Sun Devil History

Sun Devil History The Program The 2009-10 season marks the 33rd year of Arizona State University sponsoring women s basketball as an intercollegiate sport. ASU also begins its 23rd campaign as one of the charter members of the prestigious. Mary Littlewood coached ASU s first squad in 1975, and was inducted into the Hall of Distinction in 1990. Littlewood began her association with the university in 1965 and coached volleyball from 1965-74. After her one-year stint as ASU s women s basketball coach, Littlewood began her 20-year reign as the Sun Devil softball coach. She retired in 1989. After posting five non-winning campaigns during its first five seasons as a sponsored intercollegiate sport, the ASU program began to turn the corner in 1980-81. Under head coach Juliene Simpson, the Sun Devils would post an 86-37 record (.705) over the next four seasons. The successful stretch included three consecutive post-season tournaments the 1981 Women s National Invitation Tournament, and the 1982 and 1983 NCAA Tournaments. In 1983, the Sun Devils finished 12th in the final national rankings. Led by head coach Maura McHugh the Sun Devils made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1991-92 after posting the program's fourth 20-win season (20-9). An event that would eventually prove to be the most significant in program history occurred in June, 1996, when Northern Arizona University head coach Charli Turner Thorne was named the head coach at ASU. From day one on the job, Turner Thorne and her staff were determined to take ASU a program that had one NCAA appearance to its credit in the 13 seasons prior to her arrival into the stratosphere of women s college basketball. During each of Turner Thorne s first four seasons the Sun Devils saw an improvement in their win total from the prior season. Before long, gradual improvement would give way to head-turning accomplishments. In 2000-01, Turner Thorne s fifth season, the Sun Devils finished tied for first in the Pac-10 and earned their first NCAA Tournament berth in nine seasons. One season later the Sun Devils won the inaugural Pac-10 Conference Tournament and won their first NCAA Tournament game in 19 years. In 2004-05 the Sun Devils found themselves in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 22 seasons. In 2007 the Sun Devils set single-season school records for most wins (31), most Pac-10 wins (16) and most road wins (10) and came within one victory of earning a trip to the Final Four for the first time in school history. Last season Turner Thorne had the Sun Devils on the doorstep of the Final Four for the second time in three seasons as ASU once again qualified for the Elite Eight before falling to unbeaten and eventual national champion Connecticut. While Arizona State did not sponsor women s basketball as an intercollegiate sport until 1975-76, ASU (then Tempe Normal School) has fielded women s basketball teams dating back to the 1890s. Pictured is the 1914 team which posted a 3-1 record under the tutelage of ASU football coach Fred Irish. ASU s first two-time All-Pac-10 selection in nine years, Amanda Levens helped lead the Sun Devils to the championship in the inaugural Pac-10 Conference Tournament in 2002. The Players The first student-athlete to make headlines on the Sun Devil hardwood was Joanie Smith, who played from 1976-78. Smith averaged 23.5 points and became the first ASU female athlete to sign a professional contract when she was drafted to play for the Milwaukee Does in 1978. One of the most celebrated players to help bring national attention to the Sun Devil program is two-time consensus All-American and four-time All-Conference pick Kym Hampton (1981-84), a former member of the WNBA s New York Liberty. In her final game as a Sun Devil, Hampton exploded for a school-record 44 points against Arizona. She was inducted into ASU's Hall of Fame in 1989, remains the only basketball player in ASU history (male or female) to score more than 2,000 points (2,361) and grab more than 1,000 rebounds (1,145) in a career. In 1983 Olivia Jones was named to the Kodak All-District women s basketball team and was an all-conference selection. In 1982-83, she was ASU s leading scorer with 19 points per game. The squad, which included Hampton and Jones, also possessed 1980 and 1982 all-selection member Cassandra Lander. Known to be a quick playmaker, Lander s career highs were 35 points and 12 rebounds. A 2006 entry into the ASU Hall of