Royals vs. Tigers KC has now won three in a row over the Tigers, including the first two games of this four-game set and taking a 5-3 edge in the season work...it s a streaky schedule this year between these clubs, with Detroit here for nine in a row between now and August 29, before the Royals visit Motown for the final four in late September...KC possesses a 349-342 edge in all-time work, including a 181-162 advantage in Kansas City, 171-148 in Kauffman Stadium Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/2 @ Det L, 1-6 Liriano Hammel 15,476 4/3 @ Det W, 1-0 Junis Boyd 15,083 4/4 @ Det PPD - Snow/Cold 4/20 @ Det L, 2-3 (10) Jimenez Keller 15,406 @ Det W, 3-2 Junis Greene 17,194 4/21 @ Det L, 4-12 Fiers Duffy 19,302 4/22 @ Det W, 8-5 McCarthy VerHagen 19,034 5/3 KC W, 10-6 McCarthy Bell 28,866 5/4 KC W, 4-2 Boyer Stumpf 24,648 5/5 KC 5/6 KC BETTER LATE THAN NEVER--Kansas City s bats were dormant for the first seven innings of last night s affair, but after falling behind 2-0 in the eighth the offense came to life with a four-spot, capped by Jorge Soler s two-run single to stake the Royals to a 4-2 victory over the Tigers...it was KC s fourth straight win at home and the fifth in the last seven games overall...the Royals were held to just three singles over the first seven frames by Detroit starter Francisco Liriano, but a leadoff walk in the eighth signaled the end of his night and the KC bats then followed with four hits, an intentional walk and sacrifice fly to take control of the contest...alex Gordon had an RBI single followed by an intentional walk to Alcides Escobar, then a sac fly by Whit Merrifield tied the game and set the stage for Soler s heroics for a second time this week... the Cuban native hit a three-run homer in the 13th inning on Tuesday night for KC s win in Fenway Park... Blaine Boyer, who allowed the two eighth inning runs to the Tigers, wound up benefitting from the fourrun rally to earn his first win of the year...kelvin Herrera made quick work in the ninth for his sixth save. SOLER POWER STRIKES AGAIN--Right fielder Jorge Soler waited until his final at bat of the evening to extend his hitting streak to a career-high tying 10 games, knocking home the deciding runs with his eighth inning single last night...he s now matched his 2015 best streak while with the Cubs, while reaching base safely now in a career-best 19 consecutive game...soler is batting.385 (15-for-39) with five doubles, three home runs, seven runs scored, 10 driven in, six walks, a hit by pitch with a.478 on-base pct. and 1.222 OPS during his hitting streak...he s had a huge hand in KC s recent 5-2 mark, hitting.345 (10-for-29) with six runs, two homers and seven RBI in that span... Soler s 19 walks on the year not only lead the Royals, but rank tied for fifth in the league, while his.429 on-base pct. is tied for sixth...since snapping an 0-for-11 start to the year, he has batted.349 (30-for-86) while reaching safely in 23 of his last 24 games with nine doubles, four homers, 16 walks, two hit by pitches and a.462 onbase pct. and.593 slugging pct. which adds up to a 1.055 OPS. RUNS STARTING TO COME--Despite being held to just six hit last night, the Royals appear to be heating up as the temperatures rise, hitting.298 (73-for-245) in the last seven games, while scoring 41 runs for a 5.9 per game average and posting a 5-2 mark...those numbers are a vast improvement over the 3.2 runs per game scored over the first 25 games of the year, while hitting just.175 (35-for-200) in RISP situations and batting.239 overall as a team...the Royals were 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position last night vs. the Tigers, but remain 30th in the Majors in RISP hitting with a team mark of.204 (55-for-269), but have hit.290 (20-for-69) in RISP situations during this seven-game stretch. DUPE REMAINS PERFECT--Our own Bill Duplissea made good on his lone replay review last night, when James McCann was called safe on a stolen base attempt in the seventh inning...after a very quick 32-second delay, New York overturned the call on the field and upped Dupe s record to 9-for-9 on the