes to the State playoffs. Best of luck to Kel, David and Garry. We know you will do your best. State and Reserve triples Entries for the above events are due to be submitted by 5.00 pm this Friday 11 August. If you would like to enter a team in either of these events please advise the committee and an entry will be submitted. Games are to be held from 2 nd to 17 th September. Mixed pairs Entry forms are now on the boards, closing on 1 September. Grab a partner or add a single entry. First two rounds will be Saturday and Sunday 9 & 10 September. Lutanda mixed triples To be held on Tuesday 5 September on our greens. Format is three bowl turn around triples, with three games of seven ends. Wear pink and support a good cause.