Fame, Cassandra Lander (1979-83) concluded her Sun Devil career as the No. 2 scorer in school history with 1,670 points. Forward Sherry Poole proved successful on and off the hardwood. The Sun Devils No. 4 all-time leading scorer (1,370) and sixth-leading rebounder (585), Poole shot.803 from the free throw line during her career. Poole was also named the Pac-10 Medalist in 1987 the highest award the league can bestow on a student-athlete. She also earned third-team GTE Academic All-America honors in 1987. Jodi Rathbun left her mark on ASU as a point guard when she graduated in 1986. Rathbun set (then) record marks for most assists in a game (14) and season (143) during the 1983-84 campaign. A 2001 ASU Hall of Fame inductee, Rathbun was also impressive on the softball field with a career batting average of.361. She played first base on the 1987 team, which finished No. 7 in the nation. The seventh leading scorer in Sun Devil history, Robin Connolly was the first player in ASU women s basketball history to record a triple-double. Playing a big role in helping the Sun Devils get back to the NCAA Tournament in 1992 was honorable mention all-american Ryneldi Becenti. In just two seasons at ASU (1992-93), the two-time All-Pac-10 selection 114 www.thesundevils.com

The sharp-shooting point guard was named Pac-10 Player of the Week a school-record four times and played for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA during its inaugural season. In 2005, Becenti became the sixth women s basketball player inducted into ASU s Hall of Fame. An import from Soldotna, Alaska, All-Pac-10 forward Molly Tuter averaged 13.9 points over four seasons and ranks third all time in scoring (1,374 points) and fourth in three-point field goals (116). She also blocked 59 shots, the seventh-highest mark in ASU history. In 2001 Amanda Levens and Melody Johnson were named first-team All-Pac-10 selections, marking the first time in school history that ASU had two first-teamers. In addition, Betsy Boardman earned Pac-10 All- Freshman honors and Turner Thorne was recognized as Pac-10 Coach of the Year and WBCA Regional Coach of the Year for District VIII. In 2002 Levens was named an honorable-mention Associated Press All-American, and became the first Sun Devil in nine years to earn back-to-back firstteam Pac-10 honors. She also became the 13th player to join ASU s 1,000-point club and just the third Sun Devil in school history to do it in two seasons, scoring 1,020 points in two years. In 2002, Kylan Loney set the school record for assists by a freshman and also earned honorable-mention Pac-10 All-Freshman honors. Jen Albert and Leah Combs were named to the Pac-10 s all-academic first team, the first time that ASU had two players earn first-team academic honors in the same season. In 2002-03, Amy Denson and Jill Noe were named to the Pac-10 All- Freshman first team, while Kristen Kovesdy was an honorable-mention allrookie selection, marking the first time in school history that ASU has had more than one player on the league s all-freshman squad. Carrie Buckner earned honorable-mention All-Pac-10 honors. In 2003-04, Loney earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors while Kovesdy was an honorable-mention selection. In 2005, Loney, who concluded her Sun Devil career No. 1 in school history in three-point field goals and No. 2 in assists, became the second Sun Devil women s basketball player to win the prestigious Pac-10 Medal of Honor and also won ASU s Heather Farr Award for her achievements in scholarship, athletics, community service and leadership. A member of two NCAA Tournament teams, Kristen Kovesdy ended her Sun Devil career as the school s all-time leader in FG percentage (.575), No. 4 in field goals (542), No. 4 in rebounds (659), No. 5 in scoring Sun Devil History (1,363 points), No. 7 in free throws (273), and No. 9 in blocks (49). In 2007 the Sun Devils bid farewell to Emily Westerberg and Aubree Johnson. The best of friends since childhood, Johnson and Westerberg helped guide ASU to its highest single-season win total (31) in school history and three NCAA appearances, including its first ever berth in the Elite Eight. The first ASU player ever to earn All-Pac-10 honors three times, Westerberg concluded her Sun Devil career among the school s all-time leaders in several statistical categories including free throws 352 (3rd), free throw percentage (.803, 4th), points (1,340, 6th), field goals (468, 7th) and rebounds (582, 