FC CENTRAL NEWSLETTER EDITION - NO. 3 - DECEMBER 2014 BASFORD FC & FC CENTRAL STUDENT PROGRESSION COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON SO FAR DID YOU KNOW? CAPTAIN HOLLIS IN THIS ISSUE: BASFORD UNITED ACADEMIC NCFC www.centralnottingham.ac.uk E: enquiries@centralnottingham.ac.uk T: 0115 914 6414

INTRODUCTION The Central College Nottingham and Basford United FC partnership is developing very well since it started in September 2014. The football programme has over 65 full time students that benefit from the excellent education and football scheme. The players benefit from 2 hours of training Monday/Tuesday/Thursday and Friday with match day being on Wednesdays. There are excellent education courses provided at Level 2 and Level 3 of study that are all linked to football. This creates the ideal platform for anyone wishing to develop both their football and academic performance. For details on joining the scheme please contact the College on the details at the end of this edition of FC Central. THE SEASON SO FAR UP-DATE FROM HEAD COACH RAY In the Conference Youth Alliance, the Basford Utd FC Academy is going from strength to strength. With a fine run in the FA Youth Cup now at an end, focus is on the very strong and competitive Conference Youth Alliance. After six games FC Central are top of the Midland Conference following a 100% start to the season and includes six wins from six. Notable results include the 12-1 and 8-1 drubbings of Coalville Town and Boston Utd, as well as an equally impressive 3-0 away victory against league favourites, Mansfield Town. Individually players from the other squads are also progressing well, even if league results have been mixed. Players are continually improving and making notable individual impacts on games. Always with an eye ahead, we expect a strong showing from a number of first year players who have made huge improvements and are adapting to under-19 football very well.

BASFORD UNITED FC The Basford United FC first team compete in the Midland league Premier division. Current year 2 student Joe Coxon and ex Central students Kevin Hemagou and Ruben Wiggins - Thomas are currently playing for the first team. The site is developing well and features some excellent facilities including a 3G pitch, outdoor football pitches, a fully furnished fitness gym and a brand new darts academy!

DID YOU KNOW? PERIODISED COACHING - AN EXTRACT FROM MAKING THE BALL ROLL Working towards a syllabus is also known as periodised coaching. A periodised coaching program is a planned, logical scheme of work, with the players at the centre of your planning. The traditional basis for our coaching tends to be reactionary. We spot that something from game day was not good enough, so we work on that during the next session. So if your team concedes lots of goals, the next session is spent on learning how to defend. This type of coaching is called episodic coaching. While this type of coaching is popular, its long-term benefits are minimal. When players reach the age of 16, there is scope for more episodic work, provided they previously have had a good grounding in the game. Most of the time, coaches only need to be reactive to performances once results start to have significance. An adult professional team for example, if they are susceptible to conceding goals from set-plays (or restarts ), may spend more time focusing on defending corners. Often when a struggling team employs a new Head Coach, he may spend the immediate number of sessions working on the team s fitness and their defensive / offensive shape. We frequently hear these coaches talking about making a struggling team organised and hard to beat. As results are of utmost importance at this level, episodic coaching is a valuable method. To an extent, however, first team coaches will also work periodically to achieve medium and long-term objectives we often hear of a coach having a three or five-year plan. Unfortunately at the top level of the professional game, managers are given less and less time to work towards long or even medium-term goals [3]. It is understandable therefore that focusing on short-term objectives, supported by episodic-type coaching is quite forgivable. In the world of youth soccer, however, the threat of being fired from your position due to league points is vastly reduced (although I am sure there are instances of this from poorly-informed decision-makers). Therefore, certainly up to the 16 to 19 age-group, a periodised approach to coaching is a necessity.

STUDENT PROGRESSION Student Name: Matthew Hickingbotham Course: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Performance & Excellence Dates at the college: September 2012 June 2014 Headline: Achieved a scholarship worth $100,000 at State of Kentucky College playing for Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers Matt Hickingbotham always attended lessons on time and was always punctual. He achieved a D*D*D* profile achieving all distinctions in every single unit of study right from the start of his course. His assessments were often way above the distinction criteria asked of him and he always handed these in on time. Furthermore he was very well respected within the group. FOOTBALL: Through this hard work he has achieved a scholarship with the State of Kentucky College and is thoroughly enjoying himself there, with his current team goal being to reach the Conference Championship, he has played every single fixture so far and is walking out with mascots into large stadiums filled with thousands of spectators. He is now training at a very high level where the average bleep test score is stage 17, training every day followed by 3 gym sessions a week.

