Introduction The co-curricular swimming program conducted by Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is aimed at both Primary and Secondary students and is designed to meet the needs of the individual. Students are encouraged to see the program as a way to improve their swimming skills and at the same time increase their fitness level. Under the guidance of experienced coaches and teachers, the students are able to train all year during School Terms. Two sessions a week are offered to Primary students at two levels development and advanced. The Secondary sessions are conducted on three mornings a week. All training is conducted at the South West Sports Centre s Aquatic Facilities. Opportunities are also taken throughout the year to test the students improvement and development. They are encouraged to participate in public swimming events such as the WA Swimming Splash and Dash Meets for novice swimmers (Primary and lower Secondary students), the Busselton Jetty Swim and the iconic open water swim The Rottnest Island Channel Swim (restricted to Secondary students). During the year students are offered the opportunity to attend special clinics, camps and trips to engage in sessions conducted by elite level coaches and other experts in the sport. Training All training sessions are conducted at the South West Sports Centre Pool, Hay Park Bunbury. Students who show progress may be asked to move up to a higher level squad. However, the final decision will be in consultation with the swimmer and their family.

Squads Open (Coach: Bob Marshall) Our Open Squad is designed for students aged 10 to 17 years who have shown commitment and talent required of an elite junior swimmer. Students who apply to participate in the annual Rottnest Channel Swim as a member of a school team would be expected to train with this squad. Senior (Coach: Kate Holdman) Our Senior Squad is designed for athletes aged 10 to 17 years who have shown commitment and talent required of an elite junior swimmer. See below for the Selection Criteria and Requirements for Open and Senior Squads. Selection Criteria Age: Generally 10 to 17 years old Commitment: Commitment underpins all Grammar Swim Squads Performance Groups, and as such it is expected that all members of the Open squad commit to a minimum of two sessions per week. Candidates should have previously shown a work ethic that is reflective of the squad s ambitions and goals. Current Ability: Students may be invited to join the squad, provided they are willing to commit, as detailed above, and have shown the ability to progress. Potential Improvement/Talent Identification: The final criteria is subjective, and allows the coach to identify students who he/she believes will benefit from working in the squad. The criteria will include, but are not limited to; training history, training ability, skill levels, rate of improvement, motivation and commitment. Requirements Equipment: Water Bottle, Snorkel, Grammar Swim Squad Cap and Goggles. Swimming aids provided by the School. Health and Injury Management: Students are expected to communicate with the squad coach if they have injuries and physio screenings may be recommended. Cost: $110 per semester

Squads Intermediate (Coach: Keith Kavanagh/Kim Shepherd) Our Intermediate Squad is designed for athletes aged 10 to 14 years who have the desire to train for school swimming, surf training, triathlons and general fitness. The squad is also a means to prepare for advancement to the Senior & Open Squads. Selection Criteria Age: Generally 10 to 14 years old Commitment: Commitment underpins all Grammar Swim Squads Performance Groups, and as such it is expected that all members of the Open squad commit to a minimum of two sessions per week. Candidates should have previously shown a work ethic that is reflective of the squad s ambitions and goals. Current Ability: Students in this squad must have the ability to train for 60 minutes with sound technique in all four strokes. Requirements Equipment: Water Bottle, Snorkel, Grammar Swim Squad Cap and Goggles. Swimming aids provided by the School. Health and Injury Management: Students are expected to communicate any injuries with their coach. Cost: $90 per semester Development (Coach: Tahlia Jensen/Kelby Murray) Our Development Squad is designed for athletes aged 8 to 13 years who have a passion for swimming and are interested in progressing to competitive swimming. Selection Criteria Age: Generally 8 to 13 years old Commitment: Commitment and training frequency is vital to the improvement of all junior swimmers and the coaching staff would like to see junior swimmers training two times per week. Current Ability: Students in this squad must have the ability swim freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. Requirements Equipment: Water Bottle, Grammar Swim Squad Cap and Goggles. Swimming aids provided by the School. Health and Injury Management: Students are expected to communicate any injuries with their coach. Cost: $90 per semester

Carnivals and Competitions Both Primary and Secondary conduct annual Inter House Swimming Carnivals and students are also given the opportunity to represent their School in competitions against other colleges and schools. Special Swims Opportunities are also taken throughout the year to test improvement and development. Students are encouraged to participate in Time Trials held by the squads, public swimming events such as the WA Swimming Dash and Splash Meets for novice swimmers (Primary students), the Busselton Jetty Swim (Primary and Secondary students) and the iconic Rottnest Island Channel Swim (restricted to Secondary students). Rottnest Channel Swim Since 1999, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School has regularly had competitors in both the duo and teams of four sections of the prestigious Rottnest Island Channel Swim. Solo competitor, Nicholas Bowen (1999), was the first entry of a student from the School in the event. Since then, more than 130 students have added their names to the list of swimmers that have completed the 19.7 km swim from Cottesloe Beach to Thompsons Bay at Rottnest Island, either as a solo, a member of a Duo or a member of a team of four. Dozens of community members have provided their vessels and expertise to escort the teams to Rottnest every year. Without their invaluable support, it would be not possible for students from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School to experience one of the major endurance swimming events of the southern hemisphere. Camps and Clinics Students are invited to attend the Clinics which are held early each term. Using facilities at both the School and the South West Aquatic Centre, students are put through their paces by leading elite development coaches from around WA. The students are involved in a range of activities dealing with goal setting, teamwork and, most importantly, swimming techniques. See Downloads below for upcoming events. Swim Camps and Trips Wherever possible, students are offered the opportunity to attend a camp that involves travel to destinations across WA, interstate and internationally. Previous camps and trips have included Melbourne for the World Swimming Championships, Singapore for a swim against an International College and Albany for a swim against Great Southern Grammar. Uniform Students are required to wear School bathers and School cap when competing for the School. These are available from the Sports Co-ordinator s Office on the Secondary campus. All students selected to swim for the School are provided with a School cap. Replacements are available at the Sports Office.

(and by appointment) Interhouse Carnival Winners For more than four decades, honour and effort have played a strong part in determining the champion House for each carnival. Often the difference between first and fourth is just a matter of points and it is only after the final relays that a winner can be declared.