9th). Johnson would save her best for last, earning All- Pac-10 honors for the first time in her career. She concluded her Sun Devil career sixth on the school s all-time list in rebounds (608) and fourth in blocked shots (69). The 2007-08 campaign would be the last for seniors Jill Noe and Reagan Pariseau, who were both instrumental in helping the Sun Devils build their current standard of annual Robin Connolly, who holds a number of spots among the top five on several Sun Devil career lists, was the first player to record a triple-double in ASU women s basketball history. success. In addition to her talent on the court, Noe will be remembered for the one-of-a-kind heart she showed in rebounding from a pair of season ending injuries to finish her career as the only Sun Devil to rank among the school's top 10 in points (ninth), rebounds (10th) and assists (sixth). Known for her one-of-a-kind competitiveness and tenacity on the defensive end, Pariseau finished her career as the first Sun Devil to play on four NCAA Tournament teams. Arguably the best all-around player in Sun Devil history, Briann January left an indelible mark on the Sun Devil program as she helped lead ASU to the NCAA Tournament four times, including the program's only two Elite Eight appearances. Arizona State's all-time leader in assists (538) and free throw percentage (.830), January was also among ASU's all-time leaders in steals (second, 265), free throws (second, 401), 3-point field goal percentage (fourth,.399), 3-point field goals (fifth, 132) and scoring (seventh, 1,317 points). A two-time Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, January would go on to be drafted by the Indiana Fever with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft. Year Coach Overall Conf. Georgia ended ASU s 1980-81 season, and the Sun Devils were not about to let history repeat itself, thrashing the Bulldogs 97-77 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region at Wells Fargo Arena. The contest marked ASU s first appearance in NCAA Tournament play. Kym Hampton had 31 points as the Sun Devils built a 14-point advantage and never looked back. Forward Olivia Jones added 19 for ASU. The Sun Devils were not as fortunate six days later in Ruston, La., as top-seeded Louisiana Tech blitzed ASU 92-54 in the Midwest Region semifinals. The Lady Techsters led 50-18 at the half. Jones (21 points) was the lone Sun Devil to post double figures. Tech went on to win the national title a week later in Norfolk, Va. 1983 - NCAA Tournament - Tempe, Ariz./Los Angeles No. 11 ASU remained undefeated at home in NCAA play, defeating Utah 78-64 in West Region first-round action at Wells Fargo Arena. Olivia Jones scored 28 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and hit all 10 of her free throws. Kym Hampton also posted a double-double, netting 11 points and 11 boards. But the Sun Devils were once again overmatched in the Sweet 16, falling to USC 96-59 at Pauley Pavilion. Hampton scored 15, but USC scored 58 second-half points and cruised to the win. USC won the NCAA title the following week, marking the second straight year ASU had lost to the eventual national champion in the round of 16. 1992 NCAA Tournament, Chicago, Ill. ASU advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine seasons but lost a 67-65 heartbreaker to host DePaul at a Midwest Region first-round contest in front of 1,936 in Chicago. The sixth-seeded Sun Devils, who trailed 30-29 at the half, built a seven-point lead with 12:18 remaining. But the Blue Demons rallied, taking a 60-59 lead with 3:31 left. With the Blue Demons up four and 26 seconds remaining, All-American Ryneldi Becenti hit two free throws to cut DePaul s lead to 67-65. Becenti fouled Rita Hale, who missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but DePaul held on for the upset win. Lisa Salsman led the Sun Devils with 16 points. 2001 - NCAA Tournament - West Lafayette, Ind. The 11th-seeded Sun Devils saw their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1992 cut short in an 83-66 loss to sixth-seeded Louisiana State March 16 in the first round of the NCAA Mideast Regional. In the only firstround NCAA Tournament game featuring a pair of teams ranked in the Top 25 polls, the 18th-ranked Lady Tigers trailed early against the No. 25 Sun Devils before going on a 17-8 run that gave them a lead they would not relinquish. ASU went on a 6-0 run to get the score to 50-42 with 15:28 to play, but LSU pushed the lead back to double digits and led by as many as 20 in the second half. Melody Johnson led the game with a career-best 25 points for Arizona State, going 8-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-13 from the line. Amanda Levens added 11 points and a game-high six assists, while Betsy Boardman added 10 points and three steals. 