LOS ANGELES DODGERS (2-2) at Arizona Diamondbacks (2-1) LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (5-9, 3.77 in 17) vs. RHP Taijuan Walker (9-9, 3.49 in 17) Monday, April 2, 2018 6:40 p.m. Chase Field Phoenix, AZ Game 5 Road Game 1 Night Game 4 TV: SNLA Radio: AM 570 (English); KTNQ 1020 AM ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Dodgers won their second consecutive game last night, putting their hitting shoes on for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball and busting out for nine runs on 13 hits in a 9-0 shutout victory over the Giants. Tonight, the club begins its first road trip of 2018 with the first of three games against the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks. After a day game Wednesday, the Dodgers fly to San Francisco and will enjoy an off day Thursday before three with the Giants this weekend at AT&T Park. Next week, the team returns to L.A. for a five-game homestand, featuring a two-game Interleague series against the Oakland Athletics April 10 and 11. The Dodgers went just 8-11 against the Diamondbacks last season, including a 3-6 mark at Chase Field. However, the Dodgers turned the tables on the Snakes in the Postseason, sweeping Arizona 3-0 in the 2017 NLDS with the seriesclinching win at Chase Field. TRADER FAR: The Dodgers swung yet another trade today, making it two in the last two days. This time, Los Angeles acquired right-handed pitcher Jesus Liranzo, 23, from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Luis Ysla. Liranzo, who will be optioned to Double-A Tulsa, has gone 7-8 with two saves and has posted a 3.71 ERA in 91 career minor league games (15 starts) over five professional seasons with the Braves (2012-13) and the Orioles (2013-17) organizations. He has held hitters to a career.194 average and has struck out 202 batters in 170.0 innings. In order to create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers have transferred right-handed pitcher Tom Koehler to the 60-day disabled list (retroactive to March 26). THE BIG LEFTY: Dodger southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu will make his first start of the regular season tonight after making four Cactus League starts as he begins the season completely healthy for the first time since 2014. Last year, Ryu went 5-9 with one save and posted a 3.77 ERA in 25 games (24 starts). He struck out 116 batters against 45 walks in 126.2 innings, holding opposing hitters to a.263 average, including a.240 mark against righties. In 10 career starts vs. Arizona, Ryu is 3-3 with a 3.77 ERA (25 ER/59.2 IP) while holding the opposition to a.256 average. He is 2-2 with a 4.80 ERA in five starts at Chase Field with his last victory over the D-Backs in Phoenix coming on April 11, 2014 (7.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 8 K). MATTY BOOM BATTY: Dodger left fielder Matt Kemp is back in blue this season after starring in L.A. from 2006-14. Kemp has 1,190 hits as an L.A. Dodger, which ranks 10 th all-time, 14 behind Davey Lopes for ninth. Kemp also ranks among the all-time L.A. Dodgers in home runs (182, 4 th ), runs scored (650, 8 th ), doubles (215, 7 th ), RBI (649, 6 th ), batting average (.292, 6 th ), on-base percentage (.349, 10 th ) and slugging percentage (.494, 5 th ). WE LIKE HOMERS: Dodger first baseman Cody Bellinger collected his first hit of the season last night with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The homer was the 40 th of Bellinger s career, a milestone he reached in just 136 games, which, according to STATS, LLC is the third fewest number of contests needed to hit 40 all-time, trailing just Rudy York (129) and Mark McGwire (110). Bellinger and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner Corey Seager have both attained home run benchmarks very few have at their respective ages: MLB, Most HR by Player in Age-21 or Younger Season All-Time (based on season age, July 1 of season) 1953 Eddie Mathews, Mil (21) 47 1929 Mel Ott, NYG (20) 42 2017 Cody Bellinger, LAD (21) 39 1956 Frank Robinson, Cin (20) 38 Dodgers, Most Home Runs Before Turning 24 All-Time Adrian Beltre 76 Duke Snider 55 Tommy Davis 53 Corey Seager 52 Willie Davis 44 Cody Bellinger 40 *Seager turns 24 on April 27 and Bellinger turns 23 on July 13 this season. The club matched an MLB record that was more than 100 years old by their superb run prevention: MLB, Fewest Runs Allowed Thru 4 Games of a Season All-Time 2018 Los Angeles Dodgers 2 1915 Philadelphia Phillies 2 8 Teams Tied with... 3 SOURCE: STATS, LLC Dodger starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw, Alex Wood, Kenta Maeda and Rich Hill allowed just one run to the Giants (a solo home run by Joe Panik off Kershaw) over 25.0 innings (0.36 ERA) while striking out 27 and limiting the opposition to a.204 average (19-for-93). A LOOK BACK: The Dodgers posted a 104-58 record in 2017, becoming the first team in NL West history to win the division in five consecutive seasons. The team earned a World Series berth after defeating the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS, 4 games to 1, and finished the season with their first National League Pennant since 1988. The Dodgers posted the seventh 100-win season in franchise history (third in Los Angeles history) and first since 1974 (102-60). The Dodgers won 90+ games for the fifth consecutive season, a feat that had only previously been accomplished once in franchise history, 1951-56 (6). Los Angeles finished with the best record in the Majors for the first time since 1974 and the National League s best record for the first time since 2009. The Dodgers set a Los Angeles record for victories with 104 (104-58), tying for the second most in franchise history (also: 1942, 104-50). HALL OF FAME HAPPY: The Dodgers would like to wish Hall of Fame right-hander Don Sutton a happy 73 rd birthday today! Sutton, who had his uniform No. 20 retired in 1998, spent 16 of his 23 MLB seasons with the Dodgers and ranks as the franchise s all-time leader in wins (233), games pitched (550), innings pitched (3,816.1), strikeouts (2,696) and shutouts (52). Former Dodger outfielder Reggie Smith also turns 73 today. In 1977, Smith along with Dusty Baker, Ron Cey and Steve Garvey, became the first four teammates to hit 30 or more home runs in a season. FEARLESS LEADER: Dodger skipper Dave Roberts is entering his third season as the Dodger manager, following a 2016 campaign in which he was named National League Manager of the Year and a 2017 season in which he piloted the Dodgers to their first NL pennant in 29 years. Managers, Most Wins in First 2 Seasons with a Team All-Time Ralph Houk, 1961-62 NYY 205-119 (.633) Joe McCarthy, 1931-32 NYY 202-106 (.656) Joe Maddon, 2015-16 CHC 200-123 (.619) Dave Roberts, 2016-17 LAD 195-129 (.602) Casey Stengel, 1949-50 NYY 195-113 (.633) SOURCE: STATS, LLC *Houk holds the record for most wins by a manager in his first three seasons with a team (309 with the Yankees between 1961 and 1963). Roberts 15 Postseason victories are the second most by a big league manager in baseball history after his first two seasons, one shy of Mike Matheny (2012-13). The coaching staff has several new faces in 2018 as bullpen coach Mark Prior, assistant hitting coaches Brant Brown and Luis Ortiz and game planning and communications coach Danny Lehmann join the club in new roles. The remaining staff consists of pitching coach Rick Honeycutt (13 th season); bench coach Bob Geren (3 rd season); hitting coach Turner Ward (3 rd season); first base coach George Lombard (3 rd season) and third base coach Chris Woodward (3 rd season).
