ASSOCIATION Next Geeratio Postcard from a NJAA director ad state spotlights. Compiled by Kasey Miller. The true impact of the showrig Agus juior wis North America writig cotest The most importat life lessos juiors lear are i the showrig. This might seem a bit biased, but whe you thik about it, it makes perfect sese. From a youg age our juiors have a passio istilled i them to be successful. This drives them to set goals, be competitive ad to achieve what they set their mid to. With so may of America s youth sittig i frot of televisio screes all day playig the latest video game or watchig reality TV, I thik that ecouragig participatio i orgaizatios like the Natioal Juior Agus Associatio (NJAA) is crucial to buildig our idustry s leaders of tomorrow. Mollie Lastovica, a Texas A&M Uiversity ag commuicatios, jouralism ad political sciece major from Fredericksburg, Texas, has wo the studet divisio of the North America Agricultural Jouralists writig cotest. Lastovica, a juior, will receive the award ad a $750 travel stiped at the associatio s coferece April 8 at the Natioal Press Club i Washigto, D.C. Her story, Farmers Fight, was called a example of the importat role of studet jouralists iformig the public of developmets i agriculture o college campuses, by judge Pat Waters, retired busiess editor of the Omaha World-Herald. The writer produced a taut, iformative piece about Farmers Fight, a studet orgaizatio formed with the surprisig goal of promotig agriculture i a state where rachig/beef productio is kig, Waters said. The grassroots orgaizatio was formed after the Texas A&M studet ewspaper published a egative article about agriculture ad Yahoo listed agriculture as oe of the top five useless college degrees. Lastovica s article appeared i the magazie DRIVE. Life lessos I additio to teachig goal settig, showig cattle also teaches juiors to dress for success, to maitai good eye cotact with idividuals, to be dedicated, ad to practice hard at home so both the aimal ad the showma will be comfortable i the rig. Does ay of this rig a bell? I ve pulled from may of these qualities i may Jeifer Ewig situatios throughout my life, especially iterviews. Showig teaches professioalism to juiors at a youg age, which is hard for may kids to grasp. Perhaps the most importat thig that the showrig teaches our juiors is somethig that does ot come easy to most of us. Noetheless, we are faced with this multiple times throughout our lives to be humble. Eve whe juiors put i coutless hours i the bar, sometimes the judge sees it a differet way, ad we are forced to smile ad cogratulate aother juior for wiig. I my experiece, this is the last skill to fully develop i our youth, but it defiitely is the oe that will make the largest impact o our lives i the future. It is absolutely critical that we realize ad uderstad the huge impact that the showrig plays o juiors lives i the log ru. Our juiors are i a high demad i the workforce i ad out of the agricultural sector. This is because of the work ethic ifused i them at a youg age, but also because of the other life skills that they have gaied through experieces available to them through the NJAA that other youth may lack. The NJAA is a outstadig orgaizatio that truly builds juiors to be the best perso they ca be. Oe day I ll be proud to sig my kids up to become members of the NJAA ad, rest assured, they will be better people because of it.