2002 - NCAA Tournament - Nashville, Tenn. The ninth-seeded Sun Devils earned their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning the inaugural Pac-10 Tournament to capture the Pac-10 s automatic bid. In the first round of the Midwest Sub-Regional at Vanderbilt s Memorial Gym, the Sun Devils earned their first postseason victory in 19 years and tied the school record for victories in a season with a 73-70 win over Wisconsin on March 16. ASU trailed for almost all of the game and fell behind by as many as 14 points in the first half. The Sun Devils, however, scored 48 points and shot 65.5 percent in the second half to rally for the victory, their fourth straight come-from-behind win. Cian Carvalho had 13 of her career-best 24 points in the second half, while Melody Johnson and Amanda Levens added 18 and 14 points, respectively. In the second round, ASU fell short against top-seeded and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt 61-35 on March 18. The Sun Devils turned in season lows in scoring, shooting and rebounding in the loss to host Vanderbilt which advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. The Sun Devils came out cold in the game, missing four of their first five shots and shooting just 25 percent in the first half. Vanderbilt held a 32-15 lead at halftime and never looked back en route to the victory. Johnson turned in a team-high 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss. 2005 - NCAA Tournament - Fresno, Calif./Tempe, Ariz. Head coach Charli Turner Thorne became the first coach in school history to lead her team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, guiding the Sun Devils to their first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in 22 years. The fifth-seeded Sun Devils earned an at-large NCAA bid and traveled to the SaveMart Center in Fresno, Calif., for the first and second rounds. ASU took on Ohio Valley Conference champion Eastern Kentucky in the first game and emerged with an 87-65 victory. The Sun Devils made 10 of their first 16 shots in the game and led 48-31 at the half. Emily Westerberg had 14 of her team-high 20 points in the first half, while Kristen Kovesdy scored 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting in the win. In the second round, ASU used aggressive defense, hustle and timely shooting to earn a 70-61 upset over 11th-ranked Notre Dame and a trip home for the NCAA Tempe Regional. The win gave the Sun Devils the third NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in school history and their first since the tournament was expanded to 64 teams. After falling behind by 13 points in the first half, Betsy Boardman started the comeback when she knocked down a long, buzzer-beating three-pointer at halftime to get the team within five. ASU opened the second half with a 12-2 run and answered each Notre Dame run to hang on for the victory. Kylan Loney, who was playing with broken nose, scored eight points in the final 1:29 of the game and finished with 20 points, while Aubree Johnson added 12 points and nine rebounds. The scrappy Sun Devils returned to Wells Fargo Arena for the NCAA Tempe Regional, and despite the support of a rowdy crowd of 8,213, fell just short against top-seeded and fourth-ranked North Carolina 79-72. ASU led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but UNC regained the lead and took a 46-42 advantage at the half. In the second half, ASU tied the game twice and kept things close until the heavily favored Tar Heels pulled away late to end the Sun Devils tournament run. Loney, who was named to the NCAA Tempe Regional All-Tournament team, again led the team with 18 points, including three three-pointers. Kovesdy had 12 points, and Johnson led the squad with 10 rebounds. 2006 NCAA Tournament - Tucson, Ariz. For the seventh straight season, head coach Charli Turner Thorne led ASU to a postseason appearance. The 15th ranked Sun Devils earned an at-large bid into the 2006 NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the Albuquerque Regional, the fourth-seeded Sun Devils squared off against Stephen F. Austin at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. ASU proved to be too big and too deep as they defeated the Ladyjacks 80-61. Eleven players scored for the Sun Devils, all in the first half. Senior Kristen Kovesdy scored 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting and collected 11 rebounds. Back-up center, freshman Kirsten Thompson, added 12 points for the Devils and Amy 128 www.thesundevils.com

