TEAM SASKATCHEWAN PREPS FOR 2017 NATIONAL WOMEN S U-18 TOURNAMENT One year ago, the 2016 National Women s Under-18 Championship was hosted in Regina, Saskatchewan. It was a first for the tournament as the Saskatchewan Hockey Association became the only provincial branch to also serve as the host comittee for the National Tournament. The tournament was well received by outside competitors, spectators and Hockey Canada as Team Ontario-Red skated away with the Gold Medal over Team Quebec. Team Saskatchewan, as the host team did not garner the results they were hoping for, ultimately finishing the tournament in 6th place out of the (8) eight team field. Fast forward to 2017, the defending silver medalist, Team Quebec are hosting this year s National Tournament in Quebec City. For Team Saskatchewan, the provincial team have (9) nine returning players from last year s squad including; goaltender Jordan Ivanco (Saskatoon), defensemen Hannah Korroll (Saskatoon), Taylor Kirwan (Gull Lake), forwards Grace Shirley (Saskatoon), Mackenna Parker (Clavet), Jenna MacLean (Wilcox), Taylor Lind (Shaunavon), Jordyn Holmes (Saskatoon), and Miranda Hatt (Regina). This year s team hopes to draw off the veteran leadership and experience from those players whom have gone through the week long tournament previously. Action gets started on November 1st in La Belle Province, as Team Saskatchewan takes on Team B.C. in the openning game of the tournament with puck drop is slated for 10:00 AM (EST). You can follow the tournament HERE. To view Team Saskatchewan s roster for the tournament, is available HERE. TEAM SASK. RESULTS: TEAM SASKATCHEWAN FINISHES 4TH AT WHL CUP The newly rebranded WHL Cup took place in Calgary Alberta, October 18-22. The participating teams were the four western branches within Hockey Canada, including B.C. Hockey, Hockey Alberta, Hockey Manitoba and the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA). Team Saskatchewan took to the ice in a (3) three game round-robin tournament, prior to playoff action. Team Saskatchewan began the tournament with an 8-3 loss to Hockey Alberta. Alex Ozar would pick up 3 points (one goal, two assists) in the losing cause. Next up was the cross-border rivals to the east, Hockey Manitoba. Team Saskatchewan would fare stronger in this contest and held onto a 4-3 victory late in the third frame. The final round-robin game put Saskatchewan up against their west coast counterparts, B.C. Hockey. Team Sask. would be held scoreless in a 6-0 loss. Upon completion of the round-robin it was determined that Team Saskatchewan would take on B.C. Hockey in a grudge match of their round-robin game the day prior. The outcome of this game was much the same as Team Saskatchewan was held scoreless in a 7-0 loss. With the semi-final loss to Team B.C., Team Saskatchewan took on the loser of the other semi-final, which was Hockey Manitoba. This time around, Team Manitoba held Team Saskatchewan s offense in check with a 4-2 victory, claiming the WHL Cup bronze medal. In the gold medal game, the tournament champions were decided in overtime with B.C. Hockey putting the final tally up in the extra frame over Hockey Alberta, score was 4-3. The WHL Cup All-Star awards were handed out at the conclusion of the tournament. Receiving an award from Team Saskatchewan was goaltender Bryan Thomson of Moose Jaw. Congratulations to Bryan and the rest of Team Saskatchewan for representing the province and the SHA with class. For full results please click HERE. TEAM SASK. PHOTOS COURTESY OF DEREK LEUNG/WHL Kelly s Corner This fall has been a very interesting one to date in terms of the number of parents who are passionate about tiering their sons/daughters in Novice and Atom hockey. Due to the fact their kids will not develop playing with lesser skilled kids! I would like to ask some questions for those parents to consider and ponder throughout the season: What is the true purpose of Novice and Atom Hockey? Do kids learn how to play hockey in games or practices? What are the primary skills that kids in Novice and Atom should be working on? Kids at Novice and Atom may be decent young players for their age group, however on ice all kids go through their growth spurt, how will those be on teams of skill and compete levels at fifteen and seventeen? How much pressure are we as adults putting on kids aged six to twelve to perform in our sport? Are we the ones drawing them from our game to play other sports or no sports at all? The bottom line is that all players in our province at the Initiation through Peewee and Bantam levels need vast improvement in the basic elements of the game; skating; skating; skating; puck handling; passing; and shooting! Coaches, who are generally parents, there are hundreds of resources through the Hockey Canada Coaching App or Hockey Canada Drill Hub to enhance your practices and be focused on teaching and improving player skills. The time is now to stop the basis of needing to win hockey games by solely teaching systems and putting the best players on the ice every second shift at the young ages because ultimately, it doesn t help the young men or women at all in their development as hockey players! Focus your attention on teaching skills at all costs!!! THE CALL with TRENT CEY The SHA Referee s Division has completed 58 of the 85 clinics across the province and so far just under 2,000 officials have been registered. As we head into the final month it looks to be on pace to have well over 3,000 officials again this season. Also, a reminder to all assignors and those officials who were registered last season, if you are not recertified for this season the last day you are certified to work games is December 7. Along with the clinic season in full swing, elite supervisions have been busy as the new supervision technology is up and running. On the topic of elite hockey, the registration for male officials to attend the SaskFirst camps is open now and available on the SHA website. Congratulations go out to Alex Clarke, of Weyburn who was selected for two major assignments. She was selected to be a linesman for the 2018 IIHL Women s World Division I Group B Championship in Mexico City. That will take place Jan. 30 to Feb. 4, 2018. Clarke was also selected as a referee for the Women s under-18 National Championship in Quebec City, Nov. 1-6. Finally, I will leave you with these two tips that have been instructed to all officials this season at the clinics; 1. If it is a penalty, call it and 2. Diligently send in you game reports and game sheets when required. Thank you and keep up the good work. Trent Cey Manager, Officiating Development Are you following the SHA Ref s Division on Twitter?
