Upper Missouri River Adventure Canoeing Expedition May 17-23, 2015 Applications due April 10, 2015 Click here for the 2014 Video The Experience Join Pat Big Dog Torrey and GutMonkey for the newest form of the Leading Edge program - Leading X, brought to you by Pfizer Hemophilia. Leading X is a weeklong backcountry adventure that takes place from the bow and stern of a canoe. This is your chance to be part of a select group of adults from the bleeding disorder community that will not only learn the fundamentals of canoeing, navigation, and camping; but also gain leadership skills, develop personal responsibility, and form community bonds that will serve you for years to come. Participants will break camp daily, carry everything they need in their canoes, paddle down river to each destination, and camp in tents alongside the water. As a participant, you should be prepared to challenge yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally from the demands of canoe river tripping and living out of doors for a week. Although no previous canoe experience is needed, a willingness to learn and an enthusiasm for adventure is highly recommended. So why apply to go on this trip? To become immersed in nature with a group of your peers. To explore the majestic landscape of the 10,000 Islands of Everglades National Park. To enjoy fishing, hiking, fun challenges, sitting by campfires, and some of the most satisfying work you ll do this year. This is the kind of trip that you ll never forget. The Leadership Pat Torrey and his staff from GutMonkey will be directing this expedition in collaboration with Breakwater Expeditions, a team of highly-skilled outdoor professionals with years of experience in developing and leading adventure programs and expeditions for young adults, teens and families. Patrick Torrey is the founder of GutMonkey, an adventure education company that educates people with chronic medical conditions how to live rock star lives. Pat is a facilitator and trainer known for his powerfully engaging programs that inspire individuals and teams to believe in their own ability to grow. Pat takes participants into new territory (both physically and emotionally) where they see their potential, enjoy taking risks and transfer these experiences back into their everyday life. Pat has been designing and leading adventures in the bleeding disorder community for well over a decade. Joe Torrey has facilitated learning and adventure experiences in the bleeding disorder community for the past seven years. With a degree in Outdoor Education and Leadership, and years of experience working at summer camps, outdoor schools, challenge courses, expedition programs, and classrooms, he crafts opportunities for communities to learn and grow from each other and nature. Joe lives in Portland Oregon and enjoys bike riding, composting, and general rabble rousing when he takes a break from changing lives with GutMonkey Lars Hall, lead guide and co-founder of Breakwater Expeditions, has honed his skills as an outdoor leader and guide in some of the world s most awe-inspiring classrooms. For 18 years he has developed, facilitated and guided therapeutic experiences in a variety of settings ranging from the mountains to the sea and has logged more than 1500 days in the field working with adolescents, adults and families. Leading X is generously supported by

The Destination The Missouri River is the longest river in the United States. We will explore this majestic waterway following in the footsteps of the 1805 expedition of Lewis and Clark. The Upper Missouri has a rich and interesting history, including Lewis and Clark campsites, century-old pioneer homesteads, Native American rock art and tipi (or teepee) rings, fur trading sites, and steamboat landings. This flat-water float features cottonwood trees, sandstone cliffs rising vertically from the water, and natural rock sculptures before entering the Montana badlands, where erosion has carved a three-dimensional tapestry. Wildlife abounds throughout the area where elk, mule and white-tailed deer, big horn sheep, coyotes, and pronghorn antelopes can be seen. In this journey we will experience, in an intimate way, the vast and historic Western Plains.