NCAA Tournament Summaries Denson finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior Aubree Johnson was the only other Arizona State player in double figures with 10. The Sun Devils led by as many as 28 in the second half and finished with a 52-26 rebounding advantage over the Ladyjacks. The Sun Devils met the fifthseeded Utah Utes in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Devils fell to the Utes 86-65. The Devils lead in the first half 34-19, but the Utes erased the fifteen-point deficit, scoring the rest of the first-half points, to tie the game at 34-34. The game remained close for much of the second half until Utah went on an 18-5 run to lead 70-57 with 4:18 left in the game. The Devils would not be able to overcome the deficit. Denson scored 14, Emily Westerberg had 12, and Kovesdy, in the final game of her career, finished with 11 points as the Sun Devils ended their season with a 25-7 record. 2007 NCAA Tournament - Los Angeles/Greensboro, N.C. The Arizona State women s basketball team, riding the success of the best season in school history, earned a third consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and a spot in the Elite Eight. The eighth-ranked Sun Devils received a No. 3 seed in the Greensboro Region, their highest-ever placement in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, ASU was able to overcome a lackluster shooting effort with tough defense to defeat a pesky UC Riverside team. The Sun Devils secured the win by outscoring the Highlanders 19-2 with just under eight minutes to go in the second half. Junior guard Briann January scored 15 points and sophomore guard Danielle Orsillo added 13 points and four assists to help ASU rally to win 57-50. In the second round the Sun Devils once again showed their tenacity in overcoming another slow start against Louisville. Down by 12 with eight minutes remaining, the Sun Devils used a 25-4 run to clinch their second Sweet Sixteen appearance in three years with a 67-58 win. January again lead the Sun Devils in scoring, matching her career high with 22 points. In their two first round games, the Sun Devils outscored the Highlanders and the Cardinals a combined 44-6 in the final eight minutes to turn near season-ending losses into season-saving wins. The third round provided little challenge for ASU, as the Sun Devils, who were playing more than 2,000 miles away from home in Greensboro, N.C., defeated the upstart Bowling Green Falcons 67-49. With the win, the Sun Devils punched their ticket for their first ever Elite Eight appearance. Orsillo, who replaced January as a starter due to a concussion she suffered in the final moments against Louisville, scored 16 points on 7-12 shooting to go along with three rebounds and two assists all while playing a career-high 34 minutes. The Sun Devils, who shot 61 percent in the first half to take a 16-point halftime lead, also racked up 16 points off turnovers. Bowling Green made the first basket of the game but would not lead again. ASU answered Bowling Green s points with a 14-2 run, capped off by consecutive 3-pointers from Orsillo. In the Elite Eight, ASU took on a determined Rutgers team who used tough defense to muddle the Sun Devils offensive efforts. The Scarlet Knights held Arizona State to one field goal in the first eight and a half minutes of the second half. For the game, ASU shot 32.7 percent from the field. Sophomore Kirsten Thompson s jumper pulled Arizona State within nine in the second half, but the basket was answered by seven straight Rutgers points which put the game out of reach. The Sun Devils ended the season one game shy of the Final Four, losing to the Scarlet Knights 64-45. January scored 12 points for ASU, helping the Sun Devils advance farther than any other team in school history. At the end of the season, Arizona State also accumulated the most wins in school history with 31. 