Knolls Notes Fall 2016 CALENDAR The next board meeting will be held on December 5 at 5:30 p.m. at 328 Colony Lane. Any residents of Haywood Knolls who wish to attend are invited. If you have a topic you wish to discuss, please contact Carole Sagan prior to the meeting. HAYWOOD KNOLLS WAVE A WAVE to Ivan Beggs for running the annual picnic. A WAVE to Diana Hayes and Cheryl Moss for agreeing to take over as Security Patrol Coordinators. A WAVE to David Allen for coordinating the volunteers for the annual picnic. A WAVE to the security patrol volunteers for this years participation. A WAVE to Art Gillespie and Bob Gerold for coordinating the raffle. A WAVE to the sixteen volunteers who worked on the annual picnic. A WAVE to the many residents who actively participated in the annual meeting on September 15 at the French Broad Baptist church. A WAVE to Alice Dacuba for putting together Knolls Notes. A WAVE to Judy Gaudette, Chuck Hayes, and Marilyn Sanko for serving on the audit committee. THIS & THAT THIS The Board appreciates the input from the many residents concerned about the front entrance lighting situation. We have obtained three estimates from licensed electricians to have this corrected professionally and this should soon be corrected. THAT - Ivan Beggs has done a great job of updating the Haywood Knolls website. We are seeking volunteers to help update and maintain the website. It is very important for all residents because when potential new residents are shopping for a home, the website serves as a selling point. If you wish to help, please contact any board member. THIS - Paper copies of Knolls Notes will be available at the HK Book Exchange at Newhall Park. THAT - Check out the HK Book exchange at Newhall Park. Its free for any resident young, old or in-between. Its easy to use: just borrow a book, and return it whenever. No library cards or fines are involved! The books are donated by HK residents and more donations are always welcome.

GREETING NEW NEIGHBORS WELCOMING COMMITTEE There will be a New Residents welcoming gettogether on Sunday, December 4, at Julia Luellen s home at 109 Crown Lane from 2-4 p.m. The Homeowners Association board members will be there to meet and greet. Just a couple of thoughts: Over thirty of Haywood Knolls 321 homes have sold in the past year. That means that 10 percent of our residents are new neighbors. One reason for including these facts here is that I have only a couple of welcome visits to report since the long list of thirty that I submitted at the annual meeting. The other reason is to emphasize the importance of all of us welcoming new neighbors when they move near us. Though I was late getting to new residents Leslie and Dave Hartley of 606 Goldview, I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. They are like many of our new wave of buyers: very friendly, interesting, younger (than I am, which describes 97% of the world s population), and very glad to be living here. That is evidenced in the awesome home and grounds improvements made by them and so many of our new owners. Presently there are eight houses in Haywood Knolls listed for sale by realtors, with four of them under contract. Realtors consider Haywood Knolls a hot area because sales are driven by attractions like an involved, friendly community, solid houses, interesting terrain with mature trees, and a very low association fee. If you have new neighbors, or if you are those new neighbors, welcome! And call or email me! Julia Luellen, Welcoming Committee 828-891-8752 jhluellen4@gmail.com When new neighbors move in near you, take a few minutes to welcome them to the neighborhood and our forest. Also, please encourage them to send their name, address, phone number and email addresses to Julia Luellen at jhluellen4@gmail.com. Ivan Beggs, Vice President TREASURER S REPORT Our Homeowner Association s fiscal year runs from July 1st thru June 30th. In accordance with these calendar dates, homeowner s dues are due each year on July 1st. The 2016-2017 budget was approved at the annual meeting. SECURITY PATROL Scott Masington, Treasurer The Haywood Knolls Security Patrol schedule is presently being coordinated by Diana Hayes and Cheryl Moss. Volunteers are needed. If you would like to participate, please contact Diane at djhayes8@yahoo.com or 828-891-2096.

Halloween Trunk or Treat A BIG thank you to all those who came out to our first annual Haywood Knolls Trick-or-Treat on Halloween night! About thirty children and their families enjoyed the beautiful weather and strolled along Park Lane for thirty minutes, talking and sharing with one another. We couldn't have done it without the six houses and two Trunk-or-Treats who took the time to make the night extra special for our children. You all were amazing! And thank you to the cautious drivers who came through Park Lane during that time. We are looking forward to an even bigger turn-out next year! You won't want to miss it! Meagen Jenzen

VINES AND KUDZU Trees are beautiful. - Vines kill trees. - Kill the vines to save the trees. - Cut a 3-foot wide section of the vines. Dip the ends of the vines that are growing out of the ground in Cross Bow or glycophosphate. Living in Haywood Knolls is having a home in a beautiful forest. The trees also provide homes to small and large birds, squirrels, raccoons, deer, bears and many other animals. To maintain the beauty that we enjoy, the trees must be healthy. Those green attractive vines climbing up the trees such as English ivy and kudzu slowly kill the trees. Eventually, the trees fall over in the woods or onto homes. English Ivy growing up a tree To prevent English Ivy vines from killing the trees, cut a three-foot wide section of the vines off the tree. Within three to nine months the vines will die and fall off the tree. Take care not to injure the tree when cutting. A final step to eradicate the vine is to dip the cut portion still growing out of the ground in Cross Bow or glycophosphate (or paint it on with a small brush), taking care to not get any on the tree. An alternative to chemical application is to clip the vines several times a year. Kudzu covering a tree Unfortunately, a much more invasive vine called Kudzu is spreading in our forest. Most of you have noticed Kudzu taking over whole hillsides, forests and homes in other areas. It is extremely harmful to individual trees and eventually to forests. Above is a sight that many of you have seen near Haywood Knolls. Small patches of Kudzu on your property may be treated in the same manner as English Ivy, but larger areas need to be treated by a professional. Please address any questions to David Lee at the Carolina Conservancy.

HAYWOOD KNOLLS INTERESTS Haywood Knolls is a very active community with varied interests. In the spirit of building community and relationships, a list of hobbies and skills, with the contact for each, is included on the Haywood Knolls website.