CAPTAIN HOLLIS The success of Haydn Hollis s football career continues to thrive as the former graduate of the Meadow Lane youth Academy cements is place in the Notts County first team. Haydn who is a naturally gifted centre-back was given his chance at the senior level with marking free-scoring front man Jordan Rhodes and he did not disappoint. His aim was then, to break into the starting 11 on a regular basis. Haydn s chance came with the arrival of new manager Shaun Derry which he took with 100% commitment. This proved a very valuable inclusion under his guidance and his impact was critical during the GREAT ESCAPE campaign to avoid relegation into league 2. He contributed with a number of goals and he was rewarded with the number six shirt as a result of his outstanding performances. Haydn is now the club s longest serving senior player and in recognition of his leadership and organisational qualities he has achieved the ultimate goal of being awarded the role of Club Captain. Haydn response to this: When I was first told I was going to be Captain for the 1st team it was an hour and a half before kick-off. I didn t really have time to think about the achievement and honour that had been given to me I just knew I had a game to play on that particular day! Having captained all my junior teams and captained this Football Club at youth team level and Reserve team level Captaining the 1st team was the icing on the cake. A real ambition of mine and I finally had achieved it I have now captained the club at 1st team level on many occasions and I still feel as proud and as honoured as I did the very first time. Every time I put that armband on I will fill up with pride and emotion. Although this made me feel very happy I know I have an important role to play as I still have a job to do on the pitch. Does this mean I have to change my job?...

I feel it doesn t. Maybe there is a little more pressure in that I have a little bit more responsibility but with the current set of players at the club, we have a team of captains so my job doesn t really change that much. I have always have been a leader and a loud player. Armband? or no armband? I know that being given this honour is not to be taken lightly. It is a massive achievement that I have worked hard for. Hopefully I can motivate some of the younger players at the club as I have been in their position and this will inspire them to follow in my footsteps. My progression can prove to them that things are possible if you are prepared to work hard both on and off the football pitch. Hopefully it can give them the passion and drive them on to one day captain this great football club. On a final point to get this role though, I will say to them, they won t get it handed to them on a plate, as with everything in life nothing is given to you, they have to work hard for this honour day in and day out. Doing the right things, by portraying yourself in a professional manner and understanding that hard work is the key to success. Then I can guarantee through experience that this will enhance your opportunities for being a success in any chosen career. COLBY BISHOP Colby is a former Central College Nottingham student who only agreed to join Notts County on scholarship terms late into 2013 but he was soon included in the first team for training. An impressive nine goals in four youth team appearances caught the attention of Shaun Derry. As a result he has been named on the substitutes bench for the first team five times already, including twice this season. To recognise his Football talents and the club knowing he should have a bright future in the game if he continues to develop. The club moved swiftly to offer Colby his first professional contract. The 18 year old striker will now be able to look forward to making the step up to the first...

step up to the first team after putting pen-to-paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal. Colby will still be part of the youth Scholarship programme this year but this is excellent news for him and it is fully deserved. It reflects the hard work he puts into all his scholarship responsibilities including his education and obviously his football. Colby will join up with first team squad full-time ahead of the 2015/16 season. Colby thoughts are shared below: Signing my first professional contract was one of the best moments of my life so far. I felt on top of the world and very excited about the journey that was ahead of me. I was told I will be offered a professional contract by the gaffer in his office after training. At first when he called me in his office I thought it was going to be an insight on how he thought I trained but when the words I m going to offer you a pro contract came out of his mouth I was filled with joy. Leaving the manager s office all I wanted to do was tell my Dad as he is a long life Notts county fan and I knew he would be very proud of me. Being told about the contract was nothing compared to actually signing it. It meant so much to me knowing that the football club have acknowledge all the hard work that I have, not only put into my football, but all my other scholarship responsibilities. This was extremely satisfying for me! This is a massive step in the right direction where I want to progress with my foot balling career but I do know that it will bring a lot of new challenges which would require a lot of hard work. Having said that, the motivation which the contract has given me will only drive me on to become better. This has made me feel ready for any challenges ahead. I know signing a contract is an honour, a great thing and many people I know are pleased for me and congratulated me on this achievement. However my feet are firmly on the ground and I do know that there is no point in signing a contract unless you are going to do the right things and prove that I am worthy of this great opportunity. I am really going to give it everything I have and push to challenge and break through into the first team. In my playing position I can only continue to score goals for the youth team and impress in training as well as doing the right things around the football environment. Hopefully then I will get my chance and I will have a lot of success at the club through hard work, grit and determination.