2008 NCAA Tournament - College Park, Md. For the first time in school history the Sun Devils were headed to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth consecutive season. After an injury-plagued preseason combined with one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country led to a 6-5 start, the Sun Devils responded with a trio of five-game winning streaks over the next two months to secure their fourth consecutive 20-win season. As a result the Sun Devils were rewarded with their fourth straight NCAA Tournament berth, earning a No. 6 seed in the Oklahoma City Regional. For the first two rounds the Sun Devils were assigned to the College Park, Md. subregional. Their first tournament assignment came in the form of the Temple Owls. After playing Temple on even terms for the first 20 minutes (26-26), the Sun Devils opened the second half with a 13-0 run to take command of the game on their way to a 61-54 win. Lauren Lacey led ASU with 14 points while Jill Noe had 12 and Briann January had 10. In the second round game the Sun Devils met third-seeded Duke. An 18-5 Duke run in the second half put the Blue Devils up 47-34 with 11:19 remaining. No sooner was it that the Sun Devils countered with a 12-4 run of their own to close to 56-53 and eventually 59-57. However ASU could pull no closer as the Blue Devils advanced with a 63-57 win. Three Sun Devils scored in double figures led by January, who had 17 points. Lacey added 13 and Dymond Simon had 11. 2009 NCAA Tournament - Duluth, Ga/Trenton, N.J. Sparked by a school record 15-game winning streak, the Sun Devils entered the final game of the regular season at Stanford with a chance to play for a share of the regular season Pac-10 title. Unfortunately for the Sun Devils fate would deal them a hard blow when leading scorer Dymond Simon was injured in the game and lost for the remainder of the season. After opening the Pac-10 Tournament with a quarterfinal loss against USC, the Sun Devils were given a No. 6 seed in the Trenton Regional. They began the 2009 NCAA Tournament in Duluth, Ga., where they faced the University of Georgia, which was not playing far from home. Four Sun Devils scored in double figures led by senior F Lauren Lacey (5-7 FGs), junior F Kayli Murphy (6-6 FGs) and sophomore F Becca Tobin (5-7 FGs), who scored 12 points each while combining to make 80 percent of their shots (16-20) as the Sun Devils defeated Georgia 58-47. ASU's defensive performance was so dominant that it held Georgia to its lowest point total in NCAA play and for the first time in 74 NCAA Tournament games the Lady Bulldogs did not have a player score in double figures. In the second round against Florida State, the Sun Devils overcame a nine-point deficit (40-31) in the game's final 10 minutes to beat the third-seeded Seminoles 63-58. Senior guard Kate Engelbrecht's 3-pointer ignited a 32-18 ASU scoring run over the last 9:27 of the game. The Sun Devils made 62.5 percent of their field goal attempts over the game's last 10 minutes, including 83 percent (5-6) of their 3-pointers. Providing the Sun Devils with a tremendous boost off the bench was junior Gabby Fage, whose back-to-back 3-pointers over a 31-second span cut Florida State's lead to a single point, 46-45, with 6:12 left in the game. Fage tied her career high with six points and set a new career high with six rebounds. And then there was junior guard Danielle Orsillo, who calmly drilled a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to break a 54-54 tie and put the Sun Devils on top to stay. It was Orsillo's only make of the six shots she attempted in the second half, but it turned out to be one of the biggest triples of her career. In the regional semfinal finals against second-seeded Texas A&M, ASU came through with one of its best offensive performances in recent memory as it shot a season-high 62 percent. Briann January led the Sun Devils with 22 points (8-10 FGs, 6-6 FTs) to go along with five assists, two steals and one block. Junior guard Danielle Orsillo scored 15 points (3-6 FGs, 7-7 FTs) and senior forward Lauren Lacey added 14 (7-8 FGs) for ASU, which outscored Texas A&M 10-0 over the final three minutes to secure the win. For the second time in three years the Sun Devils would come up short of making the Final Four, falling to unbeaten and eventual national champion UConn 83-64. The Sun Devils would give the Huskies their toughest game of the entire tournament as they were within eight points with just under 11 minutes remaining. Orsillo, who was named to the Trenton Regional All-Tournament Team, led ASU with 18 points while January had 12 in her final game as a Sun Devil. 2009-10 media Guide 129
