Louisville Area YMCA Blue Nautics Parent Info Coaches: Head Coach: Alaina Hartley cell: 616-216-5079 email: ahartley@ymcastark.org Assistant Coaches: Cory Boogaart, Layne Kamph Aquatic Director: Jacob Riley YMCA: 330-875-1611 ext.206 email: jriley@ymcastark.org Coach Responsibilities: The coaches will provide a fun and safe environment for your swimmers! Along with teaching each swimmer fundamentals of swimming, we also hope to make this an exciting season. At the beginning of the season we will assess each swimmers abilities and place them in lanes accordingly. This allows each person to learn and grow with others of like capabilities. As your swimmer progresses he/she may be placed into a new, more challenging lane. We are responsible for workouts that teach the strokes and will improve your child in this sport, as well as help them with their overall physical health. Attendance at meets is up to you, the parent. Please talk to a coach if you are concerned about placing your child in a meet if you think they are not ready. It is the job of the coaching staff to answer all of your questions and concerns! It is the head coach s job to determine which events each swimmer will participate in at meets whether individual events or relays. Coaches will provide feedback to swimmers at meets after their events. Team Fees & Paperwork: Cost: $235 Activity Fee: $30 Fees are due by Monday October 16 th Paperwork is due by the beginning of the second week, on Monday October 9 th * No one will be turned away because of an inability to pay. Swim Practices: Swimmers please be ready to get into the water PRIOR to the scheduled practice start time. Parents, please drop off and pick up swimmers on time. If a swimmer needs to leave practice early a hand written note, or an email at least 1 hour prior to practice with a specific leave time is required or your child may not leave practice early. Team caps are mandatory for all swim meets and will be given out at the first swim meet. Team suits are required for swim meets to show team unity. Other required equipment: Practice suit Goggles (no face masks!!) Water bottle Dryland Practices: Dryland- a workout out of water usually in the gym or multipurpose room Please dress accordingly: Running shoes, t shirt or tank top, shorts or sweat pants Do NOT wear flip flops or jeans etc. We will be both inside and outside and need to be comfortable and safe Please bring water! Swim Meets: Parent s Responsibilities: Get swimmer to meet ON TIME (early) Participate! Volunteer to time or help out during or before meets. Parent participation is what helps run meets smoothly and we greatly appreciate your time. Cheer and Encourage! Let your swimmer know that you re proud of them. Leave it up to the coaches to be honest and tell them what they can improve. Please encourage your child as best as you can. I m sure they will all do wonderfully and deserve your praise. Provide your child with water or a sports drink and a snack. Swimming is tiring and swimmers must stay hydrated and energized. Please leave the coaching up to the coaches at all times 2
What to Bring: Swim Suit, Goggles, Swim Cap Towels (There s an s because they will need multiple) Water and/or sports drink Healthy Snacks Team caps are mandatory for all swim meets and will be given out at the first swim meet. Team suits are required for swim meets to show team unity. *We will be sizing the kids within the first 2 weeks of practice and then parents will order the suit online with a special code from Aquatic Outfitters, or by going to the store in North Canton. Parents: Dress appropriately for the pool. It is very warm and humid. You will be there for a while so I suggest short sleeves. Feel free to bring something to sit on at meets; bleachers can get uncomfortable so perhaps a towel or blanket will help. *Parents are prohibited from coaching their swimmers at meets or during practices. This is the job of the coaches. Yelling or abusive language towards coaches, officials, swimmers, or other parents is also not allowed. If you need to speak to a coach feel free to confront us AFTER practices or meets (not during), or use Alaina s email or cell number. Swim meets are an exciting time for the swimmers. It is an opportunity to see how much they ve grown through the swim season from the first meet to the championships. It is also a time to show off to friends and family, so please support them! These kids put in so much hard work and deserve to be rewarded. At a meet we look to better the kids. We push them to get best times, which will be rewarded with best time ribbons. A win is always great, but not the only thing we strive for. Hard work can be shown by dropping only tenths of a second in a race sometimes. Every second counts, always be proud of your swimmer! 3
Volunteers! We need volunteers to keep this team running smoothly. We need you, the parent, to help us out as much as you can. I understand you can t do everything but there are plenty of opportunities to show your team support. Volunteer positions and sign-up sheets can be found almost constantly throughout the season on the team bulletin board in the front of the Y. Volunteer positions range from: Meet Officials, Meet Timers, donating food or drinks, helping at the scoring table etc. Please sign up to help out the team, and the coaches! We would also love pictures! We have a team Facebook page and it would be great to get some new faces up to show everyone what we re doing here at LYBN. Timers: Timers will stand behind the blocks during meets and time the swimmers in their lanes. You will be given a stopwatch and a partner to help you. Runner: This person will collect the swim cards from the timers after the swimmers finish their race. Set-Up Crew: A group of people who can help to set up at the meet. We need tables set up, touch pads put in the water, mats set up and signs posted for the away team. Tear-Down Crew: Helps clean up after the meet. Putting tables away, taking touch pads out of the water, rolling up mats etc. Heat Sheet Seller: Sits outside the pool door selling heat sheets before the meet. Officials: This job requires training offered in the fall. Please let me know if you are already certified! These people will make sure the swimmers all follow the rules when they swim. *Don t worry if you have never volunteered before. We will help guide you and instruct you every step of the way. Ask questions, they are encouraged! Every little thing you as parents do to help is much appreciated. *IMPORTANT: It is mandatory that you volunteer this season. In order for your swimmer to participate in the championship meets at the end of the season YOU must volunteer at least 2 meets or team events (dinners, parties, concessions, meets etc.). If you are unable to volunteer this season make sure you have a substitute such as a grandparent or family friend signed up in your place. 4
Communication: Ways to stay informed: 1) Email/Call/Text Coach 2) Facebook Page: Blue Nautics Swim Team 3) Remind Texts 4) LYBN Bulletin Board 5) Swimmer/Coach Mailboxes All swimmers have a file folder mailbox with their names on them. Please check regularly for flyers, quotes, ribbons, etc. We will also have a coaches mailbox this year. This is a way for kids to give me (Coach Hartley) feedback, quote ideas, tshirt ideas, or anything else they want. They want to share a joke at practice? Put it in the mailbox and I will write it on the board. Have a song request for practice? Put it in the mailbox. You have a dryland or swim set idea? Kids have a problem but want it to be anonymous? Mailbox. Anything your kids want to tell me they can put in my mailbox for me to look at so we don t take too much practice time talking. I will leave notecards and a pen with the mailboxes for kids to write to me!
