McKenzie County County & State Fair Exhibit Books The 2017 ND State Fair Exhibit book, informational letter and exhibit pre-registration forms will be sent to each 4-H family the end of the month. When you receive this mailing, please read the exhibit book carefully in regards to lot descriptions, schedules, deadlines, work assignments and special rules and guidelines there are important changes each year! Also, many of you have been selected to help on committees, so please look for your names! If you have any questions or cannot serve on a committee, please try to get a replacement and let us know. 4-H Serving McKenzie Electric Cooperative Annual Meeting Supper Our 4-H Program will be serving this supper for 350 to 400 people on Tuesday, June 20. Supper will start at 5 pm at the new building east and north of Watford City. We will need help preparing and serving the meal. This is an important fund raiser and promotional event for our program and we will need the help of many of our families. A committee will be making assignments for help within the coming weeks. Please let Marcia know if you would be willing to serve on the planning committee. 4-H Volunteer of the Month! Kalsey Kronberg This month, we are pleased to recognize Kalsey Kronberg of Keene Lucky Leaf as an outstanding volunteer who continues to go above and beyond in efforts to serve the 4 -H community! Kalsey attended the 4-H Volunteer and Leader Training last month and graciously offered to bring some supplies to assist our office with this program. She has also volunteered to plan and organize the REC Supper, which is a big event and fundraiser for 4-H in our county. She is a fantastic leader, and her passion for teaching youth about agriculture and service is strong and evident! Kalsey currently serves as the 4-H Council Treasurer and represents her club on the Council s Livestock Committee. Thank you Kalsey for all your dedication and willingness to serve 4-H and this community! 4-H Consumer Choice Judging: Workout Schedule & Contest All 4-H ers are encouraged to Consumer Choice judge. This longtime 4-H activity helps young people build life skills like decision making, problem solving, speaking, organizing information and consumer buymanship. This year the Beginners (ages 8-9) will judge Beverages, Frozen Treats and Jeans; the Juniors (ages 10-13) and Seniors (ages 14-18) will look at Insulated Jackets & Vests, Outdoor Backpacks and Smoothies. It is recommended that all judgers attend at least two workouts prior to the county contest. If you cannot attend workouts, but would still like to judge, please check with the extension office about checking out the workout classes to practice at home. Also, standard books are available at the office. Please stop by and pick one up to start learning about this year s topics! Junior and senior judgers who participate at the county level are invited to participate in the State Consumer Choice Contest for juniors and seniors on Tuesday, July 25 at the ND State Fair. (If you cannot be at the county contest and would still like to judge at the state contest, please contact the office as another time to judge the county contest classes could be arranged.) Schedule for judging workouts and contest: Mondays, May 8, 22 - afterschool Tuesday: May 17 - afterschool Tuesday: May 30-1:30 pm County Contest: Monday, June 5-1:30 pm All workouts and contest will be at the extension office. Horsin Around There are a few horse events coming up in May and June that will be perfect for our Horsin Around program! The first is the Les Vogt Horsemanship Clinic at the fairgrounds on May 31 st. He is a highly reputable horse trainer, and I would like to invite any interested youth to attend this event! Please meet at the office at 1:00 pm, and then we will ride together to the arena for a 2 hour field-trip. Please RSVP if you plan on attending; admission is free to 4-H members. The second event is the 4-H Horse Show on June 13 th at the fairgrounds! We will not formally meet in June due to the very busy 4-H schedule, but I encourage those of you who are not competing to still come and view this fun event!
May, 2017 Sign-up Your Children for Junior Master Gardener Program If you would like your children who are ages 10 to 12 to learn more about gardening, the Junior Master Gardener Program (JMG) is for them! This free course will be held in Watford City starting Thursday, May 18 at 5 pm to 6:30 pm CT and continuing weekly through the summer (the schedule will need to shift occasionally). This program is modeled after the highly successful Master Gardener Program and offers horticultural and environmental science education, and leadership and life skills development through fun and creative activities. The program is committed to helping young people become good gardeners and good citizens so that they can make a positive contribution to their community, school and family. Participants will meet at the 4-H exhibit building on the fairgrounds and will also work in their raised garden beds behind the Homemaker Building. Volunteer instructors are needed to teach lessons in the program and to help supervise the children. If you are interested in receiving more information, enrolling your child or serving as an adult volunteer in the JMG program, please give Marcia a call. Check out Create It: Science, Photography, Woodworking Camp This camp will be held June 11 to 15 and is appropriate for youth ages 8 and up in Washburn. Fee to attend is $275 for early bird and $300 for the regular fee (early bird fees are due by May 20). All 4-H ers can attend camp free, courtesy of McKenzie County 4-H Council. Are you a tinkerer or like to try new things? This camp was made for you! Make new friends in the 4-H Camp studio. Participate in a variety of science, photography and wood working workshops to generate your own creations. You will be able to explore outdoors and participate in many other fun camp activities. Marcia has helped plan this camp and will attend it in its entirety. Youth are welcome to ride to and from camp with her. Extension Youth Conference, June 19 22, NDSU, Fargo If you are in