year, making the Royals the only to have a perfect start to their replay review season...dupe has made good on 68% of his challenges in his career (108-for-160), which ranks among the best, including a Major League best 73% success rate over the last three seasons (61-for-84). HOME IMPROVEMENTS--The Royals won their fourth straight home game last night after halting a 10-game Kauffman Stadium slide a week ago tonight in the second game of a split twin-bill with the White Sox...Kansas City had a winning record in The K for each of the last five seasons (2013-2017), going 227-178 which was good for a tie with Toronto for fourth among American League clubs in that span. TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Jordan Zimmermann (1-0, 5.81) vs. RHP Jason Hammel (0-3, 4.91) 2018 2017 Career 2018 2017 Career Jordan Zimmermann vs. Royals - 1-0 3-0 Major League Record 1-0 (5.81 ERA) 8-13 88-70 Jason Hammel vs. Tigers 0-1 1-0 3-3 Major League Record 0-3 (4.91 ERA) 8-13 92-103 JASON HAMMEL takes the hill for his seventh start of the season, the 287th of his career and 345th overall outing...he s making his third start of 2018 vs. Detroit and 14th all-time (17th appearance)...the 35-year-old right-hander is in the second season of a two-year deal he signed on February 8, 2017, which includes a mutual option for 2019. NOT SUCH A GRAND TIME--Jason absorbed a 10-6 defeat last Monday night at Fenway Park, falling to 0-3 on the year...he was charged with a season-high eight runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings, with the most damaging blow coming on a third-inning grand slam by Xander Bogaerts...the slam came as part of a five-run frame, in which the Royals saw an early 3-1 lead evaporate...hammel was also charged with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings in his shortest outing of the season...it marked his first time allowing eight runs or more in a start since surrendering nine on September 6, 2016, while with the Cubs in a 12-5 loss at Milwaukee. FANTASTIC IN THE FIRST--For the sixth-straight start, Hammel kept the opponent off the board in the opening frame, setting the Red Sox down in order... in his six first innings this season, the righty has allowed no runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts...over the last two seasons, his 2.13 ERA in the first inning (9 ER in 38.0 IP) is tied with Zack Greinke for sixth-lowest in the Majors (min. 30 starts). EXCELLENT EARLY--Since joining the Royals, Jason has been good the first trip through the batting order, with opponents slashing just.244/.292/.361 (77- for-316)...that includes a.157 average (8-for-51) in his first six starts this year...he s struggled after that as the opposition has hit.276 (86-for-312) the second time seeing him and.335 (76-for-227) the third time through the order since the start of last year. LOOKING FOR SUPPORT--Kansas City plated a season-high five runs during Hammel s last start, however they ve scored just 15 in his 36.2 innings this season for a 3.68 run support average...since the start of last season, his 4.19 run support average is second-lowest in the AL (min. 35 starts) to teammate Ian Kennedy (3.82). VS. TIGERS--Jason is making his third start of the year against Detroit, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA (7 ER in 14.0 IP) in his first two outings...he matched a careerhigh with 9.0 innings pitched in the first game of a split-doubleheader on April 20 at Comerica, but took a no-decision in KC s 3-2 setback in 10...he s made seven starts vs. the Tigers as a member of the Royals, going 1-1 with a 4.25 ERA (20 ER in 42.1 IP), holding them to a.242 average (40-for-165). HOME AGAIN--Hammel is making his third home start of the season, posting a 3.75 ERA (5 ER in 12.0 IP) with a no-decision vs. the Angels (5-4 KC loss) on April 13 and a 6-2 setback to Milwaukee on April 25...he s 4-7 at The K over the last two seasons with a 4.81 ERA (57 ER in 106.2 IP), while he s gone 4-9 with a 5.63 ERA in his road starts...jason is 42-40 with a 4.39 ERA in 166 career outings and 138 starts at his home venues throughout his career.
