The Three Crowns shut out the Falcons 5-0, 6-0 in the first and second games, respectively. Five-time MIAC Coach-of-the-Year Mike Carroll, now in his 13th season at the helm, returns 18 letterwinners from a team that posted a 22-5-3 overall record and 14-2-2 MIAC mark, which led to a seventh-straight conference title and eighth-consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. The Falcons enter the match-up with 1-0-0 overall and NCHA marks after defeating Marion University on Tuesday in their home opener. Last season, head coach Jim Ingman led his squad to the first winning season in Concordia women s hockey history. The Falcons finished 13-11-4. He has compiled an overall record of 263-64-20 in 12 seasons on the bench and has the most coaching victories in the history of the program. Carroll, an Edina, Minn. native, competed in hockey and baseball at Minnesota State University-Mankato. After graduating with a degree in municipal recreation in 1982, Carroll played professional baseball in the Montreal Expos organization for two years. Carroll is assisted by Stephen Carroll (MSU-Mankato 81) - named one of the 10 greatest Mavericks in their men s hockey program, Kirstin Peterson (Gustavus 11), a three-time All-American for the Gustavus women s hockey program from 2008-11, and Matt Carroll, Mike s son. Wisconsin native Jim Ingman was hired to be the head coach of the first-ever women s hockey team at Concordia University in Mequon in 2007. A 2001 UW-Stevens Point graduate, Ingman spent five years as an assistant for the Bemidji State University women s hockey program. Prior to working at Bemidji State, Ingman was an assistant for the UW-Stevens Point women s hockey squad, helping build that program from the club level to national prominence over a four-year period. Ingman is assisted by Emily Mason (Connecticut College). ABOUT CONCORDIA: The women s hockey program at Concordia University began just four years ago and has progressively gotten better under the direction of Ingman. The Falcons inaugural season didn t see a single victory (0-22-3), but they improved to 6-17-3 in the 2008-09 season and 9-15-3 in their 2009-10 campaign. Last year, Concordia posted its first winning season at 13-11-4. Not only have the Falcons drastically improved as a program, but they ve also climbed the ladder in the conference rankings. Concordia proved to be an offensive force to be reckoned with last season, ranking third in the NCHA in goals (84), assists (114) and points (198). They finished the 2010-11 league season 10-6-4 in a tie for fourth place. Junior forward Samantha Meuwissen returns as the team s second best point-scorer for last year. Meuwissen tallied 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points. Senior Hilary Christianson also returns after recording the second most assists for the Falcons last year with 19. One issue that Coach Ingman needed to address over the offseason was replacing the team s only two goalies from a year ago. Ingman used first-year goaltender Kaitlyn Evans in the season opener. Evans tallied 24 saves and allowed four goals. MINNESOTA GROWN: The 2011-12 Gustavus roster includes 26 women, 23 of whom are natives of Minnesota. There are also two Minnesota high schools that have produced three Gustie hockey players each - Hill-Murray and Stillwater. Marissa Brandt, Melissa Doyle and Jess Haren are graduates of Hill- Murray, while Amanda Cartony, Allie Schwab and Marah Sobczak all hail from Stillwater.

PAGE 3 - GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE GOLDEN GUSTIE WOMEN S HOCKEY GAME NOTES- NOV. 4 ALL-CONFERENCE RETURNERS: The Gusties return four All- Conference members from last season - sophomore forward Amanda Cartony (Stillwater, Minn.) and junior forward Lindsey Hjelm (North Oaks, Minn.), along with senior goalie Danielle Justice (Alexandria, Minn.) and senior forward Allie Schwab (Stillwater, Minn.), who both earned Honorable Mention recognition. BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN: Senior captain Mollie Carroll and fellow forwards Amanda Cartony, Lindsey Hjelm and Allie Schwab return to the ice as the Gusties top four pointscorers from a year ago. The four forwards accounted for 46 goals and 50 assists and will lead the charge up front once again. COACH S OUTLOOK: We have our top four point-scorers back this season, so that s an area we feel we will build upon, Gustavus Head Coach Mike Carroll acknowledged. Over the offseason, we wanted to improve our size and strength, and that improvement is starting to show during practice. After the first week of practice we are fairly optimistic that the goals we set in the spring are moving forward. REPLACING AN ALL-AMERICAN: Defensively, the Gusties will need to replace three seniors from last season, including three-time All-American Kirstin Peterson, who now serves as the team s assistant coach. Assistant captain Jess Harren (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.), Maddie Bergh (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.), Gina DeNucci (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn.) and Kelsey Kennedy (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) will look to fill the void left at the blue line. Bergh made the MIAC All-Rookie Team last year as a part of a defense that allowed an average of 1.00 goals per game during the league season. SERVING JUSTICE: Gustavus goalie Danielle Justice led the MIAC last year with a goals against average of 1.34. In 26 starts, the senior goalie recorded 434 saves with a save percentage of.925 en route to a 17-5-3 record, including seven shutouts. Justice currently holds the highest save percentage (.936) in program history among goalies with at least 200 career minutes and will extend the program s record for most minutes in goal (3668:56). HIGH HOPES: After collecting its seventh-consecutive MIAC Championship and eighth-straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearance, the Gustavus women s hockey program has set a high standard of play for the 2011-12 campaign. The Gusties received nine out of 10 first-place votes in the MIAC Women s Hockey Coaches Poll and are ranked No. 7 in the nation according to the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) preseason poll. FALCONS GROUNDED: The Falcons enter Friday s match-up with an early undefeated 1-0-0 record overall as well as in the NCHA, but will have to forget last season s outcome against the Gusties if they want to remain unbeaten. Last year s season opener for Gustavus saw head coach Mike Carroll s squad convincingly defeat Concordia 5-0 in Mequon, Wis. The Falcons and Gusties lined up again the following day and the result was more of the same - a 6-0 victory for the Three Crowns. USCHO.COM Div.
