2007-08 Richmond Spider Swimming 2007-08 Recap Spider Swimming Captures Lucky No. 7 It was lucky No. 7 for the Richmond women s swimming team in 2007-08, continuing its stranglehold of the Atlantic 10 Championship title and cementing its place as one of the most successful programs in conference history. The Spiders became just the sixth team in any sport in A-10 history to win seven or more titles in succession, swimming away with this season s trophy by more than 200 points. Senior Jessica Witt, a two-time All- America selection, was named the A- 10 Championship s Most Outstanding Performer for the second time in her career and marked the seventhconsecutive Spider to win the award. Head Coach Matt Barany has won the Coach of the Year Award in each of his three years at Richmond. Sophomore Katie Sieben s NCAA A -cut in the 100 fly highlighted yet another season of outstanding individual accomplishments both in the pool and in the classroom. The team compiled a cumulative of GPA of 3.15 during the Spring semester, while Sieben and junior Lauren Beaudreau each garnered Academic All-Atlantic 10 honors. That pair -- Sieben and Beaudreau -- also represented the Spiders at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in July and joined former Spider Brook Boncher (2004) as the program s three Olympic Trialists in school history. Beaudreau inked her ticket to the 2008 Trials by breaking the meet record in the 200 IM at the 2006 Speedo Junior National Championship, while Sieben clinched the spot with her 100 fly performance at the 2007 Junior Nationals. In addition to Sieben s A cut in the 100 fly of 53.73 -- a time which stood as one of the three fastest in the nation early in the season, Richmond achieved six more B cuts. Sieben had two in the 50 and 100 free, Beaudreau had a pair in the 200 breast and 200 IM and Witt in the 400 IM and 500 free. Witt s time in the 500 free (4:50.44) at the Terrapin Cup was one of four school records to fall during the 2007-08 campaign, while the 400 medley relay s record-breaking performance at the A-10 Championship marked the 12th conference record set by the Spiders over the last three years. Sophomore Alex Helland etched her name on the 100 back school record with a 56.21 at the Terrapin Cup. Freshman Nicole LePere set a new school record in the 200 back (2:01.08) at the A-10 Championship. The 400 medley relay of Helland, Beaudreau, Sieben and Witt shattered the school record in the 400 medley relay (3:45.74) at the Terrapin Cup. 2007-08 Richmond Spider Swimming Head Coach Matt Barany Three-Time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Third Season at Richmond James Madison 95 Matt Barany has continued a long-established winning tradition at the University of Richmond, making the Spiders the A- 10 s premier women s swimming program. Taking the reigns of the Spider program in May of 2005 after serving as the director of swimming at James Madison University, Barany has helped extend Richmond s streak to an unprecedented seven-consecutive Atlantic 10 Championships, which is a conference record for the sport. Under Barany s direction, the Spiders captured the 2008 A-10 Championship -- the team s sixth-consecutive win by more than 200 points. He guided sophomore Katie Sieben to an NCAA A -cut in the 100 fly to mark the fifthstraight season Richmond has advanced at least one to the NCAA Championships. Two A-10 individual honors remained in Richmond hands during Barany s third year as senior All-American Jessica Witt was named the sixth-straight Most Outstanding Performer from Richmond, while he extended the A-10 Coach of the Year streak at Richmond to seven-straight. All of the athletic success was mirrored with excellence in the classroom. The Spiders accumulated a team GPA of 3.15 during the 2008 Spring semester, led by the 3.94 from Sieben. Beaudreau and Sieben each garnered A-10 Academic All-Conference honors. Four more school records fell during the 2007-08 campaign, running Barany s total to 20 set over his three-year career. The 400 medley relay s record-breaking performance at the A-10 Championship marked the 12th conference record to fall in Barany s tenure. During the summer of 2008, both Sieben and Beaudreau competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, after Beaudreau won the 200 IM event at the 2006 Speedo Junior National Championships with a mark of 2:18.38, setting a new Junior National record. Sieben earned her spot during the 2007 U.S. Summer National in the 100 fly, while Beaudreau dropped her previous 200 IM time to 2:16.85 at the same meet. A Midlothian, Va. native, Barany guided both the men and women s programs at JMU in 2004-05 after serving as the men s head coach the three previous seasons. Barany led the women s program to four school records and had one of his swimmers earn an NCAA B qualifying time in his first year with the program. He was a two-time recipient of the Steve Miller Award, an annual team honor that recognizes athletes who best exemplify enthusiasm, energy, dedication and love for swimming. In 1999, Barany started the women s swimming program at Randolph-Macon College. During his final season (2001) in Ashland, Va., he earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Atlantic States Conference and Randolph Macon Coach of the Year honors. 2007-08 Richmond Spider Swimming Last Will & Testament... Some will tell you that a picture is worth a 1,000 words. But, as seniors looking back, we can tell you that SpiderSwim is worth ten times more than that. While it is tradition for the seniors to will down the team gear and clothing we have amassed throughout the years, there is a bigger part of what the team means to us that we would like to pass on. Without these everyday activities, Spider- Swim would not be quite the experience we have enjoyed at Richmond. First, a few pieces of knowledge that everyone should be reminded of: It IS socially acceptable to keep your snorkel (and all of your other equipment for that matter) for all four years. Don t be afraid to stand out from the rest of the group. We expect Smanuel, Meerkat, Plattapus, Tanker, & Steinmart to make Dennis proud. Hot pink toe nail polish is always in style, and we re still pretty sure the officials at A10 s won t notice if you take off a little early. Be prepared to defend the state you live in. It may take you an entire four years to try and convince Jay that it s not too bad of a place to live. And every now and then you may be referred to by that state. We challenge anyone of you to be at the end of the famous kick set with Katie Sieben. Contact us on the Saturday it happens! When Sherman flies to the backdoor in Sarasota, let him in. He just likes to say hi and probably won t try and eat you. Get used to hearing Katy yell come on, lets go, you can go faster than that, or other inspirational words every time you re at the wall. Don t be fooled by Matt s stories. It took us three years to finally figure out that he does not live with his mother. Always make sure each freshman can propose marriage to Matt, know their ABC s backwards, dance like no one is watching, and sing their heart out. As a second request, the SpiderSwim Class of 2008 wishes for: Kylie to continually roll her eyes when Matt tells a joke! Chrissy to repeat and then after each set is given to her. It is important to always know what is coming next! Elizabeth should play the part of team mom. It s a hard job, but someone has to do it - a.k.a Denney! Lauren must tell the freshmen after a.m. practices they can only get a ride to the Pier for breakfast if they hurry up. Cara has to cook the freshmen dinner during the first week of class and provide them with life lessons for college. Hannah must develop the reflex that each time we sit down for a meeting, she falls asleep like Jessica did. Alex should fill her ears with enough piercings that she successfully passes Jessica. Beth Ann must NEVER take her cap off. Even after practice, in the van, on the way back to the condos, or in class. Nicole should perfect the 3 jumps behind the blocks before each and every race. Natalie needs to say Mornin Matt! every morning & afternoon practice. And anytime else you feel like it he loves it. Steve, it is now your duty to be a part of Freshmen sing, with either Two Step or another great dance song. Although four years of college flies by, and being a Division I Athlete is an opportunity that only happens once, you will always have the memories. Cherish the photographs - they will last forever, but create new memories daily. And don t worry, the freshmen (and their parents) have the picture thing covered. May each circle be the best circle ever!, your teammates become zoo animals, and please don t forget to give the Monkey Lion some love! Best Wishes, Andrea and Jessica 24