grades 7-12, are willing to share new ideas and with others, can provide leadership, and are willing to gain and grow from this experience then you need to attend Extension Youth Conference! You do not need to be enrolled in 4-H to attend! For more details and how to register, please contact the extension office. Babysitter s Training Course Offered The American Red Cross Babysitter Course will be held from 9 am to 4 pm CT pm on Friday, June 2 at the Yellowstone Meeting Room in the Courthouse. Youth ages 11 to 15, who are interested in babysitting children, are encourage to attend. Cost to attend is $40 per person, which includes the Babysitter s Training Handbook and food for breaks. This course offers hands-on training in the following topic areas: safety, basic child care, safe play, first aid and critical emergency action skills. Scholarships Available for High Schoolers Graduating in 2018 The North Dakota State Fair Foundation is pleased to announce that two scholarships will be awarded to high school students residing in North Dakota who will be graduating in 2018. Two $1000 scholarships will be given this year to students who demonstrate leadership, character, and citizenship and have exhibited in 4-H, FFA or open class during the annual fair event. The scholarship applications are available now to high school juniors. Talking 4-H Newsletter May, 2017 4-H Events Scheduled: Communication Arts Event & Project Expo - Tuesday, May 23 rd 4-H Clothing Revue - Thursday, June 22 nd The McKenzie County 4-H Communication Arts Event & Project is scheduled for 4 pm CT on Tuesday, May 23 rd at the McKenzie County Library. Setup can begin after school and the contests will start when everyone is ready. Preregistration is required by calling the office by Friday, May 19. For the Communication Arts contest, you will need to tell us the title of your presentation and the category you are entering. If you are entering the Project Expo we need the title of your display, the project you are enrolled in and the years you have been in the project. (See below for more explanation of these events!) The McKenzie County 4-H Clothing Revue contest is scheduled for Thursday, June 22 nd at 1 pm CT at the Extension Office. Pre-registration is required by calling the office by Monday, June 19. Please let us know what garments you have prepared and what category you are entering them in (again, see below for more information on this event). Event Descriptions: 4-H Communication Arts At the 4-H Communication Arts Event, members can prepare a demonstration, illustrated talk, prepared speech, interpretive reading (either humorous or serious), dramatic presentation, commercials, short takes, broadcasting, presentation software, video production, website design, 4-H promotion or cloverbud recitation. Some of these categories can be presented as teams and some must be done as individuals. Top winners at our event can advance to the district contest on Thursday, June 1 at 6 pm at the Williams County Extension Office in Williston where a 5:30 pm supper will be served. Teen winners at the district contest will have the option of winning a trip to 4-H Extension Youth Conference in Fargo in June. There will be a State 4-H Communication Arts Event this year on Sunday, July 23 at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot. Preteen and Teen winners of the District Communication Arts event are invited to participate. The top 30% of participants will receive Award of Excellence ribbons. Please contact this office for information on specific options this year. The 4-H Communication Arts Event (BA800) publication in this office will completely fill you in on this event. Evaluation sheets used by judges are also included. You will answer questions from a judge about the project and each participant will be awarded a ribbon. You can view a PowerPoint presentation about project expo displays on our office website. County entries can advance to the state competition on Monday, July 24 at the North Dakota State Fair. Project Expo is one of the easiest 4-H events and is also FUN. 4-H Showmanship Day Wednesday, June 21, 2017 12:45-6:00 pm CT, McKenzie County Fairgrounds, Watford City The county fair is coming up fast and Livestock Showmanship Day is a wonderful opportunity for 4-Hers, or others interested, to come and learn techniques to improve their showmanship, grooming/fitting skills, and their general knowledge on various animal species! This event will be hands-on, with live animals available to demonstrate the different procedures for you to take home in preparation for the fair! Species to be covered include beef, rabbit, poultry, horse, swine, goat, dog, cat, and sheep. In order to condense this event into an afternoon, participants will rotate and learn about only 5 desired species. Details on content is below in the schedule of events: Schedule of Events: (all times listed are Central Time) 12:45 Welcome and Introductions 1:00 Rotate in groups through Beef, Swine, Rabbit, or Goat Sessions (Participants will select only 3) 4:00 Snack Break 4:15 Horse or Cats/Dogs Session (Participants will select only 1) 5:00 Poultry or Sheep Session (Participants will select only 1) 5:45 Door Prizes and Clean-Up Due to the format, pre-registration will be required by June 16 th! Animals of each species will be ready and available for live demonstrations, but we ask 4-Hers to please leave their animals at home this year. Bringing in animals turns into an all-day event, so we hope that this format will maximize our time and still allow 4-Hers to gain plenty of great skills to be more successful in their interviews and with their 4-H animals. Snacks and beverages will be provided to all participating families. McKenzie County 4-H Horse Show Tuesday, June 13 9 am CT, Fairgrounds The 4-H Horse Show registration forms, guidelines and patterns were mailed out the 4-H ers enrolled in the Horse project along with a few to families that may be interested! If you didn t receive this mailing and are interested in attending, you can find the horse show forms on our website (address in on the front of this newsletter).
